San Diego

So yesterday a good buddy and I played in the Double Trouble season 2 tournament at out local store Game Empire here in San Diego. The tournament was put on by www.gamesiplay.net and I have to say it was quite an enjoyable experience! Team Theoretical Warscythe finished with a record of 1-1-1 and considering the level of competition we saw we are relatively happy with that record, however our only loss was an extremely hard fought game for the 2nd place spot, and it was a narrow loss at that.

The tournament rules were pretty simple. 1,250 per player with no point sharing, and wargear/special rules/auras from one player did not affect the other (IE my Grey Hunters didn't benefit from the aura of his Blood Chalice). Games were 2 hours and 20 minutes, and at the 2 hour mark we were not allowed to start a new game round (which allowed us to finish the current round so both players got an equal number of turns). When time was called it was dice down. We went three rounds with the highest record determining the winner. Ties were settled by "tournament points" which were accrued by capturing objectives and/or receiving kill points depending on the mission. After that it came down to tournament points allowed. The only issue I have with this setup is that an army with a very low kill point total could be tabled in an annihilation mission but kill most of their opponents force, and stand higher in a tiebreaker than the team that beat them if they both ended with the same record, which seems odd.

Our lists were as follows:

Team Theoretical Warscythe

Blood Angels

Reclusiarch - 130
2x Sanguinary Priests (2x Jump Packs) - 150
9 Death Company (2x Power Weapon, Power Fist) - 235
10 Assault Marines (Power Fist, 2x Meltaguns) - 235
10 Assault Marines (Power Fist, 2x Meltaguns) - 235
Land Raider (Extra Armor) - 265
Total 1,250

Space Wolves

Rune Priest (Chooser of the Slain, Living Lightning, Murderous Hurricane) - 110
Rune Priest (Meltabomb, Murderous Hurricane, Tempest's Wrath) - 105
3 Wolf Guard (2x Power Fist, 3x Combi-Melta) - 109
8 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Rhino) - 170
8 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Rhino) - 170
5 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Razorback w/ TL Lascannon) - 155
5 Long Fangs (4x Missile Launchers, Razorback w/ TL Lascannons) - 190
Vindicator (Dozer Blade) - 120
Vindicator (Dozer Blade) - 120
Total 1,249

Round 1

Our game was against team Shoota Boyz running Imperial Guard and Orks. Their lists were as follows (from memory)

Imperial Guard

Lord Commissar
Infantry Platoon
-Command w/ 3x Plasma in Chimera
-Infantry Squad w/ Missile Launcher & Grenade Launcher in Chimera
-Infantry Squad w/ Missile Launcher & Grenade Launcher in Chimera
10 Vets w/ 3x Meltaguns in Chimera
Leman Russ Executioner
Leman Russ Vanquisher
Manticore

Orks

Warboss w/ Power Klaw
15 Boyz and Nob w/ Power Klaw and Boss Pole in Battle Wagon w/ Deff Rolla
11 Boyz and Nob w/ Power Klaw and Boss Pole in Trukk w/ Rokkit
11 Boyz and Nob w/ Power Klaw and Boss Pole in Trukk w/ Rokkit
11 Boyz and Nob w/ Power Klaw and Boss Pole in Trukk w/ Rokkit
11 Boyz and Nob w/ Power Klaw and Boss Pole in Trukk w/ Rokkit
15 Storm Boyz and Nob w/ Power Klaw

We lost the roll to go 1st and failed to seize the initiative. The game was Capture and Control w/ 4 Objectives placed before deployment. Each objective was worth 5 tournament points.

Turn 1:
On their turn the Orks rushed forward while the Guard shot at a distance (surprise surprise). We left the Assault Marines in reserves so they had a parking lot to crack and not much else. They did manage to knock the gun off one of my Vinidcators though. We retaliated by advancing and blasting the Storm Boyz with my remaining Vindicator, taking out about half the squad and rushing the other Vindicator forward to block my Long Fangs from assault. The Death Company disembarked from the Land Raider right next to a Trukk, but our dice betrayed us and we failed to land ANY of our anti-tank weapons on anything useful. Both of my TL Lascannons missed with double 2's, and I connected with a single missile on a Trukk but rolled a 1 for the result. The Death Company, Ironically, managed to take out the Trukk in front of them with their Bolt Pistols but it went careening 15" straight back and exploded harmlessly in front of a Chimera, well out of assault range and leaving the Death Company exposed. The other nearby Trukk got pegged by a pair of Meltaguns, but I only succeeded in knocking off the gun and immobilizing it.

