Hi folks at Dakka,
after reading Galaxy in Flames for the 3rd or 4th time i came up with this idea in my head:

An army formed of the loyalist Space Marines that were deployed and ambushed at Isstvan III. Colour scheme would be a mix of the pre heresy schemes(e.g. Pink Emperors Children, Death Guard in black and white, etc.).
So right now I'm looking for inspiration for this project, as of Army List Ideas, special characters, which codex to use, etc...
Codex: Space Wolves came to mind cause it would be easy to use Wolf Guards attached to Greyhunter Packs for the various captains.
So far I came up with:

Captain Saul Tarvitz(10th company Emperors Children) - Wolf Lord
Ancient Rylanor(Dreadnought Emperors Children) - Bjorn the Fell Handed/Venerabel Dread
Captain Lucius(13th company Emperors Children) - Lukas the Trickster
Captain Tarik Torgaddon(2nd company Lunar Wolves) - Wolf Guard in terminator armour attached to a grey hunters squad
Captain Garviel Loken(10th company Lunar Wolves) - Wolf Guard in terminator attached to grey hunters
Sergeant Nero Vipus(10th company Lunar Wolves) - Power armored Wolf Guard attached to grey hunters
Captain Ehrlen(World Eaters) - ?
Captain Solomon Demeter(2nd company Emperors Children) - ?

Thanks in advance for every comment helping me with this fluff project

I think it's better to use Tarvitz as Ragnar.

And they should be played as Wolf Lords too.

I'd count Lucius or Captain Ehrlen as Ragnar

additionally if you want to keep it fluffy, you're not going to have any Terminator armor amongst this force, unless you want to do a 'counts as' sort of thing.

In my garden being molested by an androgynous lamb.

None of them were terminators, emperors children wore purple with gold trims and the death guard completely boltgun metal. I am a seasoned veteran of pre-heresy stuff (I am usually modest) and my advice would be to get the corresponding chaos marine kits, file down the chaos iconography and stick on any imperial symbols if you so wish. Please post the finished product of this idea in the gallery as I would love to see the work of other pre-heresy collectors.

For Magnus and Tzeen... the emperor!

In older pre heresy pictures the Death Guard where Metal coloured, but in the new books they are Grey/Green, so Vladinhurst is correct.

Demeter should be above Tarvitz in rank. The only reason Tarvitz took control over Dememter in the book was because he was injured. Demeter was captain of the second company and you could therefore assume he would be a more proven leader. Tarvitz even said in Horus Rising he reckoned he had reached his peak as captain of the tenth and wouldn't progress any higher. I'd be tempted to not have Demeter for this reason, yes he was part of the loyalist force but barely took part in the fighting. Including him would give you a problem with Tarvitz.

Lucius on the other hand somehow needs to be a more formidable opponent than Tarvitz but of a lower rank. Yes he was captain also but it was Tarvitz who showed himself to be the true leader on Isstvan III, the result of which (Tarvitz becoming the hero) was what drove Lucius to betray them.

This is an excellent idea, but I think rather than use the Space Wolf Codex and try and shoe-horn in some of these personalities into a standard FOC you have multiple small forces commanded by these varous individuals and you could use either a base leader type, whether is is a Codex Space Marine Captain, Blood Angle Captain, Black Templar Marshal or a Wolf Lord with appropriate weapons. Use the various codices to get the right feel of each Character but then just use the Basic marine codex stats for the rest of the troops and do not take advantage of army specific rules to gain and advantage. I think to capture the flavor and feel of the force accurately this may be more appropriate. It also then does not limit you to try and squeeze them all in somehow.

Another option would be to just use the codex you prefer, select a Wolf Lord or Chapter Master or even an appropriate named character to "count as" Tarvitz, choose one of your other Captains, here I would think Loken makes sense, and make him also either a Captain or even again a second Named Character, Wolf Lord/Chapter Master, etc... as you deem appropriate and treat the remaining Captains as the Sergeants in list, maybe bumping them each up to two wounds and expanding the available wargear as needed. Obviously the downside to this approach is it limits you to "fun" games but may give you a better feel for the list.

If you were going to stick with your orignal plan then the Space Wolves make sense but I think I would make Tarvitz a "counts as" Ragnar, use a Wolf Lord in Power Armor selection as as Loken and just use a Venerable Dread as Rylanor. Wolf Guard in Power armor and appropriate Weaponry would work for all of the other Captains, with maybe Lucius being a Marked Wolf Guard in Power Armor. I would think and then you just attach them to Grey Hunter Squads as needed and be in pretty good shape., and you could add in support units like Long Fangs as appropriate. The rest would then come down to painting and modeling to get the right feel. To do this really right, the best thing I think would be to use some of the new armor marks from Forge World, although that could get a bit pricey rather quickly. I do not think the Chaos armor would work at all as at this point their armor would not reflect those changes.

heya,
first of all thx for your nice input and ideas.
@Hialmar: I really like your ideas, actually your 2nd option would fit right in. If I play with this army, it would only be in fun games where I'm not really limited in term of accurate rules. Codex Space Marines would be my choice then.

@Triskelion: Finished product will be posted in the gallery but due to shortness of funds for wargaming it will take some time. Just started the thread to fill me up with inspiration, when the time comes

There are lots of nice Pre Heresy armys out there(Bols or where I might get some ideas for modelling and sculpting

Anyways, I'll keep you updated!

I think Wolf Guard are too weak to resemble such great heroes and I wouldn't play a whole army of heroes since each commander commanded at least 1000 SM.

I know this is a realy nit-picky nit-pick but wouldn't be a heresy army project, not a pre-heresy, as Isstvan III is the start of the heresy?

and also no terminator armour on the models, but that has already been said.

No force organization charts and lots of infantry. I'm pumped to see Loken, he's my favorite character from the first parts of the Heresy novels.
