Nullzone - "Oh, you enjoy(or in Daemon's case, rely on) your invul save? Ha, sucks to be you!"

After that, it depends on what you want him to do, although Machine Curse sucks.

Wait, I just thought of something- use null zone, then smite on a termie squad-
"You have 2+ armour? POW! AP2!!"
"OH YEAH? WELL I HAVE AN INVULNERABLE SAVE!"
"oh do ya now? POW! Null zone! "
"HA! two survived!"
"WELL I HAVE A ING FORCE WEAPON! "
"oh shi-"

Null zone is amazing. It makes your CC squads (or anyone the Libby is attached to) much more dangerous to Daemons of Chaos, ICs, and other units (such as Seer Councils) that rely heavily on Invulnerable saves.

Avenger is just a good shooting attack. Useful for situations when your TH/SS terminators need their target thinned out a bit.

Poll results are pretty accurate so far, actually.

There is no "best" set of powers, but some powers are better than others in general.

The Avenger - its an AP3 heavy flamer. Templates automatically hit, and STR 5 AP 3 means it will usually wound what it touches. Reliable, one of the best all-around.

Quickening - People use this power with elipsotary to "snipe" characters with the force weapon... I don't like it. If it made your whole unit fleet that'd be great, but its just the Libby so.... yea. Even if he gets a good run and makes it into combat, you're still looking at a WS5 A2 character with no invuln in combat with their HQ. I say leave this one at home.

Smite - Seems okay on paper, but it is an assault 4 shooting attack so you need 3+ to hit, then only STR 4, so probably only 1-2 wounds. Sure these wounds are AP2, but its just a bit unreliable. Usually The Avenger is a better bet whenever you would use smite. A possible exception is against non-storm shield terminators, but how often do you see those?

Force dome - Possibly useful. Helps if you know a unit is about to get hit by a ton of low AP fire or power weapons. Still, a 5++ isn't going to save all that many guys. Usually vs shooting you'll get your 3+, or a 4+ cover, and if you're in combat vs lots of power weapons you're probably losing that tac squad anyway.

Machine curse - Single glancing hit? Shaking a vehicle can be useful, but there are other platforms in your army that are much better at this.

Null zone - The star of the show, and should be your default choice. Enemy's got hammernators? No problem. Need to kill that character? Boom. Dark elves got a bunch of 5++ on their vehicles? Watch them pop. And daemons... poor daemons.

Might of the Ancients - Makes you a monstrous creature in combat, okay I guess. Nice to have a S6 power weapon, and gives you a good shot vs armor. Not useful to me because I like to run this guy with my hammernators, and they take care of wrecking vehicles on their own. Also, the libby is still only WS5 T4 I4 A2, so still not a combat monster. And no, buying elipsotary so you can use this with quickening is not worth it.

Gate of Infinity - Also useful from time to time. dropping into rapid fire range with a squad of sternguard will not please your enemy, but you have to risk mishapping and losing them. Also the weird doubles-lose-a-model rule. I often use this to try to warp to objectives on turn 5, but that isn't exactly a reliable plan.

Vortex of Doom - This one is good for the lulz, but the only way you can effectively run it is if the libby is on a bike or in terminator armor, as you need relentless to use a heavy weapon with a 12" range. Of course on a bike, you don't have an invuln at all, so if you fail that test bye bye libby. For that reason I say you need the librarian to be in a unit with 3++ (i.e. assault terminators) or to pay for the termie armor and storm shield.

So I run my librarian in termie armor with my hammernators. I usually run Null Zone and Gate of Infinity in case my land raider gets popped. I'm thinking of playing around with vortex though...

You could use it for a more specialised purpose- although this is about what is best generally, it is use ful to kill termies combined with null zone. I still agree with your analysis, though.

In Terminator Armor w/ SS: Null Zone & Vortex of Doom.

In Power Armor: Null Zone & Avenger. (For an All-comers list).

Null Zone pretty much trumps every other power, IMHO.

Meh, Avenger for a bike Libby, better speed for better positioning of the template.
Where-as the type of targets that Vortex goes for is prob. not what the other bikers need to shoot at.
12" is commitment or die ranges.

Then there's the issue of perils and the instant gibbing himself for the lolz.

I like Vortex on a Librarian in Terminator Armor a bit more because of the Invul Save they get. Granted, you can actually avoid the ID on a failed Psychic Test, provided the Librarian is attached to a unit, but I still like the Terminator Armor better.

I tried running a Librarian on a Bike in a SM Bikers list. Worked great, except I found that the Librarian was a lot more vulnerable (and rightfully so, since it's saves weren't as good as they could've been).

For me, the best are: Null zone, the avenger, might o' the ancients, and gate of infinity. I think they should have rules for the Chief librarian of a chapter- have the same, but knows 3 or 4 powers, and can use 2 or 3 per turn. Imagine that- teleporting with gate, hitting with AP3 heavy flamer, before charging into combat with a S6 force weapon

Null Zone is awesome especially at my FLGS because of the meta game we have there.

But another reason is my friend will not field a Nightbringer ever again. 10 sternguard and a Libby with Null Zone in a Drop Pod made him a sad panda

Sigh... if only Tigurus had an invuln... or at least terminator armor... 230 points is way too much to lose to a single powerfist attack. The only way I could see fielding him is with 5x ASM in a rhino to babysit him, but that's 330 points and you won't get to use the assault powers without risking him.

For primary power (one you are taking the libby for) I prefer null zone, or gate of infinity. I don't recommend both on the same character, though there are armies that could make use of that... I prefer 1 utility power and one offensive power. So for offensive power I like avenger and vortex.

Usually I put avenger on a null zone libby, its a pretty good utility character that you can add an AP 3 HF to any squad that might use it.

I put the vortex on a termie librarian with gateway, SS, and extra power per turn. Its a bunch of fun teleporting around dropping S10 AP1 blasts. Pair with shooting (or otherwise even) termies (or sternguard) and add in some locator beacons (drop pods or scouts), and you have an annoying and scary guy.

That's what I'm doing- Vortex and Might of ancients for termie, Null zone and Avenger for biker libby, and Gate and avenger on Jump libby.

That's what I'm gonna do. Is it possible to take powers twice? probably not, but worth a try...

@shrike

You can upgrade the librarian to a Epistolary and use up to 2 power per turn. Obviously it can't be the same power twice, but you can use either both powers (assuming not in same phase) or one power and the force weapon effect.

So what I propose is to deep strike in the movement phase with gateway, then use vortex in the shooting phase.
