Is it better to collect one BIG army or several small ones of different races. i have a 300 point marine army but wish to collect something else i was thinking of starting to make small 1000pt armys of each race.

It really depends on how your gaming buddies want to play. If everyone likes 1000-point games, then it's a great way to go. If your opponents are itching for 1500-point games, then building 1000-point armies is going to leave everyone with less than their expected gaming experience.
I personally like 750- to 1000-point games, but my friends like 1500+ point games. So our compromise is 1250 points. They've all been playing since 3rd edition, and I'm just getting back into it, so they all have a big army. Me, I am always working on the next one. I've finished 1250 points of Eldar, just finished 1500 points of Space Marines tonight, and am starting my Witch Hunters next (finishing, really, as I am using a lot of stuff originally painted for other projects back in the day,) also planned out to 1250 points.
In fact, the way I am churning out new armies has inspired one of my buddies to start a second army...

I've been playing Warhammer 40,000 since 1988, and am just coming back from a bit of a 10-year hiatus. And please excuse any wild accusations, hallucinations, or outright factual errors, as I am recovering from a serious head injury. And Warhammer 40,000 is part of my therapy. OH YEAH! |

Either way is fine. I know people who have entire space marine companies represented in model form. And I have loads of small groups of models from armies I will likely never make a full force of. Mainly because I really enjoy painting models I like the look of. If you enjoy the painting and collecting then go get them.

I'd think big armies that you can cut up to smaller armies is the way to go.

I think it is totally up to you. Personally I hate playing games below 1500 points and my gaming group is the same. When I buy a new army I buy it in a block of 1500 points then play with it and add new units as I learn. It all depends on your disposable income and the size games your gaming group plays. If no one ever goes above 1000 points then several small armies sounds more interesting. Personally I prefer to build armies to battle company/warband size and then move on.

I think i might, firstly due to the fact i have a 3000 point marine army if i ever have a chance to play Apoc. and as for people i play with... they dont collect warhammer (i taught them my self) so if i have 1000 point armys it will be fair. Thanks every one.

I tend to plan out a 1500 point army, buy it, paint it, once painted start playing and wok out what works what doesn't. I Keep trying to set limits to my armies but my CSM are now 8K, Daemons 6K and I think my eldar are almost at 5K now.

This hobby does get much easier once one gets a job.
What point size games do your friends play? I ask because in my group we each have a 2000+ point army and then several under 1000 point armies that we play with occasionally. I really think it comes down to what you want.
For example, lately I have been getting into more of the hobby end of minatures, so painting and modeling. I've been buying models that I think are cool lately so I have alittle bit for each army.

That is the thing i love the fluff so i want a little of each army.
Me and my friends prefer the story of games and play only with what i have.
