Ok so i know plenty of people pin stuff to reinforce joints and stuff however i plan to use pinning so i can easily build and debuild one of my models for transport purposes.

But one thing confuses me, how do you make it so that the pin matches up evenly with both pieces?? I know the 1st part can be a simple drill and pin, but how do you get the 2nd area to drill for the pin???

Old tip for this one. Decide where you want to drill on one part, then mark it with a spot of paint and put the parts together before it dries. Now you have a spot on each part in the right place to drill and for the holes to match up.

Such a simple solution once again overlooked >.<.

Also, use 15 or 30 minute epoxy instead of superglue for pinning - it gives you a bit of leeway to adjust the exact position before it cures completely.

the use of pinning for a disassembleable model is fine however with micro neodinium magnets available really cheaply on the interwebs I don't see the point? you can insert a magnet into each side of the join and the magnetic attraction will hold it in place for bigger heavier parts use a larger stronger magnet? but if your set on pinning the paint drop technique is the one I have used but be carefull that your angle and direction of drilling is constant otherwise your piece of wire won't line up properly.

Since you want to remove the part in question. You should use two pinns per peice you want held on, this will stop the peice from spinning in place.

Incase people are wondering the following link shows the model im planning on pinning:

http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440322a&prodId=prod970005a

However i may magnetise it as i plan to magnetise some of my other chaos stuff. The problem is finding appropriate sized and strength magnets to withstand the weight.
I plan on magnetising the wings.

Dude, I have got you covered like a jimmy hat!!!!! Check out my ongoing blog building a fully magnetized chaos lord. We're talking neck, shoulders, elbows, waist, backpack, and feet all have mag'd joints. Oh, and the base is goign to utilize magnetized terrain.

SHAMELESS self promotion mang! But seriously....its easier than pinning plus it makes picking up tiny parts really easy.

Found some magnets at http://www.powermagnetstore.com/index.html

but sadly the block ones seem to be too big for my intended use and the circle ones will be awkward to put on considering the "joints" for the bloodthirster are square.

Did you say you needed a place to source some really strong magnets shaped like a borg ship? Or a globe? Or maybe a pyramid.

Personally I like teeny discs, but variety is the spice of life!

They pretty cheap too.

With the BloodThirster.. you are better off permently attaching those wings. They are all metal and the connection between body and wing is not so large an area.

Thats the problem though, if i glue them on then it will easily break, so the magnet/pins will act as a way to remove it and replace it at will. Im guessing the multi-pin is the way to go though.
I have the exact same model on my shelf which i dont want to risk transporting as it took me ages to get the wings to stay on, that and the fact i made a sub-par job of the base and flaws are easily seen in it.

Get tiny square magnets, build a frame, then use a small stack of mags as a "pin". You can also make an alignment dowel pretty easy. As strong as each magnet is, they are stronger when you have many of them in a small area with aligned charges.

But if you pin those wings when you attach them permently.. unless it suffers a fall from a distance or a serious hit, it should stay together.

Hmm if i understand you correctly you mean to build an arrangement of magnets like this?? [] is one magnet

Gimmie a sec to take a pic and upload it. Hopefully I can clarify...all I have are discs though.

You'll need a bunch of GS, and depending on how long you want your "pin" to be you will need fewer or greater numbers of magnets. YOu can use water, although I prefer baby oil because I don't hvae to keep adding more as it dries.

Start off with a base, I used WFB, but the deeper you want your sockets, the larger you'll want your base.

A. Make a ball of GS, dump some water or oil on a pane of glass. Smoosh the ball lightly against the base, flip it upside down and hold it by the base itself. Push very lightly against the wet/oiled surface. Once you have a flat surface and the GS wad is as tall as you want your sockets to be deep, turn it rightside up. Now take magnet stacks that have been rubbed lightly with baby oil and shove em all the way down in the GS wad. DO NOT LET THEM BE COVERED. Let it cure and then pull out the magnets. They will come out easily.

B. Repeat the GS ball on a base deal. Oil both it and the cured mold from step A. Smoosh em together. Let it cure.

Presto, you can now make multiple sockets and dowels!!! You can take a stack of magnets, drop a tiny bit of superglue on one, then use the stack to push it into a socket. Press firmly for 10 seconds and pull the stack out. You now have a magnetized socket that you can easily trim down for whatever use you want.

John, I'm sorry, I didn't read your original post properly.

I think you need to be very wary about attempting to do this kind of model as something that can be torn down.

The same model in plastic would be a challenge, but in white metal, it's really going to take some doing.

To be honest, I think you'll need more than your standard bit-of-a-paperclip pin, more like some fairly thick brass rod and I don't think magnets are going to accomplish very much.

I'm not saying it can't be done, but the very fact that you were asking about basic technique makes me wonder if this might be a bit of a stretch right now, especially as it's not a $5 model.

Yea i know it will require some work to get the results i want im im willing to put in that work .
Af the magnetic strength is stronger than the wieght of the wings then im sure they will be able to hold them in place.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Managed to find out the pulling power of the magnets im looking at, they have about 2-4lb pulling power, that should easily hold up the weight of the wings.
Now just to get the size of the wing joint, sadly that will have to wait till 25th december >.<, the bloodthirster has already been wrapped.
