Night of the Wolf

A blood red moon rose from behind the mountain. Its glow set the ruins of battle alight with a deathly pale red hue. Twisted metal, blasted rock and ruined vehicles littered the battlefield. The crimson glow disguised the bloodied corpses that were scattered amongst the ruins.

The boy stirred, revealing himself from under a pile of rubble. Under the shadow of the mountains, he shambled across the battleground. He felt a throbbing pain all over his battered body and could feel hunger trying to claw out of his malnourished frame. All of these mattered not to him; he was searching for something. He spied a rock and with his trembling arms, he picked it up and continued his way through the ruins. In the pale red light, he prowled amongst the piles of corpses, searching. There, on top of the largest mound of bodies, he spotted what he was looking for. Slowly, he made his way up, rock in hand and vengeance in his heart. At the top, he saw a most pathetic sight.

Blood stained the man's face and ruined armor; that of his own and that of the rest, none could say. The red light did not help disguise the anger in the boy's eyes. Suddenly, the man awoke, oblivious of the child standing at his feet. The first blow; the boy smashed the rock into the man's face, catching the man off guard as soon as he had awoken. The boy could feel anger and hate boiling within him, pushing him further to kill the man.

He remembered the man; he had been his former captor. He remembered the darkness, unbearable heat and stinging stench down below in the mines. He remembered how this man took him away from his family to work in the mines. The boy relished the thought of ending this man's life. With his remaining strength, the man cocked up his head and opened his mouth. "Forgive me." These were the man's final words before the boy finally brought the rock to his former captor's skull; the boy no longer cared for forgiveness.

He stood on top of his kill's corpse and bellowed a roar of primal fury that echoed through the ruins below him . Weakened as it was ,the boy collapsed and tumbled from on top of the mound, landing face down on the filth. Regaining his senses, he lifted his head , facing to see the dark shadow of the mountain in front of him. "Stand up child." said a voice behind him. Startled, he stood up and spun around to face the voice. Before him towered a monstrous figure. But this was no beast, but a man, a giant of a man.

He was armored in bone-white armor, gilded with gold and silver. He was unarmed, save his crackling gauntlet. He wore no helmet; the boy saw the face of a killer. The warrior's head was bald, his eyes menacing, yet on his face, cracked a little smile. This was not the first warrior the boy had seen before; it had been barely five hours since he last saw one. The boy recalled the battle he had witnessed, a host of these bone-white armored warriors faced a horde of armed men, outnumbered five to one.

The titanic warrior spoke; "A fine kill, child." The boy said nothing and continued only to stare up to the warrior. From behind him another warrior lurked and said, "This one's a brave one, Lupercal.", "A strong one too, from what we've seen." said another warrior who appeared from the boy's other flank. The largest of the three, the first warrior, ignored the other two and said, "Come child, and I will give you glory."

Sons of the Wolf

The warrior regained his senses. Darkness and the sound of rushing wind filled the air around him. He recalled the roar of the engines on the white-armored transport that took him from his own homeworld. It had been many moons ago since then.

"Impact in five seconds" echoed his comrade's voice from the surrounding dark.

He felt his pod slam into the ground, relishing the thought of having crushed enemy soldiers under his craft. The doors of his pod blasted open. A sea of green plague the rays of white that flooded his vision. He saw hundreds of them, greenskinned muscular creatures, standing as tall as he and his own warriors. They were slightly advanced xenos, capable of communication and weapon making. Crude were their weapons and armor, but the greenskins made up for it with cunning, toughness, and raw brutality. They were a force to be reckoned with.

"For the Emperor!", he roared, as he led his squad into the charge.
With his weapon in hand, and his aim perfectly leveled, he opened fire. The shells impacted his first target and with a bloody explosion, the first greenskin was felled. He revved the engine of his chainsword as the greenskins neared sword's length. He bellowed as he brought his whirring blade through a greenskin's neck.
As the body of the beheaded ork fell, the sergeant watched as the rest of the assault force's pods streak through the sky like flaming, whistling comets.

The warriors around him began to engage into assault with pistols and chainswords, emerging from the pods they were transported in. He felt rage building up inside of him as he saw the first of his comrades die; his comrade was caught off guard and was run through with a crude heavy blade. The next greenskin, he slashed in the belly knocking it back, blood and entrails flying from the wound. He emptied the rest of his clip into the mouth of another greenskin, blowing its brains out and hitting the other behind him square in the chest. The warrior muttered a curse, as he felt a round slam into his shoulder. Fighting through the pain, he continued to dismember and decapitate a dozen other greenskins. Another round flew past his head grazing his helmet, rendering it useless.

