Hello again Dakka Dakka, it's been a long time since i last posted on here.
anyway i have now come to the conclusion that after several other types of army, i want to start a pre heresy space marine legion.
my problem however is which one.

so that's what i am asking the good posters on Dakka Dakka to help me with. The legions i'm strongly considering are;
The Ultramarines, Luna Wolves, Imperial fists, Emperors Children, The Blood Angels and the Iron Hands

my plan for the army is too possibly use the squad sizes for space marines as seen in Imperial armour IX
and that sort of organisation through out the force

the HQ will be a fully converted Primarch and maybe a couple of captains to go with him and then about 3000points to go with them.

so then I ask. Which legion should i choose ??

thanks in advance

Imperial Fists! People don't seem too interested in creating rules or models for Rogal Dorn, but that makes it more awesome IMO!

This.

Or Luna Wolves, Emperor's Children and Thousand Sons.

Honestly, I don't see the point of making a pre-heresy Loyalist legion. It's all about the Traitors, imo.

Go with a winner!

Pre-Heresy Ultramarines!

Plus, all those excellent and oh so ominous hints about them in THE FIRST HERETIC... how could you not go with them?!?

Thousand Sons...just makes sorcerers/librarian conversions that much cooler.

A lot of people get put off by the number of 'white' PH legions (Luna Wolves, World Eaters, Death Guards, and their predecessors, the Dusk Raiders, White Scars)

Personally like any army, I would say go with the Legion concept that you enjoy the most. Jervis Johnson did a great Standard Bearer article in this months WD (certainly the most worthwhile thing in the mag, especially considering the most obviously set-up bat-rep ever, rant..rant..rant ).

Have you got the book Collected Visions yet? A lot of people, myself included, were inspired by the artwork in that book to start an army.

Finally, please take a look at the blog linked in my sig if you want to do World Eaters and want some ideas.

If you can afford it. Iron hands in mk3 Iron armour. Those would look AMAZING.

The iron hands in MK3 sound so tempting. and it is going to be a lengthy project anyway so the price isn't too much of an issue. the question now is how best to get the iron hand feeling across.

A true scale spacemarine type figure seems like a suitable base for Ferrus, just need ideas for his large metallic arms which are after all a big part what makes him, well... him

Iron hands has a good range of GW conversion packs if you're up for it (especially the Iron Hands Tactical Squad). In addition you can also mix in some Iron Warrior parts if you file down the Chaos Iconography. The Warsmith would make a perfect Iron Father or the basis for Ferrus.

Iron hands cost alot. But I think you should go for the gold and go Dusk Guard, or..... Thousand Sons...... Or Dark Angels.

I'd personally go with Pre Heresy Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus, mainly because of the large amount of character associated with the legion. For extra character, I'd recommend styling the army to be loyalist Luna Wolves/Sons of Horus before they turned traitor. Horus himself would be an easy conversion (SM terminator with Abaddon's lightning claw bit and a plastic CSM power mace bit)

I have the same problem in that the Word Bearers (my Chaos lot) are nerfed in the current codex as they have no Dark Apostle anymore, whereas the SM still have one, so using them "pre hereey" is an option - except that they changed colour and insignia :(

Still, one could probably play the "during" heresy and so capture the changeover.

Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it

I think playing "during the heresy" is the best option although i think the best way of showing a legion is by using the Badab War imperial armour book, purely because the squads are organised into old legion formations.

OR depening on where it is you game or who you game with you could try what me and several friends did, we spent a couple of weeks drafting a set or rules to showcase the legions of the great crusade. introducing cheaper hq's like the centurion in the badab book. which makes for an interesting and unique way of playing.

and thanks to various people i believe that i am likely to start an iron hands army. I have some ideas for Ferrus Manus based around some art scale articles i've seen across various forums. how best to represent his giant metal hands....
But alongside the iron hands will be two squads of Luna Wolves, The Mournival and of course the Big Man Himself. Hell i'm kinda tempted to put Fulgrim in there aswell, my reasoning being Fulgrim's best friend was Manus and I feel they probably met whilst the Emperors Children were attatched to the Luna Wolves.

so in terms of the project outline

Ferrus Manus - His Honour Guard

2 Cohorts of 20 with 2 Centurions to act as line captains

so thats about 53 men

Emperors Children
Fulgrim Himself (conversion ideas would be most welcome)
1 Cohort of Emperors Children led by captain Tarvitz

Luna Wolves
Horus (in artificer armour, lets face it he did wear something other than terminator, hell he didn't have it during the first book)

The Mournival
Honour Guard for Torgaddon, Loken and Aximand

Vipus(centurion/line captain)
Cohort

Another line captain and yet another cohort

and the Justerean Terminators

not sure what else would be worth getting but that should be a good start, as its a lengthy project the size of the army might well be quite big.

I hope to begin at the end of this month one pay day
- okay i've already made head way on Horus, i need my tool box back so i can apply the green stuff and what not. Hopefully I'll have a project Log Started in the next few weeks with some very rough concepts for the 3 primarchs.

Citywidecrayon (please explain your name to me, its giving me nightmares! ) sounds like you have some great ideas there. Have you considered looking at the Tempus Fugitives website? They made some great rules (exhaustively tested) for all periods of the Heresy, from the Crusade, to the heresy itself, and then finally the Scouring. As you can imagine, the rules for each force change quite a lot through that period.

They have some pretty interested rules for the Primarchs (who are insanely powerful, exactly as they should be!) and its well worth the couple of minutes it takes to sign up in order to get such a polished document.

If i should pick a Pre-Heresy army it would be Luna Wolfs! Deffinetly!
What is more awesome to have Horus leading his intire army with his Power Armour? It could only be descriped as EPIC!

my name came about from needing an origonal xbox gamertag, i tried my name, and well... citywidecrayon came up as a random suggestion and its pretty much stuck since

Have you considered looking at the Tempus Fugitives website?

i had tried this, unfortunately enough though they have taken down all of the Age of the Emperor packs. if somebody on this forum has a copy i would be most appreciative if they were to send me those packs

as for the rules for the primarchs i was basing everything off of what i'd read and off of a pdf called codex primarch, its fairly good. The stats for the Primarch's are certainly game changing without being so broken as to only be worth using in apocolypse.

If i should pick a Pre-Heresy army it would be Luna Wolfs! Deffinetly!

The onyl thing more epic than the warmaster in his power armour leading the Luna Wolves into battle ? Horus in his terminator armour sounding the charge as 10,000 marines bellow the word LUPERCALL as one. I think it is fair to say that the Horus Heresy and the Great Crusade bring forth such epic images.

word beaerers are an easy scheme and have a lot of room for adding character to the army. But then again there's just something about that scheme which doesn't appeal to me.
