Photobucket album of this and other work: http://s1130.photobucket.com/albums/m526/Adam_Groszkiewicz/Chaos%20lord%20bitz%20raid/
Stuff used.
Lots of bitz from lots of kitz.
GW plastic snips
GW needle files
Galeforce 9 modeling scalpel
Galeforce 9 greenstuff
Maxi-cure super glue
Whole bunch of #11 xacto blades
Magnets were ordered from http://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/p-23-nsn0591.aspx
This model is sturdy enough to be tossed underhand against a wall with absolutely no damage.
I need to say that this project has made me a die hard believer in the GW plastic snips. They are absolutely amazing, and you can get suprisingly precise cuts on plastic, GS, and even pewter (although I only did this on one head, don't want to dull them). A machined flat cutting edge is amazingly useful, plus it will literally save your fingers.
I'd like to credit Lamenter with the original inspiration for this project. His work is amazing. Please check out his site if you want to be floored by some insane conversions.
http://masteroftheforge.com/
His first true scale chaos marines. Be clear, these are NOT my work just the inspiration for the project.

I'll take that as a challenge! The hard part on this guy is going to be the leg area. I don't have anything suitable so I may try building a chaos centaurish (insectoid, not equine) or perhaps a chaos portal puking him out.

hi agroszkiewicz
whoa, read your pm then read through your guide. well i will shortly vote for the last option, nuts seriously nuts^^ in a very meaningful way , a good meaningful way at that.
are you some organizing genius? they are a rare seed ... me i´m totaly the oposite...choas all over. i can learn a lot about work in conversions by following your thread. i will keep in close contact you can bet^^.
the first thought i had was genie from a bottle... well then you added the nidparts like the talons and stuff iand your idea i could better understand...
the first used head is not my favorite, but don´t take that to seriously. i think it will be the best fitting for your sculpt. it reminds me of
the red one obviously... not the young tom cruise, the older one...
your tutorial is relly good written and with some good sense of humor thrown in between. a very good mix between entertainment and information. who could ask for more?
as about your request to me in your pm. do you have a paintscheme in mind? well since i´m not that into choas for modeling, always think i´m not that good with so mucvh fleshy things to paint... but i suggest you stick to a more redish theme with the bodeparts...just as shown in my reference pic... also for thos technical parts. well have you considered that glow effect some peoplle create for their plasma weapons or the one on that famous cat and mouceplay model with the genestealer and the guard? it was in one of the sm codecies...3rd edition perhaps?
its rather difficult and i really want to help you with some ideas, it s just that i think your doing such a great job by yourself that i don´t have something useful to come up with^^...
on a side note, do you have a carpenter background? your technique with the cutting and glueing and making joints semms a bit from that direction... ic ould be wrong and that your a natural after all^^
cheers man, best wishes and do not shed some blood for the blood god, insted let others bleed^^

Wow, that's some neat-looking work there, Bro'!
My 5 cents, that dreadnought-foot doesn't fit in... It just doesn't catch the eye like the rest of the miniature does.
On the other hand, all the arms, heads and so forth have come out just GREAT!
- I especailly love the backpacks, and the arm holding the book!
@Viktor von Domm
Bro', you just hit the spot with that Legend-post! It indeed looks like him - the Devil!
@agroszkiewicz
Hey, dude, would it be possible to add some kind of hoovy-feet instead of that Dreadnought base?

Thats actually the character that inspired this project, so I hit the nail on the head!
I don't have a background in carpentry, but I do have a background as an automotive technician. Also did alot of aftermarket work on cars, so liberal use of CNC parts was commong. I think thats where I got the general idea of cutting like that. Thanks for the props on technique.

I'll never take constructive criticism as a flame. Thanks for the concern though...mighty sweet of you pookums. I totally agree about the foot thing and to a lesser degree the entire lower body. I did some research earlier and it looks like the WFB Minataur body has the proper proportions, and there are several hooved options in that kit.
Le sigh, I was hoping to build this model without spending a dime. Now I've got an itch to go to the store and its 2:45 AM.

