Hi guys I've recently finished a Fantasy army and am choosing a 40K one at the moment. I know I want to do a Space Marine army simply because there is a huge selection and there fairly simple to play . I've narrowed my options down to Imperial Fists and White Scars. Before anyone says so I've chosen these colours because they're difficult and if I do them properly they will look fantastic. I am a painter rather than a play, I detest playing with plain plastic and love spending time on my miniatures. At the moment I'm edging towards Imperial Fists but any pointers are welcome so fire away.

Go with the Imperial Fists they have much better fluff and IMO look 1000x better on the table top than a White Scars army.

Hmm, cant say i've ever heard of someone choosing an army based on it colour scheme, or its painting difficulty. Well; I can attest to how hard (for me at least) it was to finish my White Scars. White, IMHO, is one the hardest colours to work with and maintain its consistancy. I admit im only an OK painter but i've heard from others their frustrations with that colour.

Imperial fists! Best fluff and, although you prefer painting, have the best SC (lysander) in the SM codex IMO.

JB: I like the concept of a free Shrike roaming through the treetops of the jungle. I'm not sure that I like the idea of a real Shrike sitting on my couch eating my Skittles.
corpsesarefun: Thank god I missed be nice to shrike day.
greenskin lynn: because of all the skittles and soda, you basically live off sugar water, like some sort of freakish human-hummingbird hybrid.

If you're just going with vanilla marines then you are free to make up your own color scheme. I knew a guy who made his marine markings orange with black tiger stripes and they looked fantastic. Have you seen the last pages on (I believe) the 3rd edition codex? There were a ton of different chapters represented. If you really love painting then you should use your own ideas. If you need to see what something would look like before you paint it there is a program/board that allows you to "paint your marine" virtually. I don't remember where you can find it but I'm sure someone else can chime in with the answer to that question.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

Fists. White scars = bland Hun Reference Even though they are called khans. Even though literally they have a mix of both hun and khan....

Both the Fists and the Scars can be challenging painting projects, especially if you choose to add battle damage. A light color tends to be very challenging to do, especially for that. I would think more about the "chapter trappings" to make your decision. Do you want to model the feral totems and trinkets of the White Scars, or would you prefer to go with the "standard" Gothic trappings of the Imperial Fists? The White Scars, in my own opinion, require more modeling.

On the other hand, if you wanted a painting challenge, you could look at a quartered scheme, like the Howling Griffons. They are also red and yellow (yellow being a challenging color to do well), so they might flex your painting muscles a bit more.

I used the word 'challenging' too many times. Change it to "hard" or "difficult" so that I don't sound quite as dense.

I would say fists. One, they have much better fluff, and if you want something difficult to paint, I find yellow is more difficult then white(call me crazy). I am painting a white army which is a Fist successor chapter.

Go Imperial Fists. The model for Lysander is so much cooler than the model for Korsarro Khan.

Or you could just... y'know... prime white, making them one of the easiest colour schemes.

Yellow (and red) ceased to be hard once the Citadel Foundation Paints came out. White never was, unless you were crazy enough to prime black first.

Iron Warriors - 4000 points (non-inflated, full FOC)
Black Crusade - 1500 points (non-inflated, led by Abaddon)

I think fists because iv seen some yellow and black that is great, the yellow painting being hard isn't a problem for me and I'll upload guide and painting when the first are done

People naysaying the difficulty of painting white: I am painting a Dark Angels army, which means Deathwing. And even though I prime them white (only time I do) it is still difficult to paint white and get it looking really good.
That aside, I think Imperial fists are the better choice of the two. I saw one painted really well, and it looked really awesome. Saw White Scars painted, just not the same luster.

No Imperial Fists just look great if done properly plus i think it would be great to have an army of yellow coloured space marines plus i think yellow and black go well together

My friend has white tau, and even primed white from what he's described it's no walk in the park. Though most people probably think white is simple anyway.

I put it as a response to the naysayers, as well as overlooking that your thought of Imperial Fists was final. Good luck and can't wait to see them eventually.

I like the imperial fists. Although, personally i dont like the fluff of either...I think the idea of personal castigation is dumb and I dont know much about the White scars, but ive never been capitvated all that much by the ' Tom Cruise Last Samurai' look.

By Terra- those termies better have TH/SS, or so help me I will scream...

Don't particularly like the fluff for either- A biker gang or a load of what are basically ultramrines that are not easily scared. I only did Imperial fists coz' Lysander is epic. Raven guard have the best fluff, though IMO.