He turned to see, through the lifeless lenses of his helmet, the largest of the greenskins, armored in crude, patched up, metallic armor, armed with a claw coruscating with deadly energies and a crude double-barreled heavy gun. He tore off his helmet and spied two of his squad members, "Gaddon, Thoth, to me!" he ordered.

His warriors complied, and covered his every movement as he charged toward the hulking menace. He dodged explosions, bullets and other greenskins, making his way to the towering boss. The boss took notice of the young sergeant charging towards him, he roared and turned to face his challenger. With perfect form, the warrior-sergeant leaped with chainsword roaring, ready to bring the blade to the Ork's head. Before the sergeant could react, the Boss caught him mid-flight and crashed his claw into the warrior's chest plate, slamming his challenger to the ground. The Ork stabbed his claw to the ground to deliver the final blow, but caught only empty air, as the warrior rolled to the side dodging the deadly claw. His timing was perfect, the sergeant rammed his blade into the back of the Ork's knee, forcing it to kneel on the ground. The sergeant's warriors caught up behind him and opened up on the Ork boss. The mass-reactive shells exploded a split second later, blasted bloody chunks out of the Ork's body. The Ork Boss muttered an unintelligible snarl, before the warrior-sergeant brought his blade to the Ork's exposed neck, severing its head.

The flames of battle were dying down quickly, soon after, only the dead remained sprawled on the cragged earth. The warriors' white armor was stained dark red with Ork blood and splattered with mud. The warrior-sergeant followed his comrades, as all the remaining warriors gathered around two massive figures. The first was his father, the Primarch, armored in gold, the warrior he had met as a mere child, now the Warmaster of the Imperial army. The second stood almost as tall as his son, armored in gold as well, he projected an aura so awe-inspiring, the sergeant and his comrades were compelled to drop to their knees in reverence; he was the all-father, the master of the Imperium and the Emperor of Mankind. The Primarch spoke, his voice loud and resonating, "My sons! Today is a glorious day for the Legion!" The entire Legion cheered, before he continued, "Today marks the end of the Ullanor Crusade!" The warriors roared in approval.

All went silent as the Emperor raised his hand to speak,"Your Warmaster has trained you well, and I am proud to have fought side by side with each and every one of you", "This victory is a decisive step in my Great Crusade.", "I am proud to call you heroes of the Imperium and of all Mankind."

Testament

"Murder, they call it" said the warrior-sergeant , barely audible over the hard rain and winds beating on them. "Murder?", "Pshaw, I'd say this is murder.", muttered the lieutenant to his side. "It is as the Emperor wills, Lucius" replied the captain behind them.

They were a small detachment, no more than five squads at most, sent to reinforce their comrades further in the jungle. The unforgiving weather caused their transports to fly too low, making them prime targets for the eight-legged insect xenos that infested the planet. Two legions were sent, to cleanse the planet; it was slow work, even for them, Mankind's greatest warriors.

The lieutenant of the Emperor's Children, all armored in purple and gold, had point. "Contact!", yelled a warrior of the sergeant's legion, as a hideous megarachnid screeched and charged at them. The right flank of their wedge formation opened up to down the insect with a torrent of mass-reactive shells.

"Ambush!" yelled a purple armored warrior, as the sergeant watched one of his comrades get speared by the xeno's talons. The death-shrieks of the first attracted more xenos, and soon they were surrounded by dozens of the beasts. "Fall back to the ridge, we'll hold them of there!" bellowed the Emperor's Children captain. They covered each others' retreat, downing another one of the megarachnids. One of their comrades was impaled from behind as one of the xenos erupted from under the earth below him. Another five men were lost during the retreat, two were overwhelmed by the xenos' rending talons and the other three were killed by having spines fired and driven through their armor.

The torrential rain seemed to do little to hinder the megarachnid's advance. They were monstrous creatures, standing as tall as an Astartes, possessing a rock-hard carapace and having a sinewy and fleshy exterior. They were incredibly deadly as well, having possessed spine launching muscles on it's back, six five-foot talons and a venom-filled maw. Their heavy weapons specialist was only able to eliminate a dozen of the damned beasts, exploding their bodies with fist-sized heavy shells, before retreating to the ridge.

"We're running low on ammunition!" called out the lieutenant, "Best we counter-attack now!". "Agreed" replied the sergeant and captain in unison, over the vox. "For the Emperor!" the warriors roared. Nigh on twenty of them remained. The sergeant and captain fought back to back. The sergeant pumped rounds into the nearest attacking xeno, and with his crackling broadsword, the captain smote the beast and sliced off its head. The captain slashed off the fore-talons of the next beast, and then the sergeant emptied the rest of his clip into its mouth. The sergeant slid a magazine home, and in perfect rhythm, he and the captain held off four more of the damned beasts.

