Watching Greatest Tank Battles on Discovery at the moment. Which got me wondering, which 40k tanks can be seen to mirror WW2 tanks?

An example would be what would be a 40k Tiger? Or a Sherman tank?

I think this could be a great topic for discussion. So list the 40k tank and its WW2 equivalent, and of course you reasons.

The usually accepted equivalents for 40K vehicles are:

Land Raider -- British Mark IV (World War 1)
Rhino -- British FV432 (1970s) or US M113 (1960s)
Leman Russ -- British Mark IV
Chimaera -- Soviet BMP (1970s)

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

Keep in mind while badly designed,IOM tanks are made of handiwave materials.

Basically every IG tank or artillery has a very WW2 feel about it IMO.

Nazi Germany themed chaos Baneblade would be terrifying.

Agree with above - Leman Russ also has very similar armament pattern to the M3 Lee/Grant with a turret gun and a big hull gun

As to a Predator being a Tiger, which was a heavily armoured, slow tank with a huge gun, its much more like a light-medium tank (if you count a Russ as a standard issue medim tank) with a fairly good gun. More like a British Sherman Firefly (Sherman with British 17 pounder) or US M36 Jackson tank destroyer (M4, open turret, 90mm AA gun) or German Panzer MkIV with the long 75mm.

Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it

You are right about the Lee/Grant aspect of the Leman Russ. It is also similar to the tank shown in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

If you take the M113 as the basis of the Rhino, the Predator is the Australian fire support M113 which had the turret from the Saracen armoured car mounted on top.

forge world's tank destroyer (with the laser) looks like the german Hetzer aka Jagdpanzer 38(t). Both have limited gun traverse as well but it's role is similar to the Jadgpanther as both are tank destroyers.

The baneblade variants are like the old 'land battleship' soviet T-35... except they aren't rubbish.

I would think a pred is more like a T-34 equivalent

On a related note, I REALLY REALLY wish the GW tanks had some 'track sag' like real tanks. Although the track & wheel arrangement on the GW tanks wouldn't allow for a huge amount, the dead-straight tracks look totally unrealistic and crap imho. I would love to see something more like this:

*EDIT* And while I am having a gripe, the size of the gun fitted to a tank is directly limited by the diameter of the turret mounting ring and imo looks stupid if the gun is too long in relation. Yes, Leman Russ Vanquisher, I'm looking at you!

Daedricbob, don't get too fire up about GW AFV/tank designs- they are chock full of problems. From oversized guns, to lack of workable suspension/clearance, to lack of engines (no room in the rhino), etc. Just look at them as pretty placeholders.