Turn 2:
On their turn the Leman Russ Executioner blasted the Death Company leaving only the Reclusiarch and one guy with a Power Weapon alive. A few shots from a Multi Laser put the last guy down leaving the Reclusiarch out in the open, however he made every invulnerable save he was forced to make. The Vanquisher failed to hit my Vindicator with its main cannon, but the Lascannon caused an explodes result which resulted in a few dead Boyz that had disembarked nearby. The Manticore on the other hand rolled 3 shots, pegged one of my Rhinos and rolled 2 more hit results, flipping the templates onto my other Rhino and the Land Raider nearby. It knocked the gun off the Land Raider and both Rhinos exploded. One unit of Grey Hunters took a few casualties but the other survived unscathed. Neither failed their Pinning tests. Several shots from a Multi Laser put down one of my Long Fangs and a unit of Boyz came around for the assault while another went after my useless Vindicator. The Warboss and his Boyz piled out of the Battle Wagon and the Warboss left the unit. In the Assault Phase the Storm Boyz assaulted the unscathed pack of Grey Hunters, the normal Boyz assaulted my Long Fangs along with the Razorback holding the objective nearby, the Reclusiarch, the Vindicator and the empty Razorback, and the Warboss assaulted the Land Raider. My Grey Hunters killed off the Storm Boyz that assaulted them but the Power Klaw killed 3, the Reclusiarch killed a few Orks and managed to survive with a single wound remaining, my Long Fangs died a horrible death (and the Razorback nearby was immobilized and lost it's Lascannon), the empty Razorback was wrecked and the Vindicator exploded killing a few Boyz. The Warboss failed to do anything useful to the Land Raider.

On our turn one pack of Grey Hunters and their Rune Priest moved to assist the Reclusiarch while the other moved toward the Battle Wagon, and the Rune Priest left the unit in order to target the large unit of Boyz that had piled out and wrecked the empty Razorback. The Land Raider performed a Tank Shock on the Warboss who failed his morale test and ran away like a little girl (HA!), and my small pack of Grey Hunters disembarked their now useless Razorback and got into position to fire on the Boyz threatening their objective. Both units of Assault Marines and their attached Sanguinary Priests arrived this round and landed next to the Executioner. One of them immobilized and stunned it with their Meltaguns and the other took out the Melta-Vets Chimera, killing all but the Meltaguns and a single Lasgun. My Grey Hunters on the other hand failed to kill a single Boy with their shooting as my opponent passed every Cover Save he was required to take. The Rune Priest killed off a few Boyz with Murderous Hurricane though, and the Grey Hunters Immobilized the Battle Wagon, making it ripe for the picking. In the assault Phase my Grey Hunters came to the rescue of the Reclusiarch while the other pack assaulted the Immobile Battle Wagon and the Rune Priest dove headlong into the large pack of Boyz. The Reclusiarch and my unit wiped out their target, and my Wolf Guard blew up the Battle Wagon with his Power Fist, killing 5 Boyz in the unit the Rune Priest assaulted. The Rune priest killed several more leaving the unit woefully under strength and managed to pass every armor save he was required to take, however the Power Klaw landed a single wound and took him out.

Turn 3:
Our opponents decided to deal with the immediate threat of the Assault Marines and most of the Guard fired at them. My partner made some horrible rolls for armor saves and Feel No Pain and they took out about half of his squad while a unit of Boyz advanced for an assault. Thankfully most of the Meltaguns missed and they only managed a single wound. The Ork player tank shocked my 6 man pack of Grey Hunters twice, and my Meltagun made two successful Death or Glory shots killing both Trukks. One exploded nearby and took out a pair of Boyz from the unit nearby, and the other went careening off the board. The unit of Boyz that had previously destroyed the Vindicator ran into the Building with one of our objectives while the unit that had assaulted the Long Fangs came for my small pack. The Manticore fired at the Land Raider and failed to do anything. In the Assault Phase the remaining Boyz assaulted the small pack of Grey Hunters and the immobile Razorback still contesting their objective, and the Assault Marines bearing down on the Imperial Guard. The Grey Hunters were wiped out and the Razorback was wrecked but the Assault Marines held the Boyz in place.