At last, the warrior-sergeant spotted the megarachnid's broodmother; it was much larger than the rest and carried more spines on its back.
"Gaddon, cover me!", "Thoth, watch Saul's rear!"
Brother Gaddon fired bursts of heavy rounds into the oncoming beasts, maiming and killing five of them nearest the broodmother. The sergeant used this prime opportunity to direct his attentions to the broodmother. He opened fire on the beast, hitting all his marks. The mass-reactive rounds exploded the creature's chitinous carapace, and reduced it to craters of pulped gore. The creature, agitated, fired its spines at the sergeant, slamming them into his auto-reactive plates before charging.

The sergeant held his ground, ignoring the wounds he had just sustained, combat knife drawn, anticipating the broodmother's impact. He felt the full force of the creature's mass crash into him, buckling his armor. The sergeant grappled with the beast, avoiding its lunges and slashes. Caught in a bad position, the sergeant was impaled by one of the creature's talons at the point where his shoulder guard met his chest plate. Reversing his position cost him much blood, but he managed to get on the creature's back, just near its neck. The beast bucked and kicked as it realized the sergeant's bulky armor on its back. Struggling to hold on, the sergeant slashed and nicked the beast's neck, spewing some acidic blood on to the ground. The sergeant then finally, slammed his combat knife into the beast's head. With a thunderous snap of skull-bone and implosion of brain matter and viscous acidic blood, the beast finally collapsed on the jungle floor.

It had been the final kill of the day, the rest of the megarachnids retreated back to the jungle, badly beaten and leaderless. "Get an Apothecary take a look at that" said the Emperor's Children captain. "I'll live" replied the sergeant. The sergeant observed himself from a puddle on the ground. He saw where the blood had stained his armor, he could see the remnants of his old bone-white armor under his now pale green plate. He looked up to the sky from observing his armor, looking quite distant. Seeing that the rain had stopped, he repeated, "I'll live".

Vengeful Spirit

Building-sized craters scarred the bloodied ground, the sky was dark from the ashes of ruins and of incinerated remains. No, not a single body remained. No, not bones, only dust and armor. Every warrior, xeno, man, woman and child's bodies reduced to nothing more than blackened ash and decaying matter. The firestorm and virus cloud finally passed. The planet had not known such silence in ten thousand years.

Exterminatus

The sound of hissing air escaped into the ruins, as the blast doors of a bunker re-opened. A cloud of mist billowed out from the doorway. A gust of wind cleared out the mist, revealing the massive armored behemoth stepping out from the darkened bulkhead. He was armored in a pale green plate with an eye emblazoned in black ink on both his shoulders. On his right hand, he hefted an axe that glowed with deadly energies. On his left hand, he was armed with a large gauntlet, coruscating with small arcs of lighting.

"What happened, brother?" said a voice behind the sergeant-champion. The second of the warriors stepped out of the bunker;he was armored in a dull gun-metal plate, only slightly decorated with green and silver pauldrons. "No word from the Warmaster?" said the third, armored in rich purple and gold. "Where are the others?", asked another, armored in dirty white and sky-blue.

"Nothing yet from the Vengeful Spirit", the fifth said, a warrior of the champion's legion.

"Loken? Tarvitz? Ehrlen?"

"Nothing, brother, not even the Andronius, Endurance or Conqueror"

"It's best we move on, brothers", said our terminator-champion. "Gaddon, you take point."

They marched cautiously under the shadow of the Dies Irae. Around them, the world was dark. Deafening silence filled the air, not a single living thing stirred.

"What are we still doing here?" asked the purple-armored warrior. "We are doing what the Emperor wills, brother." replied the warrior of the Death Guard. "To what end, brother?", snapped the purple-armored warrior. "It is not our place to question." said the World Eater. "Of course it isn't,
only to you simple-minded barbarians!" the warrior of the Emperor's Children retorted. "You watch your mouth! Cowards, the lot of you Emperor's Children!" fired back the World Eater.

The purple-armored warrior reacted with a swift punch that clocked the World Eater in the jaw. Enraged, the World Eater tackled the warrior of the Emperor's Children. With no weapons and no ammunition, the two beat each other, wrestling on the ground. The World Eater had the upper hand, repeatedly beating his fist into the purple-armored warrior's face.

