Necrons aren't popular for a variety of reasons.

-Necrons are an old army.
-Necrons suck competitively.
-Necrons aren't much fun to play for a lot of people.
-Did I mention we still have a ****ing Third Edition Codex?

Oh yeah, I forgot another thing: Necrons are incredibly annoying to play against, due to stuff like WBB, teleportation, and the Monolith.

I've been playing Warhammer 40,000 since 1988, and am just coming back from a bit of a 10-year hiatus. And please excuse any wild accusations, hallucinations, or outright factual errors, as I am recovering from a serious head injury. And Warhammer 40,000 is part of my therapy. OH YEAH!

We are slowly coming back from our sleep. Necron players are the only guy who take their fluff to a whole new level where they will act like their army exactly.

A mate and I have both recently started playing Necrons.

At our club Necrons are now more popular than IG, Tyranids (never seen played) & Eldar and just as popular as Orks and Space Marines.

They obviously have their issues though, the main one for me being the cost as they have lots of metal figures still. A Unit of 10 Immortals would cost £85 from GW!

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

At my FLGS, I have only seen Necrons once, and that person was only there once and did not play a game. So I have no personal experience with them, but they definitely lack any kind of personality as a army, being the 'emotionless evil' like the Tyranids.

<--Daemon player...but in process of getting Necron army for two reasons:

1. I like playing stuff that isn't normally seen. It puts some diversity in games, and alot of players don't know how to handle you.

2. They are due for a new codex VERY soon...which should hopefully make them more competetive. So the day it comes out, I'll already have the army.

They can be competetive...but it's hard with their phase out rule. And you should be scared of Monoliths.

Personally I like them. I have very fond memories of obliterating an IG army! I took out two leman russ demolishers and a hellhound in first turn. Necron Lord and 5 immortals gave the mortar platoon a severe kicking in the second turn. The problem I have with them is the high points cost; you are going to constantly be outnumbered by any army and to be honest they are not super powerful as it is. They certainly don't equal the points cost.

They'll be back...

This is a little story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

The main problem is their codex is so very old, they have only one troops choice and the fluff isn't great. Of course, Phase Out puts a lot of people off playing Necrons too.