Since you asked so nicely, I'll weigh in.
Fix the link to your magnet supplier. You included the final period in the link itself, so it won't go through smoothly. Easy enough to look at the url and figure out that you need to delete a single punctuation mark, but people are frequently lazy. Make it easy for them. Also, a bit more info about the grade and size of magnet you used and how well it holds wouldn't hurt (plastic is much lighter than metal, but long bits can still rotate undesirably without falling off, if there isn't sufficient hold). Magnet selection is a more common topic of questions than "how do I stick these on?"
Actually, that's about all I'd change/add, so far. It's an interesting project, to be sure. Most people magnetize weapon options, if anything, but you've made an entire model and decorative base that can be swapped around on a whim. From a random pile of bitz, no less.
The one thing I can see potentially hampering the badassery of the final model is that the base can't really be embellished further without disrupting the magnetization points for the debris/model. Grit or flock would need to be kept out of the footprint of each item to keep that flush mounting surface, leaving lots of bare patches that would be hard to disguise with mere paint. When it come time to paint, are you just going to give the base a flat coat of paint? Something to think about.
All in all, a nice little guide for a unique and rather ambitious project. I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes. Keep it up!

Excellent point. The original post has been modified to include a direct link to the magnets ordered. The guide was written with the intent that someone who has never magnetized a model can learn some easy peasy techniques.
oadie wrote:The one thing I can see potentially hampering the badassery of the final model is that the base can't really be embellished further without disrupting the magnetization points for the debris/model. Obviously the WFB base pictured was just an exercise in practicing how to mag up a base...its too chopped up to be useful from a modeling perspective. One thing that has me really excited is the utter and complete freedom that this project will allow when it comes to designing terrain for the bases.
I'm definently going to put some serious thought into this issue today since you are right. It has the potential to really disrupt the flow of the model. Gotta think ahead!
In other news, the leg area was torn off for future use as part of a chaos spawn or something. Gonna succumb to the cheeseball factor and build some hooves, maybe a snake type base, or maybe ever try my hand at building a mount! Expect further updates as the day progresses.
The magnets are pretty strong, I could turn the full assembled diorama upside down and shake it without parts falling off. Any really large or heavy parts are going to get more than one magnet put on the bottom, sort of like magnetized pinning.... Also one thing to remember is that this model has so many magnets in it and they are all places with the charges facing identially. The individual strength of the magnets is MAGnified when you have lots of them close together even if they are not actually touching. The torso, arms, head, and backpack assembly has 8 of these magnets, plus whatever you use in the leg area and base. Trust me, if built properly it will stand up to more motion and inertia than you'd think.
I'd also like to thank everyone who has contributed comments and criticism so far. Almost of my ideas originally start with the input that others give me, as well as looking at the modeling and painting of others on this site! Further updates will not be posted in the tutorial section unless it covers the construction of terrain or body peices from the bitz box.

Here are a couple of pics I took while fitting another backpack. The clearances will fit terminator legs and anything proportionally similar. REALLY opening up options with this kit now. Gonna get insane later on!
The backpacks honestly need an aligning pin, which I'd need a hobby drill to install. :/
The evening update will be posted later and includes a mini-guide on how to turn your terminator legs into power armor legs following Lamenter's technique from http://masteroftheforge.com/2010/08/08/tutorial-actual-scale-space-marine/
Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok, the true scale leg guide is going to have to be a seperate thread. Ended up getting alot of really good pics, so y'know. On the plus side it means that I can just update this thread with the best pics!
I've decided that I want this to be a model built to withstand regular gaming. To whit, it will have sculpted weaponry and backpacks for the following options.
Abbadon the Despoiler
Fabius Bile
Huron Blackheart
Typhus
Kharn the Betrayer
Ahriman
Lucius the Eternal
Chaos Lord (scaled big enough to represent power OR terminator armor)
Chaos Sorceror
Obliterator
Daemon Prince will be added to that list eventually, thats going to take ALOT of work on additional legs, and god only knows what else.
Got some more legs and assorted bitz to help restock...gone through a ton of parts over the last few days.
Checking to make sure I've scaled the legs properly. Yep, looks correct to me!
To glue the magnets to the feet stack 2 magnets into the base, then apply a TINY amount of super glue to each foot, and hold it against the magnets for 15 seconds and remove the magnet that is left in the hole.
And a shot of the base assembly before I set things aside for GS to cure. I'm liking where this is going!

