I's thinking of buying Assault on Black Reach set for my SM army and to start and ork army. But when i look at it the commander looks like it kinda sucks and the boyz and maybe even the dread. So what I'm wondering is if I should actually get it or not. Opinions would be appreciated !

Probably work

The commander figure isn't that bad. Really the worst part about AoBR is that there are zero upgrades included. What You See Is All You Get. That and I'm not certain if the price difference makes them worthwhile now. You're almost better off seeing if you can find a couple megaforces.

Gets you 3 PLASTIC deffcoptas, the only non FW multi melta gun for dread, 20 boys, couple SMs, couple nobs, some ok termies, the best (imo) looking Warboss and an ok captain. My biggest gripe with the box is the meh looking SMs just because of the 2D look.

If you want bodies its a good way to go. The only problem is there are about zero upgrades, and the poses are pretty bland. The captain is actually really good looking, though he only comes with a bolter and power sword. Even so, it is a good starting point, as they are really easy to expand into full size armies.

If you are just starting out, and need things like templates and a rulebook, AoBR is 100% worth it even at it's current price.

If you are wanting just marines/orks, you may be better off buying those pieces from AoBR on eBay.

Ebay is the way to go, everyone is looking to unload the armies they dont want. It's also the only way to get deffcoptas. I got a set of deffkoptas for 6$ on ebay! The set of 20 boys can go for as little as 10$. AoBR is a great deal but if you appreciate 40K for the painting and look then it's not your thing. A better way to stock up on boys is look for people selling 40 boys as a set. They simply buy 2 battleforces and break up the units. 40 boys with all the upgrades and everything included in the regular box can be found for 60-70$

Totally worth it for the models. If you DON'T have an SM/Ork army, its a good start, add a battlebox and your going places if you DO have an army already, more boyz is always needed, as someone said the only non FW Multimelta dread arm, and they are great for conversions etc.

You also get a mini rulebook and templates! Classic redsticks too!

I paid $70 Cdn. For mine and it was definitely worth it, I don't know how much they are going for now but they are probably still worth it.

The best thing to come from that set though is being able to buy pieces of it off ebay for really cheap. I have made lootas, komandos, THSS termmies, ard boys, and with some extra bits those nob models are useful, all just with the models from that kit bought off ebay.

Edit
Also cheap dreads + cheap dread arms are a lifesaver.

Ok maybe I should buy the SM battleforce AND AoBR. Oh the possibilities GW has given me....

Personally I don't like the set, a battleforce is much better. The plastic kopters are much better than the metal 33$ ones. You can buy plastic kopters from someone else's Black Reach set. (Trust me, if you're gonna play orks, kopters are great.)

I guarantee you'll be mad you spent so much money for nothing.

Buy two tactical squads, two rhinos, a dreadnought and some terminators. Much better.

Get the AOBR if your just getting into the hobby. The rule book and templates are great and if you don't want the orks you can trade or ebay them to offset your costs.

I never realized what you got in that box. I might have to try and get a set. Would give me more for my Salamanders and a good start to that Ork army I wanted to start.

I'd get AoBR, even at its current price. By the sound of it, you already have some Space Marines and want to start Orks, which makes it pretty much perfect for you.

The static poses of the tac marines is the set's biggest weakness, but spreading them around multiple squads of the more poseable multi-part plastic or metal models helps them blend in and disappear.

Extra templates and a scatter dice are always nice, plus the mini rulebook is convenient as hell - gaming gear already overstuffed? This thing literally fits in my pockets.

Even at $90, you get a decent amount of bang for your buck. ALL of the models are useful, either as cheap, bulk troops or as bases/parts for conversion work.

If I had to start all over, knowing what I know now, I'd still start with AoBR, whether it cost $60 or $90.
