So, while playing Brutal Legend the other day, I had a thought: What if there were a Table Top game like mordheim that was Metal based. Every faction would be based off of a style of Metal, and the game itself would be like Brutal Legend, Chess, and Mordheim had a threesome.
I don't have much worked out as of yet, but this is what I do:
Every warband has to have a Leader. Not sure if he should be called Leader, Lead, Guitarist, Soloist, what have you. Like your King in Chess, if he dies, you automatically lose, because the music dies. He has guitar solos that he can play (like magic in Mordheim) that do various effects depending on what faction he is a part of.
Factions:
Heavy Metal: Good all around warband for beginners. Solos do all sorts of effects, from blasting enemies to buffing allies. Would be designed to be Jack of All Trades type of army.
Death Metal: Offense, Offense, Offense. These guys would be fast and hard hitting, but wouldn't last long to any sort of counter attack.
Hair Metal: Lots of guys, Lots and lots of weak guys. Their solo's disrupt their enemies.
Power Metal: Not very many guys, and they can only beat the Hair Metal Men individually, but their Solos focus solely on buffing their own, so as they start as weak, but after all their buffs are applied, they are the strongest individually.
Grunge Metal: Defense, they are the Battle of Attrition warband.
Solo's: Solos would be cast on 2D6, on a 5+ Effect A happens, on Nat 12 Effect B happens, but you roll for it as one Riff. Also might change Solo to Riff.
Earthshaker (Heavy Metal)
7+: Roll a D6. Enemies within that distance are moved out to that distance and take 10 damage. (roll 4", for instance, and the enemy at 2" is pushed out 2" and takes 10 damage). If it can not move the full distance, it takes an additional 10 damage. If it hits another model, both models are moved out and both take the full damage amount.
12: Enemies within the distance rolled take an additional 15 damage, and every enemy on the board suffers from -1 movement.
This idea is just in the beginning stages, so take everything with a grain of salt. Also, the name is subject to change. I am eager to see what you guys have to say.
Edit: Also, I am unsure of to make this Human vs Human, or add in Daemons and Beasts and stuff.
Edit 2: Some typo's/forgotten information was put in, and I have figured out the basic storyline of this now:
The King of Darkness has ruled over Alloyim for the past hundred years, during which Peace and Metal have been abundant. But when the King of Darkness dies, and the Prince of Darkness ( ) disappears, the Fans of Alloyim are now up for grabs. Each War Band must now gather its Fans and battle for control of Alloyim. It is unknown as to whom will emerge victorious, but one thing is certain: This is going to be one hell of a show
Unit types:
Lead: Your Riffing Guitar soloist. Protect him at all times.
Bandmates: Could weild various musical instruments to various effects. Bass to heal, Drums for AoE damage, Keyboard for buffs, Vocalists for moral.
Groupies: Your basic Mosh pitting Melee users.
Fans: Only there to serve the band, but be careful, they will have a low leadership and are pron to fleeing.
Stats are decided upon:
Movement: (M) = As is in Mordheim, you can Move your value, or you can Run and charge up to double.
Talent (T) = Weapon Skill and Ballistic Skill rolled into one.
Damage (D) = How much Damage you deal per hit.
Damage Reduction (DR) = How much damage is taken off of the amount you take. If you take 20 D, but have a 5 DR, You only take 15 damage. You always take at least 5 D from attacks.
Initiative (I) = As is.
Attacks (A) = As is.
Leadership ( LD) = As is.
Health (H) = Everyone has 50 Health which can be upgraded to 75 health total by leveling up, and it is reduced by Damage until you are reduced to 0.
Instruments:
Instruments work much the same as the Riffs, but on one dice. You roll one dice on it. On a Natural 6, you apply the second ability, also. (playtesting is just resulting in me spamming Bass to heal the Lead, so I am thinking of a suitable workaround, currently. Getting back once I test a few theories out.)
Bass:
4+: Heals target ally within 18" for T*5 damage. So if your Talent is 3, you heal for 15 damage. 5, heal for 25.
6: Grants a 5 DR to ally you just healed until end of turn.
Drums:
4+: Blast weapon that deals (T-1)*5 small blast damage to an enemy within 24".
6: Put the Large Blast template on top of model hit. All models underneath that template suffer -1 Move until end of turn.
Still working on Vocals, Keyboard, and Backup Guitar.
Weapons:
Fists: -5 D
Club: Normal, no penalties, no bonuses.
Dagger: -5 DR on target for attacks made with Daggers.
Great Club: +20 D, - 2 I
Armor:
Street Cloths: No bonuses
Basic Costum: +5 DR
Elaborate Costume: +10 DR
Miscelanious:
Band Merch: +x to Fan Leadership
Kings Notes: +1 to Riff Checks
Makeup: ????

Just having these five right off the bat, I will probably add more in later on. Still in the "trying to figure out points/ what the hell everything is going to do" stage, as of yet.
A Black Ram wrote:And Viking,Pirate, and don't even think about putting what teenagers dare call metal '' screamo''.
Probably won't be adding Viking and Pirate until much, MUCH later, and no, I hate Screamo. If someone want's to play Screamo "Metal", they can make a FanBand.

