First novel for 40k in a particular series or just generically about 40k? Published by GW (or arm thereof) or fan fiction?
40K has been around for quite some time now and there has always been fiction of some sort attached to it.

Produced by GW or BL which ever came first...and by the whole i mean the first novel ever set in the dark millennium

I think Ian Watson's novels might have been the first. He wrote the Inquisitor trilogy and Space Marine. His novels feel a bit out of place now, though.
