is it viable to have a night lords army if you dont use the bat heads exept for like CSM chosen? i think they look kinda wierd and its a little spendy for just some bat wings.

I don't know what you mean by "viable." Fluff-wise, it's fine to do--thanks to Aaron Dembski-Bowden. I personally think wing-less NL are ridiculous. But I understand it can be expensive.

My plog has some discussion on the subject:

You could try modeling very small wings, or just points on the helmet. you might end with an army of batmans though.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

Of course its viable as it's your army.

Personally I think its preferable as the bat wings look utterly ridiculous. Nothing says utter terror like having a helmet that flaps!

I was contemplating a night lords army and using some of the skull helmets from I think its the possessed kit and the chaos warriors from fantasy. Much more intimidating and with added grimdark.

paint little wings on the helm...if you can wing it! lol
Sculpt some in Green
Or say screw that and don't bother. As long as you use the colour scheme I wouldn't break your balls over it. Not everyone has an inordinate amount of money to waste on little army men

Yes of course, a lot of people find giant head-appendages to look ridiculous (especially when you consider heads are generally over-scaled anyway).

You could call them The Dark Knights of Chaos.

Peter: As we all know, Christmas is that mystical time of year when the ghost of Jesus rises from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living! So we all sing Christmas Carols to lull him back to sleep.
Bob: Outrageous, How dare he say such blasphemy. I've got to do something.
Man #1: Bob, there's nothing you can do.
Bob: Well, I guess I'll just have to develop a sense of humor.

Blue, grey, and yellow colour scheme? I like that idea. Raptors would have to have Possessed Wings though. Or perhaps capes and grappling guns.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

I wrote a couple of little stories about head appendages some time ago on another forum, here they are again for anyone who is interested:

The enemy were out there somewhere, he knew it. "Gunnery sergeant, any sight of the enemy?" Said Major Tom. "Nope sorry sir they're clearly using those ruins ahead for cover, cant get a bead on them sir!"
"Ah! Wait a moment sir!" said the Gunnery Sergeant. "There, I can see what looks to be a giant pair of wings bobbing along behind that crater!"
"Excellent! Good work Gunnery Sergeant, aim for those wings! Range 100m. No wind. Fire!"
The guns fired, followed by an explosion.
"Great! Target destroyed! Thank goodness those marines wear those helmets!" said Major Tom, before brushing some dust from his lapel.

Drax the Despoiler was a vision of hell. Clad head to toe in deep red armour, brass ornamental skulls and the skinned and melted faces of foes who had dared to cross him. In his hand he carried a giant chain axe, the size of a small child, its metal surface covered in gore. His other hand carried an ornamental plasma pistol, forged when the Emporer himself bestrode the galaxy. For ten thousand years Drax had fought the lackies of the Emporer, killing them without mercy and taking their skulls as offerings for the Blood Throne. Entire worlds had fallen before him.

This was the site witnessed by Dave the guardsman as he entered the room. Doing what any rational minded person would do when confronted with such a horror, dave dropped his lasgun, turned on the spot and ran.

With a howl of anger, Drax gave chase and ran after dave across the room. However, as he ran out of the door, he forgot that his helmet had giant appendages which caught on the door frame wrenching his head backwards, breaking his neck and killing him instantly.

The Nightlords are easily distinguishable from the red wings, but that just means you can paint their possessed backpack wings red, or red wings on a daemon prince. Their other distinguishing feature is the blue with lightning bolt pattern. You can always just do that. One of my gaming buddies does that, and it looks clearly Nightlord.

...urrrr... I dunno

Don't see why the wings are all that necessary, you'd think they would be terrifying enough without them.

That's how nightlords work. You can never be too scary.

I can only assume they discovered they were too terrifying, and thus need the wings to reduce their terror-producing ability.

I think the helmets still look realy cool, well painted night lords are some of the coolest looking renegades around.

In my garden being molested by an androgynous lamb.

A similar thing came up in my thousand sons army. My way of looking at it is that the special helmet is a battle honour some may not have earnt it yet.

I think the wings look ridiculous. I'd much rather see an army of skull-helms, as someone else above suggested.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.