On our turn the 2 hour call went out and I moved my remaining large pack of Grey Hunters back onto an uncontested objective and the open unit of Assault Marines claimed a second. We took a couple of long shots at a Chimera holding the third objective but failed to destroy it and their Boyz held the 4th objective, so the game ended in a 2-2 draw with both of us receiving 10 Tournament Points.

Round 2

Our game was against team Hive Fleet BA running Orks and Tyranids

Their lists were as follows (from memory):

Tyranids

Hive Tyrant w/ Paroxism and Leech Essence (possibly other gear as well)
10 Ymgarl Genestealers
10 Ymgarl Genestealers
3 Zoanthropes
30 Termagants
Tervigon with Catalyst, Cluster Spines and Toxin Sacs

Orks

Warboss in Mega Armor w/ Power Klaw and Cybork Body
Big Mek w/ Shock Attack Gun
8 Nobs w/ various equipment (including a Pain Boy) in a Trukk w/ Extra Armor
11 Boyz and Nob w/ Power Klaw and Boss Pole in Trukk
11 Boyz and Nob w/ Power Klaw and Boss Pole in Trukk
20? Shoota Boyz
3 Deffkoptas w/ Power Klaw and Big Shootaz
10 Lootaz

We lost the roll for first turn and failed to seize the initiative. The mission was Annihilation with each Kill Point being worth a single Tournament Point. Our opponent deployed the two large mob squads (Termagants and Shootaz) on the left side of the board with the Zoanthropes, the Tyrant and Tervigon in the middle behind a large rock with all of the Trukks, and the Big Mek set up the Lootaz on the right flank. The Deffkoptas set up next to the Lootaz. We deployed everything hard on the right flank for a refused flank strategy, using the Land Raider and the Vindicators to provide cover to the Rhinos, Razorbacks and Assault Marines. The Long Fangs set up on the top floors of a 4 level building on the right flank. Before the game started the Deffkoptas moved around 12" away from the Long Fangs. The Genestealers were of course hidden around the board and would not show up until later.

Turn 1:
The Orks advanced their Trukks in a line up the middle of the board, flanking around a building in the center. The Koptas came after the Long Fangs as predicted by their scout move and everything else except the Lootaz moved forward through terrain. The Lootaz knocked the gun off one Vindicator and Immobilized it early with a few lucky shots, The Shock Attack Gun missed the Vindicator but a double 3 jumped the shot onto the Razorback sitting right behind it and I passed my cover save. The Koptas completely failed to do anything to the Long Fangs and were well out of assault range as I was up 3 levels in a building and they had a good 4" between them and us. The Tervigon gave the Hive Tyrant Catalyst.

On our turn we advanced forward with everything and the Assault Marines prepared for an assault on the Koptas. The Land Raider moved toward where the Hive Tyrant/Tervigon while the Vindicator closed in on the Lootaz. The Grey Hunters advanced behind the Land Raider/Vindicator wall and the Razorbacks lined up for shots on Trukks, one of which used the immobile, unable to fire and gunless Vindicator for cover. Our shooting was mediocre though. The Vindicator pegged the Lootaz but rolled only 3 wounds out of 8 hits, and he passed all three cover saves, and the Long Fangs popped a Trukk (for once it just wrecked in place). One Razorback managed to connect but only caused a Crew Shaken result on a glance. The Assault Marines opened up on the Koptas, killing off the Boyz and causing a wound to the Nob, which they charged in the assault phase and murdered before he could attack.

End of turn 1: Score 2-0

Turn 2
The Tyranid player failed both of his reserves rolls so the Genestealers continued to lurk wherever they were hiding. For some reason our opponent decided to disembark with the Warboss and his Nobs in the middle of the board with nobody around. The Boyz that lost their Trukk advanced toward the incoming Land Raider, and the now empty Trukk moved forward to give them cover. The other Boyz also disembarked and moved into the central building while their Trukk sped off toward the Shootaz/Termagants that were still struggling through difficult terrain. The Tervigon and Hive Tyrant continued to sit behind their hill, however my Rune Priests were now in range to nullify their powers and prevented the Tervigon from casting Catalyst. The Lootaz stood still as usual. On their shooting phase the Lootaz fired on the Assault Marines who lost a single model, and pretty much everything else ran.

