Ever since the pink Necrons came into the house my son has been dying to play 'a real game of space marines', and, since we're both laid up with the plague that is going around, what better way to kill a morning? Plus, I've been out of the game for a long time so this will be a refresher to some of the new rules for me.

So, when I tell him to go clean off his play table so we can put some terrain on it, his face lights up and off he goes chattering to himself and making laser noises while he bustles everything off the table. I pull out the old 3rd edition 40k box because I have some terrain in there I figure will help, but first I have to assemble it. It is those silly old trees, and some barrels, and a couple of ruins. I commission Tal to build some ruins out of Lego, while I work on the GW terrain. The barrels and ruins go together quickly and easily, but the trees refuse to bind in places.

Tal hums and builds lego ruins, while Papa says f*ckword after f*ckword. Eventually, I get the everything done, and we set up the table.

I want the game to be simple, for both our sakes, so the game is very basic: 1 hq, 2 troops. We don't count points.

Tal's Pink Necrons:

HQ: Lord /w Res Orb & Staff of Light

Troops: 11 Wars, 10 wars

Papa's Sisters of Battle:

HQ: Canoness /w Book and Evis
Troops: 9 regular bolter sisters, vss w/plasma pistol & CCW (x2)

We get Pitched Battle / Annihilation. I deploy centrally w/ my canoness in cover and both BSS on either side behind ruins. Tal takes a refused flank formation.

Turn 1 Papa: I move my canoness and 1 squad of sisters closer to the Necrons. Bolter fire from the nearer sisters does nothing.

Turn 1 Tal: Tal moves one squad of warriors up into a firing position in the Lego ruins. His other unit of warriors with the lord falls back to the table edge. Gauss fire sees two sisters sent to the Emperor:

Turn 2 Papa: All forces move up. All sisters in range fire and 2 warriors are killed.

Turn 2 Tal: Tal fails both WBB rolls. Warriors on table edge advance back into firing range. All warriors fire. Somehow, only 1 sister is killed:

Turn 3 Papa: Canoness advances into assault range. Sisters advance and both squads rapid fire the lead warrior unit. Several more Warriors are killed. Plasma pistol fire whiffs or is saved. Canoness passes difficult terrain, shrugs off attacks of remaining warriors, and eviscerates all but one. They'll be back, due to the close proximity of a Res Orb.

Turn 3 Tal: Several Necrons pass WBB and rise again. Several are removed. Return fire from the rear warrior squad alongside the Lord's staff of light see almost all of my right BSS squad destroyed. I pass morale and stay in the game. Assault phase sees 2 of the 3 remaining Necrons eviscerated again. Canoness remains locked in combat:

Note ecstatic 6 year old boy.

Turn 4 Papa: My one solid sister squad breaks for the covering flank on the left, and scores a 6 on the run roll. The mangled squad of 3 moves forward and pops off at the warriors in the back. Shooting does nothing. Canoness eviscerates her dance partner for the third time.

Turn 4 Tal: Assaulted warrior finally admits defeat against a huge chainsaw. Gauss fire and SoL fire from the rear squad destroy remaining sisters in mangled squad. VSS is naked in the open.

Turn 5 Papa: Surviving squad pops out and rapid fires necrons. 4 or 5 are killed. Canoness moves up to blow the Necron Lord a kiss. Lone VSS in the middle of the field rolls a 6 to hit and wound with her plasma pistol, rolls a 1 for Gets Hot!, 1 for her armor save, and is removed from play. Canoness assaults Lord and squad, dishing out 3 wounds, taking 6 in return. She passes 3, fails 3, and is killed.

Turn 5 Tal: WBB sees 4 or 5 warriors on their feet again. Gauss and SoL fire slays 3 sisters.

Final Score:

Tal 2, Papa 1

A solid victory for the Zombie Robots.

Awesome report. Haha I remember when I started wargaming, I still get that same look on my face when my Plasma Pask Russ wipes entire squads of marines out in one shooting phase lol.

On a side note I need some legos

Nice battle! Glad to see more kids started off on the hobby!

Side note the 'gets hot' of a plasma weapon is on the 'to hit' roll, not a separate roll as it looks like you did. Means your VSS would have survived firing her pistol,

The only time you roll separately for "gets hot" is blast weapons IE: sm with plasma cannon. as you dont roll to hit

ahh thanks; i was going by memory.

I also wasn't sure if, when my canoness wiped the warrior squad, when they made their WBB roll if they were still in an assault with the canoness. I left them in combat because it didn't make any sense to do it otherwise.

I love the idea of using legos to build ruins. I'm going to have to go dig out my old legos and get some terrain going.

Great battle report, and the look on your sons face was great.

As far as the necrons still being in HTH when they came back. I believe if when they satnd up, if they are within an inch away, they go into hth, no charge. If they are more than an inch away, for example, after the fight you consolidated a few inches away from the closest necron, they would just stand up and not be in combat.