Again, not until later.

Why not have more varieties of music? Confining it to metal is just so... limiting.
I mean, I'm kind of biased, since I don't like metal at all (I'm more of a punk/post-punk/goth rock kind of guy), but I still think it's a fair point.

Black metal faction should all have horrible stats and I propose this special rule
"oww my eyes" Every black metal unit must roll a D6 at the start of its turn on a roll of a 1 they cant move or shoot for a turn as they clean there gay make up out of there eyes.
Ive never seen a genre of music attract nerds like black metal. except in Norway its serious business in Norway.

Because Metal is the bestest! Also, if I did use all types of music I would
A) Have to include rap
B) Be biased in my rules with Metal. Not intentionally, but it would happen.

No dude, you have to buy makeup and apply it to gain it's rules. What those rules are, I have no idea yet.

Ok, I have Heavy Metal balanced against itself, so that is good.
Also, I have decided that Bandmates can not target other friendly Bandmates with their instruments; they practice together, they are unimpressed by their not streaks.

You could have an infiltrating unit that sets up near an enemy band's fans and sells knockoff t-shirts. This counters the band's own merchandising efforts.
You could send a very influential groupie to the enemy who boosts fan morale, but whose actual objective is to alienate one member of the band from the others, so that if he ever rolls a 1 on any dice roll, there is a chance he is kicked out of the band.
Or, you could try to infiltrate a drug peddler into a fan's roadies, who randomly applies penalties to their rolls.
Remember, this is metal, not lovey-dovey hippie music.

This is true, I bought some of their spacelords back in the day. Some of them have been modded into my BA army and I still have a rediculous non-speacelords figure of theirs called "Rambo Rabbit" A skinny bunny with an m16!
Metal Magic is defunct, but the name might still be owned by whoever bought up Hobbygames ltd. EM4 miniatures -they have some other non MM figs of rockers you should check out- owns the rights to their Spacelords figs and Mega Minis has many, possibly all, of their fantasy figs.
However, even if all that is true, it might still be ok to have a game named Metal Magic since there isn't a game by that name, just do you homework before you release it.
Best of luck with what sounds like a great project!

Meh, I was never really planning on getting it going as "Metal Magic", it was more of just a.... placeholder? name.
Anyway, I have run into a snag: I'm not sure if I want to have the instruments do the same thing across the board, or make them different per Band. As of now Lead Guitar is the only thing that changes.
Also.... I need help coming up with the name of a rule. You see, I want to add in a rule where if the player gets five Perfect Riffs, one of those being the Lead Guitar, in a turn, he automatically wins. That would require a Natural Twelve, followed by four Natural Sixes, so it wouldn't happen that often, but hey, it would still be awesome to have your band play that well that there is just no competition.

I think that standard instruments could be the same across the board, but specific instruments could have special powers. The trick would be capturing the feel of a specific gutar without stepping on a copywrited name.
A few popular brands and models of metal guitars to consider
Gibson: Les Paul
BC Rich: Warlock, Mockingbird and others
Kramer (mostly suped up strat styles)
ESP: Many varied models, check them out
Jackson: Randy Rhodes model (modified V) and others.
Flip through an issue of Guitar Player or a Musicians Friend catalog (they'll send them to you for free) to get more ideas.
Also, Instead of Backup guitar, you might want to call it Rhythm guitar. Also, differentiate between your lead singer and lead guitarist, as usually they're not the same person. They should both have powerfull stats that are different but complimentary.

Oh, thanks for that. Will definately have to check it out.
And thanks for the Rhythm Guitar name, I am going to use that. As for Lead Singer and Lead Guitarist, there is no Lead Singer. As most of you (should) know, I am basing this off of three things: Chess, Mordheim, and Brutal Legend. Part of the Brutal Legend bit is the main character being a Guitarist, not a singer.
Anyway, thinking also about Axing Grunge Metal, and adding in something else, because the current Grunge Metal is far too much paper work for the game. I either need to axe it, or completely rework it, because you have to keep track of far too much for it to be a fast game.

What music do you think the various factions in Brutal Legend represent? At first I thought it was Metal vs. Other Music like grunge but it appears to all be intercinine Metal War. I think its:
IronHeade: Heavy Metal
Hair Metal Miltia: Hair Metal (duh)
Drowning Doom: Black Metal
Tainted Coil: Death Metal.

GWAR already beat you to it. You can still find them every now and then, but pretty much, they already have thier game like this.
Funniest thing they showed me when I saw this game back in the day was chasing the slave scum around the table. I laughed my ass off at the little Gimp boys and girls running around the table.
They still available?
I do miss me some GWAR guys.

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money. |

You would think I would be upset with that, but Meh, MEH I SAY!
I don't know enough about Metal, to tell the truth, to make a game based around it.
But I am working on a game I DO know alot about, I will post it when I get home from work (it's almost ready to be playtested right now).