On our turn the Death Company moved around the central building in the Land Raider and disembarked within assault range of the Boyz inside. The Grey Hunters advanced to the center of the Board and both Rhinos popped smoke. The Assault Marines moved in on the Lootaz and the advancing Boyz while the Vindicator moved around the corner of the building and lined up a straight shot on the Nobs/Warboss. Two Lascannon shots at the Trukk in the back managed to stun it in place while another took out the one giving cover to the boyz in the middle. It exploded in place and caused a few casualties. The Vindicator took out 4 Nobs and the Long Fangs got LoS on the Hive Tyrant but the only wound they caused was saved by cover. The Death Company assaulted the Boyz in the building while the Assault Marines assaulted the Boyz that were hiding behind the Trukk, but the ones going for the Lootaz rolled snakeyes for difficult terrain and were unable to get in combat. The Death Company easily wiped out their target, as did the Assault Marines.

End of turn 2: Score 5-0

Turn 3:
The Genestealers both showed up this turn, one brood in the building with the Long Fangs and the other in the central building. The Nobs and Warboss advanced toward the Death Company and the Termagants finally got out of terrain and moved in on them as well. The Zoanthropes got in range to use their Warp Blast and the Shootaz continued to move into a forest. Finally deciding it was time to join the battle, the Hive Tyrant moved over the rock it was hiding behind and cast Paroxism on the nearby Assault Marines, but I countered it with my Rune Priest. The Genestalers in the central building set up surrounding my Rhino in anticipation of an assault (I was a little nervous about that because I had no room to disembark. They covered the front and back of the Rhino and my second Rhino blocked the right hatch while a wall blocked the left). The other brood moved up their building into assault range of the Long Fangs. In the shooting phase the Lootaz blew up my undamaged Vindicator, the Zoanthropes fired into the Death Company and I countered one shot with my Rune Priest, but only managed two wounds. The Termagants fired and my partner made all of his saves and Feel No Pain rolls. In the assault phase the Genestealers went after my Rhino and my Long Fangs, the Tyrant assaulted the Assault Marines and the Termagants and Nobs/Warboss assaulted the Death Company. The Tyrant killed a few Assault Marines but the Power Fist caused several wounds, leaving the combat at a standstill. My poor Long Fangs managed to kill a few Genestealers but lost most of the pack and ran away. Thankfully the other brood of Genestealers only managed to immobilize my Rhino, leaving the pack of Grey Hunters inside for retaliation. The Death Company killed a large number of Termagants and caused a few wounds on the Nobs before taking moderate casualties from the Power Klaws, again leaving combat at a standstill.

On our turn one large pack of Grey Hunters moved to deal with the Stealers that had taken a toll on my Long Fangs while the other disembarked, leaving the Rune Priest in the Rhino, in order to take out the second brood or Stealers. The small pack in the Razorback moved to assist on the right flank and the second Razorback moved away from the Stealers that could possibly threaten it. The Land Raider pulled back a bit and took up a firing position, but most everything worthwhile was in combat at this point. The Assault Marines that had failed to deal with the Lootaz before moved into guaranteed assault range. On our shooting phase I took out all but one Genestealer in the Long Fangs building and cut down all but 4 in the central building, but that was the extent of it. The Land Raider fired at the Zoanthropes but they made their saves. In the Assault Phase the Assault Marines jumped on the Lootaz, winning combat handily and routing them off the board while the Reclusiarch and his Death Company held the Nobs and the Warboss in place yet again. All of the Death Comapny were killed by Power Klaws but the Reclusiarch made all of his saves and actually won combat, though nothing ran away. The Assault Marines holding up the Hive Tyrant managed to punch it to death with the Power Fist, thought only two remained, and the Tyrant did manage to kill the Sanguinary priest by splitting his attacks. The Genestealers in the central building were still in base contact with the Rhino and knocked its gun off.