"That's enough!" roared the terminator-champion."Gaddon, deal with them." he ordered.

The World Eater was about to bring another blow to his opponent's bloodied face. Brother Gaddon then struggled to break up the squabble, attempting to grab the World Eater's arms. It took the combined strength of Brother Gaddon and the warrior of the Death Guard to restrain the World Eater.

.........

The vox crackled back into life as hundreds of other bunkers began to open up. As many more armored warriors exited their bunkers, a voice began to vox inside the warrior-sergeant's helmet, "What are you doing there my son?". "Warmaster, what happened? Widowmaker ordered me to help support Loken's lines". "Alone? Damn him... Listen to me carefully, my son, there has been a betrayal, the Emperor has forsaken us"

.........

"You see those men around you? They are traitors, betrayers of the Crusade."

.........

"The Emperor has marked us as traitors, and has turned your brothers against us"

.........

"You know what you must do, as I will it"

"Yes Warmaster, understood."

"What's wrong brother?" asked Gaddon, "Captain Tarvitz requests our presence, sergeant." added he.

"No"

The terminator-sergeant punched his gauntleted fist into his comrade's chest. Blood and gore splattered onto the sergeant's armor. Gaddon fell knelt to the ground, as the terminator brought his fist out of the warrior's chest plate. With a final gasp, the warrior breathed, "Why?", before finally collapsing to the ground. "What have you done?" demanded the warrior of the Death Guard.

"What have I done?"

The terminator charged at the remaining warriors, bellowing in outrage. "Traitors!". He was incredibly fast despite his bulky armor. With a thunderous slam, he cleaved the Death Guard warrior's head, slicing all the way into his chest plate. The enraged World Eater retaliated with a heavy rock, only to be disemboweled by the terminator's bloodied axe. The warrior of the Emperor's Children was able to grab a discarded bolter and emptied its remaining rounds into the terminator's body. "Futile." the terminator, muttered as he slammed his fist into the purple-armored warrior. The warrior lay crumpled on the ground as the terminator lumbered toward him. With his powered fist, he lifted his attacker by the neck, and with an explosion of blood and bone, he crushed the warrior's skull.

The sound of thunder and lightning erupted, with a blinding flash ten other armored figures materialized behind him. "A fine kill, brother" said one, tall and imposing. "No point in lingering here, we have jobs to do" said another. Both were armored in the terminator armor he wore.

"Little Horus, Abaddon" the terminator-champion greeted. "It's time we finished off these traitors, as the Warmaster wills it."

The roar of engines flooded the air, as hundreds of transports descended from the clouds. The world around him devolved into utter chaos, fires raged and skirmishes broke out. The sounds of death and clashing steel resounded once more amongst the ruins. The Battle of Istvaan III had begun.

No, this is not the last update, and yes, I need an editor. Please PM me if any are interested. I'm going to be filling this thread with SM\CSM short stories, hence the non-related name. It would be as if an aged dreadnought would be telling the story. The first post is probably the largest of my stories, and there are three more updates to come, possibly by this week. It's more or less still a WIP, but please feel free to leave a comment below.

Thanks to Ms. L, my English teacher, for picking my fanfic.

Well written, cool, story. Very well researched as well, you must have read some of those HH novels. Shame it's not about a dreadnought though. Thought the beginning was a brilliant set up for a chaos dreadnought character still haunted by that first kill.. I am sure you'll get more readers as it is above average in quality, plus if i replyed someone else will soon.

Thank you!

I plan on finishing the rest of the story this weekend. I am undecided on turning this into an article instead of a thread. Any advice is welcome, since I plan on making this a long-term compilation of stories.

The next story will be about the Filipan* IG Regiment and the Ultramarines.

So ends my first SM story. It will be continued later in Black Legion. Comment any suggestions and critiques. I'm still in need of an Editor.

The title of the thread confused me. I thought the boy in the first story ended up being interred into the shell of a Dreadnought.. :( Your stories are cool, though.

"Little Horus, Abaddon" the terminator-champion greeted. "It's time we finished off these traitors, as the Warmaster wills it."

Was he greeting both Aximand and Abaddon?

I get that a lot

Regarding the quote, well, yes.

Also, the first post is meant to be a single story, the headers are time intervals, as there is only one main character, the Luna Wolf.

Might want to put one more paragraph spacing between the last story and the start of the next.

What's 'Awakening' about?

Doesn't the end of Awakening give it away?

Thanks! Sadly, I'm taking a break from writing for now. My next project\installation will be a story of the Secrets of Rak'noll.

Also, in Dakka's opinion, should I just make this in to an article for the mean time?