Umm, so yeah. This is literally my second ever project involving GS.....its really easy to learn how to work....I have never had an artistic bone in my body. Keep it REALLY wet while working it and don't let it get warm.
MOVING RIGHT ALONG....cue up "Baby" by Major Lazer featuring Prince Zimboo (Diplo auto-tuned a baby crying, then put a Jamaican rap over it, its amazing)
I true scaled some legs from the Chaos Terminator Lord kit. Won't cover that here, but I'll put up a pic. Not amazing GS work, but its enough to get the job done.
Using the GW triangle file, cut your waist area for a rough fit.
Next, use the square file to give a nice polish to it...probably not needed, but its fun for me. The right angle cut on the buckle was done with the triangular file, then finished with the square. Its to help alignment of this centerpeice when it cures.
Next, take a ball of GS and smoosh it between the two parts. This was a very very lengthy process that literally involved just making a ball, squishing, cutting the crud, repeat....maybe 4 times. Keep the GS wet like your woman while you doin this....otherwise it stretches and you have to start over.
CAREFULLY remove the GS from the magnetized socket. Not as hard as it seems, not by far.
Parts are curing, prolly going to spend a while making weapons and assorted random bits of flotsam from the warp. Still haven't figured out to do about the flocking, but not worried!
Isn't there some rule about models are supposed to be mostly GW parts? Does this count?

Worked alot with GS tonight. Model still needs work on the pose, and honestly I think the terminator legs are proportionally off to some of the arms...nothing that can't be fixed pretty easily. Figured out how to make a fitted socket with the GS. In the future this will save me from making crazy time consuming cuts with the files. It will also allow me to do assembly line construction.
Not perfect yet, but really coming together in a good way. Shown with a very Nurgleish set of equipment.

One thing worth mentioning about magnets are; Keeping the magnets clear of GS etc. will help the parts stay in that exactly one place "meant" for that part. Having them too covered by GS, or what-not, i have found, can result in the limbs, not falling off, but not staying in PLACE.
Furthermore, i've found that (with wet hands ofc.), adding a little glue to the GS before inserting the magnet works like a charm.
About the base:
- As oadie so gentleman-like put it, having the magnets too visible on the finished models base might ruin it abit. And i agree! But a solution to this, if having too many magnets on the base, in order for making it as custom as custom can be (which is a fine touch IMO), decorating it with, say, tall grass could cover it up abit. Alternatively, having enough parts could also do the job just fine. But an over-decorated base can also be a pain the the eye, if you ask me (which you of course do - right? ).
But anyways, i love what you've done so far. You are a highly creative brainy-man, and that's just calls for little hearts - like this: <3
- And then some! Also worth mentioning, the first time doing the GS, you've gotten some nice results!
GS can be tricky to work with, and indeed does require alot of both PATIENCE and PRACTICE. But the most important tip i've gotten so far is keeping everything that touches the GS wet, so the GS don't stick. I've even gone as far as licking my fingers to smoothen it out. I hate to leave fingerprints, as it becomes visible on the finished miniature!
Anyways, rounded up, i love your creativity, and being highly inspirative, only one thing to say; Keep it up, and keep the arms and legs magnetized! <3