End of turn 3: Score 8-4

Turn 4:
Our opponents were desperate for kill points as the game was winding down. We knew there would be no 5th round due to time, so whatever they killed this round would have to be it. The Tervigon managed to get Catalyst off on itself and the Zoanthropes moved in on the Land Raider. The lone Genestealer moved deeper into the building but could not get out of LoS. The four remaining Genestealers moved to get everything in contact with the Rhino since they knew charging the Grey Hunters was suicide. The Tervigon moved in on the two remaining Assault Marines that had previously punched a Hive Tyrant to death and killed them off at range, leaving him stranded in the open. The Zoanthropes got two shots off on the Land Raider and hit with both, wrecking it. In assault the Genestealers finally managed to wreck the Rhino and the Reclusiarch failed a save on a Power Klaw, bringing the game to a tie right as the 2 hour call went out.

On our turn the relatively unscathed unit of Assault Marines leaped over the forest the Lootaz had been occupying and fired Meltaguns into the Tervigon, causing a pair of wounds. The Razorbacks drew a bead on the Tervigon as well, causing another pair of wounds and my Grey Hunters opened fire on the remaining Genestealers. The lone Stealer went down in a hail of gunfire and all but one in the other brood were killed off as well. The Assault Marines jumped on the Tervigon and put it down with regular attacks. The Tyranid player failed three saves, then rolled triple 1's for Feel No Pain before the Power Fist even got to attack. The game ended on turn 4 as our assault finished.

End of turn 4: Score 10-8

Having won our second game we had an odd record of 1-0-1 and 20 tournament points. Two teams were 2-0-0 and would face each other in the final round, however our previous opponent Shoota Boyz also won with an 18-8 victory, tabling their opponent. Everyone else was 1-1-0 or worse, and the TO decided to match players with like records, meaning we would have to face team Shoota Boyz again. Because of this situation, if the two 2-0-0 teams drew their final game, and either us or Shoota Boyz won, we would have a 3 way tie for 1st place and it would come down to tournament points for victory which did not bode well for us. However, if one of the 2-0-0 teams won, then the winner of our game would be 2n'd place while the loser of the other game got the 3rd place spot. It was definitely an interesting situation.

Round 3

Our opponent was Shoota Boyz again. Refer to the 1st round report for their list. Once again we lost the roll for 1st turn but in a stroke of luck we did seize the initiative. The mission was a special mission called "Conqueror" and the rules were as follows:

Each team places two objectives, one in their deployment zone, and one in the narrow strip of land between the center line of the board and the edge of their deployment zone. No objective could be within 8" of a board edge or within 8" of another objective. Each objective is worth three "Conquest Points". Additionally each enemy unit destroyed is worth a single "Conquest Point". At the end of the game the team with the most "Conquest Points" wins, and each "Conquest Point" is worth one "Torunament Point". Basically the scenario was a combined Objective and Kill Point mission where each Objective was worth 3 Kill Points. I found it to be a very interesting scenario.

Our opponents set up all of their ordnance on the left flank and then spread their forces across the board, using the Trukks to provide cover to the more important vehicles behind. We deployed hard on the left flank using what little cover was available to protect our vehicles since at that point we thought we would be going 2nd. This time though we deployed the Assault Marines in hopes of drawing fire away from the tanks.

Turn 1:
Having seized the initiative, we decided to COMPLETELY blow our turn and do absolutely nothing! My Rune Priest cast Tempest's Wrath to keep the Storm Boyz at arms length, and the Land Raider advanced through the corner of a ruined building while the Vindicators moved up field with the Razorbacks behind. The idea was to use the Vindicators to pop the Trukks in front, or failing that hope to scatter onto the Vanquisher and Executioner behind them. With the Trukks gone our Lascannons could get clear shots on the tanks behind. Our tanks shot beautifully, with both Vindicator shots scattering minimal distance to put the center of the template over the hulls of the two Leman Russ, but even though I rolled penetrating results with both shots on the Vanquisher and the Executioner, my opponent made both cover saves and I failed to dent the Trukks. Lascannon shots proved just as ineffective, pegging their targets and penetrating on almost every roll only to be denied by cover saves. The same with my Long Fangs who glanced the Executioner twice. All in all they made 8 out of 8 cover saves against 6 pens and 2 glances. Absurd!

