Hey dakkaites. I collect just about every army, but it seems to me you're not cool unless you come up with a convincing space marine chapter
However i'm completely stumped when i get to the question of "who's your daddy?"

I want to come up with some decently worthwhile space marine fluff, but i'm wondering which road to take
I was thinking of ultramarines but eh, too easy don't you think? Or is that precisely the open-endedness i'm looking for??
I Space Wolves seems like something cool to go on, but when creating a new chapter it seems.. unfeasible? Ha, maybe someone tried to 'water down' the wulfen seed?
Salamanders seems like a cool option, since their successors seem mysterious and all. plus on the whole they're pretty cool to your common man
I would like to mention every other loyalist chapter but for the sake of tl:dr to hell with that

I had this idea of using some sculpted shoulder pads from another chapter and painting differently / adding greenstuff to make it more unique. Maybe that narrows the scope for ya

Not all of the Chapters know from where they were created, there's also the 13th or dark founding that gives you a lot of options. Basically, do what you want

THE DARK FOUNDING

Not all the foundings of Space Marine Chapters are recorded in exact detail. However, the Adeptus Terra maintains a single bank of original gene-seed from every single Chapter ever created since the Horus Heresy. There is one notable exception: the Thirteenth Founding, also known as the Dark Founding. No-one knows how many Chapters were created by the Dark Founding or what became of them. Perhaps the secret lies in some deep vault in the record office of the Adeptus Terra. Maybe the Space Marines of the Dark Founding are still out there somewhere, waiting to return to the world that created them.

I kinda had some names, but tbh i don't know what to do with them
like Scorpions Sanguine, Gorehounds, Exalted of Ultramar
seem pretty easily tied to a codex..
I guess i'm just trying to avoid the "been there done that" factor
As far as to what founding. the 13th and 21st "cursed" foundings seem the most characterful.
I'll read some of what's already here to get an idea of what other people have done, and come back to this

Theres tons of other chapters look in the galleries of dakkadakka and you will find alot of ideas.

You could just do a chapter that is completly normal and has had a previously unremarkable battle record. They are as codex as their limitations allow and are formed from Ultramarines geneseed.
They hve no great hate or love for any particular faction and favour no particular tactic over another.
They also have the standard 10 companies organisaton as well as the standard numbers that comes with it.
They haven't formed any friendships or rivalries with any other chapters.
They just are.

Anyway. simplicity is the best in most chapters. The most basic chapter I have ever made was the Sword Templars and the Storm Knights.

I mean properly simple as in completly and utterly bog standard.

Hahaha, considering i was tossing about a bunch of names and i really couldn't decide... Maybe doing more than one would be cool. I like the idea of being so unremarkable that nobody even gives a care about you

Now to come up with something unassuming!
I would also like to do something a bit more heroic, but not so mary sue that my chapter master has single handedly pwned every xenos HQ choice you can name. Realistically you just can't pit your chapter master against bloodthirsters swarmlords and avatars (not unless your name is Marneus 'Epic Pwnage' Calgar)

I like the idea of watering down some normally deviant geneseed. like blood angels or space wolves. Will fluff nazis tear me a new poopchute for this?

Traditionally SW don't have successor chapters but BA do.

Nothing stopping you doing a space wolf great company though that takes its own colour-scheme and symbols.

Yeah, but my reasoning being that SW could have been toned down in deviancy with someone else's genetic influence. Perhaps used by forces of the inquisition (as i sometimes read that there are a few chapters tied to inquisitional service)

BA would be pretty cut and paste to make a successor to I think