 TY Bill!
Making sure that the magnets will hold on the heaviest of completed parts....IE the modified cloak from the Chaos Termie Lord kid. Backpack area still needs some kind of alignment pin to keep from being wobbly. Hmm. :/ I'm thinking either musical instrument string, or acupuncture needles are a good place to source something small enough yet strong enough.
Socketed termie body for use in "fights as" Typhus and Abbadon as well as my own creations. This body can spin 360 degree's without looking terribly out of proportion, unlike the original power armor body.
Here is the process by which I'm creating a 2 hander to fight as power weapon, force weapon, daemon weapon, or Bloodfeeder. This is a royal PITA, and in the future I'll likely source 2 handers from Warriors of Chaos WFB kits.
3 cuts with the GW clips.
Another 2 cuts removes most of the flash.
A few pics of the process being careful to check proportions regularly.
More trouble than its worth IMO, but the end result is pretty cool. Kitbashing would be easier than this though....live and learn!
I really want a ham and cheese croissant with a cinnamon twist and some hazlenut coffee. Creating pure evil is hungry work!

Thats one of the reasons I trim my GS'd joins so closely. Keeping it wet and having a SHARP ASS SCALPEL are really the most important parts. Everything else boils down to practice from what I can tell...oh and having good clay tools for detail work....which I don't. There were points during the socketing process than I was dunking the pieces in my water pot every 5 minutes to make damn sure nothing was sticking or stretching.
I believe Oadie wanted a demonstration of the strength of the magnets. In this picture the only thing holding the model in my fingertips is the magnet at the waist join. It is more than able to hold the GS filled base and a few scenic pieces. This is why I use plastic instead of metal.

Thanks man!
Gonna make an effort to only put the cherry picked best shots up. Takes too much time. I am however keeping pics of the entire process on my photobucket. I think there are 90 some odd pics in the folder now. If you have any questions as to a specific part of the model, PM me and I'll send you the link!
Building 2 handed weapons for this project is turning out to be extremely time consuming. Not "difficult" but requires an astronomical amount of patience. I'm going to either need to pin the blade/haft on, reduce the length, or use an alternate blade. Keeping not going to glue the two arms together as its just too much of a PITA, and its just begging to get broken every time you take the arms off.
And all the stuff so far.
Most of the arms from previous pictures needed to be resized to work with the terminator legs. There are alot of them, so this is the start on my home made molds for alignment dowels and magnet sockets. Should save me ALOT of time in the future.
It was made by smooshing a blob of greenstuff (more blue than yellow) onto a WFB base, then I poured a little water on my glass top coffee table and worked it smooth applying water as needed to stop any friction. Easiest way to get a really flat finish on a large surface. The stack of magnets was then pressed into it to make the circles. Have to keep going back and resizing the holes every hour and a half or so during the curing process.

I love it. I like how a single unit and a box of bits and turn into several diffrent things. Keep it up and keep us posted!

Here is a close up of the stuff I've worked on tonight. Terminator torso was shaved and magnetized to fit both heads pictured....I figure if the horns and Khornate thingies have clearance anything will.
And a side by side comparison to a standard marine and standard terminator. This would "fight as" a Chaos Lord of Khorne w/wings and Bloodfeeder.

On specific weapons, no idea. I do however know that I want to have options modeled for the heads, torso armor, and hopefully some additional legs (as well as weapons) to use "Fights as" for the following characters.
Abbadon the Despoiler
Fabius Bile
Huron Blackheart
Typhus
Kharn the Betrayer
Ahriman
Chaos Lord (for each god) both in Terminator armor and Power armor
Chaos Sorceror in both Terminator armor and Power armor
Wing options for power armor, multiple familiars, umm....lots of terrain fluff. Been working on the project for about 4 days....hope to have alot more done in the coming weeks.
Using the artwork for each one in the CSM codex as inspiration.
I've left enough room between mag points on the 60mm base to allow for building god specific mounts on down the road. Automatically Appended Next Post: Baby oil has an interesting effect on GS. Which is cool cause I keep plenty around. My little mold for the alignment dowels should be ready in the morning. :p