On their turn all of the Trukks drove forward and their Chimeras moved to claim the two objectives across the board from us. In their shooting phase they managed to wreck one Vindicator and annoy the Assault Marines with Plasma shots through cover, however the Warboss disembarked from the Battle Wagon and charged to no avail. The Assault Marines held fast and won combat, but the Orks were still fearless due to numbers which put two wounds on the Boss and killed two Boyz.

End of turn 1: Score 0-1

Turn 2:
We opened our second turn with a bit more gusto than our first turn, though still managed to shoot ourselves in the foot. The Land Raider immobilized itself on the ruined building and one of my Rhinos immobilized itself trying to move over the wrecked Vindicator. My Rune priest did manage to cast Tempest's Wrath again without suffering Perils though so it wasn't too bad. Our shooting was a bit better this time around, as one Lascannon shot from the Land Raider took down the Manticore while my Vindicator knocked the turret gun off the Executioner and one of my Razorbacks stunned the Vanquisher. A pair of Meltagun shots popped one of the Trukks and sent it careening near the edge of the board behind impassable terrain where it exploded and stranded the unit. The Long Fangs took shots on the incoming Trukks but some of my opponents ridiculous luck came back into play and they made their cover saves against several penetrating hits. The unengaged assault marines moved into range of the Warboss and his Boyz and in the assault phase they pounced on the Warboss's unit and slaughtered them to a man.

Their turn saw them with almost no ordnance, but the Boyz hopped out of their Trukks and moved in on my cluster of vehicles for a nasty charge while the ones that were stranded ran toward the Executioner and the Vanquisher. They also moved the Stormboyz around in front of the Executioner and Vanquisher to give themselves cover, though they lost two in the process to Tempest's Wrath. The Battle Wagon moved to tank shock both units of Assault Marines but a VERY lucky Death or Glory attack from a Meltagun in the first unit blew it up before it could reach the second one, and the unit made all 7 of their armor saves against the Deff Rolla attacks! The same unit also took several more shots from Plasma Cannons and only suffered light casualties that brought them down to 2 models and a Sanguinary Priest. My empty Razorback, my Vindicator and my front Rhino were not so lucky though, as the assault from two squads of Boyz wrecked all three of them, forcing an emergency disembarkation that killed several of my Grey Hunters.

End turn 2: Score 5-4

Turn 3:
On our turn the Death Company disembarked and moved toward the two squads of Boyz in the center of the board while the small unit of Assault Marines and the Grey Hunters forced to disembark earlier moved in on the Storm Boyz. I keep kicking myself over this but I forgot to fire with my Long Fangs this turn, which could have won the game. I intended to fire at the Trukks out in the open with no cover, which would have netted us a kill point and prevented what happens in the final turn.....Anyway the large unit of Assault marines moved in on the Vet's Chimera advancing around our right flank and blew it apart with Meltaguns killing everyone inside except for the 3 Meltaguns. The Lascannon on my remaining Razorback whiffed again (surprise surprise), but an excellent round of shooting saw most of the Storm Boyz dead. The Assault Marines in front of them finished the job but lost the Sanguinary priest in the process to the Power Klaw. The Death Company unsurprisingly ripped through 24 Boyz in a single assault and the large Assault Squad killed off the 3 Meltaguns before consolodating to the last unit of Boyz in their Trukk.

On their turn they moved the stranded unit of Boyz into assault range of the small unit of Assault Marines, and a round of shooting from nearby Chimeras left the sergeant with his power fist as the last man standing. Fortunately a pair of templates from the Executioner only killed one of my Grey Hunters and the Vanquisher missed. One Trukk moved around to where the large unit of Assault Marines was advancing and disembarked for an assault. The Assault Phase saw the small unit of Assault Marines wiped out and an unimpressive round of rolling from the large unit left them dead in the water with a drawn combat.

