I normaly play Nids, but because its such a good deal i picked up the Assault on Black Reach set. To break up the monotony of painting bugs, I decided to work on the space marines in the box. Here is a WIP picture of the Space Marine Captain painted in Crimson Fist colors. Lemme know what you guys think!

The red? real nice. The Yellow on that PW? Too thick and choppy man!

When you're painting pale colours like white and yellow, you need to be patient. This is one thing I've found to my own detriment. Yes it looks kinda crappy after one coat, but let that coat fully dry before adding another. It will take a while, but several, smooth thin coats will soon mount up and the look with be vastly better.

I agree with you, the power weapon is kinda blah. I was trying to transition from a bright yellow to white, and while I think the transition from te yellow to white looks OK, it is too thick and blob-like. This was my first attempt at blending like this, and to be honest, I had no clue what I was doing.

Thats actualy one of the reasons I posted the side pic like that, if anyone has any advice, or could provide me with some tutorials on how to achieve the desired affect, I would be most grateful.

After reading the Crimson Fist fluff and whatnot, it seems like for the most part company colors went out the window after the Fists had their chapter almost completely wiped out, but before that they followed the Index almost to the letter. I decided my army would be a representation of the Fists before the crap hit the fan. I am going to be painting the power weapons in the army, the color of the different companies (ex. This captain is in the 2nd company so his weapon is yellow), so I will have alot of power weapon blending in my future of various colors.

I also have a terminator seargent from the first company that has a power weapon. If I was to stick with my power weapon theme, then his weapon would be white. I dont see how this is going to work, so does anyone have any ideas on what color my first companies weapons could be?

Dude I think the blending is top. My top tip would simply be to take your time, and apply thin, watered coats of paint. Build the effect up over time, and don't add another layer until the one underneath is dry.

The blending on the sword is nice, but you should really paint it in green instead of yellow. Green is the complimentary color for red, and having all three primary colors on a mini is always kind of lame looking. Other than that this is a really nice mini.

Looks real good!!! But I agree with the painting of the yellow, I need to work on that as well.

The armor highlights are a tad stark for my tastes, but I think the cloth is great. The face feels a little flat to me, though. A subtle wash would do wonders to highlight the contours. Since the sword has been discussed sufficiently, I think that about covers my critique.

A bit of room for improvement, but a solid paintjob, overall. Thanks for sharing!

very purty

Very nice job overall. I think I would have opted for a slightly darker blue for the armor highlights, and the face could use a dilute sepia wash or similar to give it some depth... but all things considered a very nice paint job.
