I'm looking for a low loader plastic railway wagon with a wheel spacing of about 50mm.
I'm really not sure what scale this is? I have a feeling it may be Gauge 1 (G scale)?
Anyone know?
I doubt anyone knows where I can get one of these real cheap? I will be heavily converting it.
This is what it looks like

This is a topic I've researched a lot and have applied to my tabletop and my armies. The *closest* you'll find to GW "scale" in model railroad scenery is O scale. Everything else is noticeably too big or too small. I have a bunch of O scale stuff in my collection and it looks dead on for scale (and being model train accessories it also looks really good regarding sculpting, detail, etc).
Additionally, if you're looking at model vehicles (like tanks, etc) 1/32 scale is the *closest* but since things have upsized a bit in 40K 1/35 is also feasible in a lot of applications.
Of course there are things that translate if you remove the noticeable items that "scale" them, such as I have an HO scale water tower that (to scale) would be 30' tall, but I removed the ladders and the entry hatch, now it is "to scale" for the rest of my scenery because it doesn't look like it should not fit.
All in all it's an ongoing experiment with what works and what doesn't, but with the information I've offered you should be ahead of where I started out.

I gauge which is equivalent to 1/23nd scale is what you want.
It gives a standard gauge measurement of 45mm. The next one up is II gauge which is 63.5mm.
Once you know the scale you can look for cheap wagons on eBay and so on.

That looks like an 0 Gauge wagon to me (32mm). The next two standard gauges are 45mm and 63.5mm. Sadly at that size a decent wagon to use as a base would be pretty expensive. It would be a lot cheaper to use a 45mm wagon as the base as 63.5 is pretty specialised these days. However since LGB went bust even getting cheap G gauge stuff is tricky.
You might want to seriously look at buying a few axle/wheel sets and axle boxes and scratch building a suitable wagon chassis.

Here is a summary on model railroad scales and gauges:
http://www.nmra.org/beginner/scale.html
Guess the German and US market for model railroads are bigger, with more choices on the resp. ebays ( www.ebay.de and www.ebay.com).
While yours is a European model, you might also want to browse the biggest model railroad store, which is American: http://www.walthers.com/ (a.o. for container trains).
Personally, I am still not convinced that Chaos Dwarfs should have modern railroads though

Best advice I can give is to check out garage sales in neighborhoods with alot of old folks. I have known HELLA 60+ dudes that love model trains....not so much in the younger age groups

Sorry to go OT....
But would IG/Marines have any kind of railway in the 40th century?
I'm trying to think of Diorama ideas....And thought a train track going thought might look cool....(but might be out of place...)

Fluff wise in 40K it's not uncommon to have what would be old or ancient tech (to us 21st century folk) married up with high-fantasy setting equipment. Broadly speaking the Adeptus Mechanicus are very, very loathe to advance and develop technology - deeming that if it was good enough if the Emperor used it ten thousand years ago, it's probably heresy to try to improve on it, so use of railways isn't implausible in M41.
So much knowledge and technoolgy has been lost by the Imperium since the Horus Heresy, including whole worlds and systems cut off due to warp storms. Fluff-wise it's likely many worlds regressed from - or were frozen at - the stage of technological development when isolated from the rest of the Imperium. Some worlds may be just entering a post-industrail stage & using steam engines on Leman Russ chassis, so why not have a rail-mounted plasma cannon or defence laser?
Also bear in mind if something is effective at what it does, why change it? Railways are good for moving large amounts of goods & personnel from point A to B. Sure you could use fancy-schmancy technology to shuffle things around, but it tends to be tempramental (Deep Strike misshaps are never nice), and fluff wise may be exhorbitantly costly in resources, or deemed down right heretical by the cog-boys (Marine Chapters being sort of off to 'one side a bit' in the Empire of Man in 40K).

In the apocalpyse book there is a "train" of some gothic description. But rail transport would be very practical on many 40k wolrds as there is a large gap of tech level between the worlds of the imperium.
Back to the example I mentioned, I beileve they jut counted it as a land raider that can only move along the railway.

There's nothing specifically "low tech" about rail transport. It is a very efficient way of transporting people and cargo.

GW did a great scratchbuilt armoured train for the battle of cold steel ridge, here is the link:
http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?pageMode=multi&categoryId=900006&pIndex=7&aId=6700007&start=8
If you look at the introduction page of this web page in the navigation bar on the left you will see the train comming out of the station.
If its G scale your after try http://www.dragon-gscale.co.uk/ they do some good prices (still a little expensive) Ive used them alot for my garden railway, alternatively search ebay for g scale, lgb, or O scale/guage.

Wow! They are not cheap pieces.
The cheapest way to do it might be to buy two small wagons, rip off the tops and use the bases as bogies on a long wagon scratch built using plastic girder and stuff.

Just try to look in here low loader they have lots of low loader plastic and also they have bodies with lightweight aluminum.
I'm not sure if the value is cheap but its reliable. Hope this will help. Thanks.