End of turn 3: Score 10-6

Turn 4:
We opened our turn by moving the Grey Hunters up to the Executioner and Vanquisher sitting side by side, neither of which had moved the previous turn, and the pack in the Razorback moved forward to claim an objective and popped smoke. The Death Company moved toward one of two Trukks that were sitting near one of our objectives poised to contest on the last turn. A Lascannon shot from the Land Raider stunned the Vanquisher and the Heavy Bolter fired at the unit of Boyz sitting out in the open causing a couple of casualties. My Long Fangs decided to split their fire on the Trukk the Death Company could not reach, and the Chimera advancing on our other objective. Stopping either one from moving would give us a victory, but I rolled thre 2's and a 1 to hit! Resorting to last ditch efforts I fired a pair of Bolters from the pack of Grey Hunters inside their transport (I didn't disembark them because I figures the Long Fangs would be able to handle it, but in hindsight I should have disembarked for a double tap on that Trukk). In the Assault Phase the Death Company popped their Trukk but the Grey Hunters that charged the Leman Russ tanks managed to stun the Vanquisher again with 4 Krak Grenades and roll two 2's and a 1 on the Executioner with a Power Fist, causing no damage. The Asault Marines in combat did no better than they had last round and were stuck unable to contest the nearby objective.

On our opponents turn they moved the remaining Trukk and the Chimera forward to contest our objectives. The remaining few Boyz jumped into combat with my Grey Hunters and their Rune Priest, but lost half of their unit before killing two of my Grey Hunters with a Power Klaw (who chose to throw Krak Grenades on the tank they were still in base contact with, but failed to do anything), and the poor rolls continued with the Assault Marines on the other side of the board. The Boyz finally wiped them out in combat netting another two kill points.

End of turn 4: Score 11-14

Overall thoughts
Had any number of things gone right in our last game we would have gotten 2nd place, but poor rolling, a bad decision not to disembark, forgetting to fire my Long Fangs and some excellent cover saves by our opponents dug us pretty deep into a hole we just could not climb out of. They were a lot faster than we were and kept us contained in a quarter of the board, and even still we ALMOST fought out way out. If even a single missile had gotten through on either the Trukk or the Chimera that contested (instead of whiffing or forgetting to fire!!) and wrecked it, we would have gotten another kill point and a secure objective for a 15-14 victory instead of the loss. That said our opponents played a brilliant game and I salute them for beating us fair and square. I'm just glad we made them work for it! Congratz to team Shoota Boyz on your 2n'd place victory! The team that won was Dave and Buster playing a pair of ridiculously nasty Chaos lists with a perfect 3-0-0 record. Congratz to them as well for the win!

If anyone else was there at the tournament feel free to chime in with your own reports in this thread!

The teams that played in the tournament that I saw were:

Theoretical Warscythe - Space Wolves/Blood Angels
Blood Wolves - Space Wolves/Blood Angels
Unknown Name - Space Wolves/Blood Angels (the Blood Angels player won the prize for best painted army with a beautiful Flesh Tearers force)
Hive Fleet BA - Orks/Tyranids
Shoota Boyz - Orks/Imperial Guard (2nd place)
Dave and Buster - Chaos/Chaos (1st place)
Unknown Name - Imperial Guard/Imperial Guard
Unknown Name - Tyranids/Tyranids?
Unknown Name - Chaos/Blood Angels
Unknown Name - unknown/unknown
Unknown Name - unknown/unknown
Unknown Name - unknown/unknown

I know there were 12 teams but I don't recall every team name nor do I know the armies everyone played, so if anyone can fill in the blanks please give me a hand! I was really surprised to see two other teams fielding Space Wolves and Blood Angels but we signed up first!! One of them did a dual Land Raider list and the other did Loganwing/Mech Blood Angels, but I'm not sure where they placed or what their records were.

Thanks for reading!

We play at Game Empire every Thursday just about so any time you care to come down for a game just PM me and Id be happy to play. As a side note my buddy and I are going to play in the Santa Monica tournament in January as well, put on by the same folks. We might be....shall we say.....mixing up the lists a bit though.

Nice, I will do my best to attend that tournament. I work about 3-4 miles from where it is taking place actually, lol.

Unfortunately, its unlikely I could ever make it down to San Diego on a Thursday, as I work till 6 and have to get up at 5:30 to make it to work, haha.
I am planning on playing at the Pasadena Game Empire Tournaments, likely starting next month (it would have been this month, tomorrow, but I have a wedding to go to). So if you ever feel like making the trip up here one Saturday, let me know!

San Diego

I generally have Saturdays off so that may be a possibility. I have some obligations the next couple of weeks but after that I might be free for a drive and some gaming.
