Hey folks!
I'd like to try building / converting some venoms, and most advice seems to be to start with a Vyper, cannibalize it and a raider together to make a Venom....
I'm not too enthusiastic about that prospect, since it entails kitbashing two $30+ models into one. Does anyone have any ideas of toys they've seen that could be used as a foundation, or anything like that? I'd definitely like to build venoms, but don't want to spend an arm and a leg doing it.

Isn't somewhere here on the boards was already posted Venom converted from Viper? And by fluff in codex it looks like just some Viper version (pic approve that too)
ps.

I think it depends on how true you want to be to the image in the codex.
I see it as being a large flying chariot type, so you could try this.
use the Vyper as the basis of course. trim off its side flanges, save these for later. Take 2 High Elf plastic chariot kits, and create a podium out of the chassis. Attatch the podium to the rear of the Vyper. Reattach the winged flanges with engine pods to the side of your new podium...use green stuff and/or plasticard to fill in the blanks.
Another way, which is honestly potentially more expensive or cheaper depending on how you see it, is use the foreward/rear podiums on the new Raider. Cut it in half, attach the Vyper front pod to it, and you could potentially make two venoms out of each raider.
just some ideas

I kitbashed 2 Vypers and a Raider into 2 Venoms. Cost about $69, or $35 ea., or what they will cost when actually released next year. Online retailers FTW.
I just assembled the Raider hull, cut in half, and used the front/rear halves as the passenger compartments on the Venoms by attaching to the rear of the Vypers. Needed a little greenstuff/plasticard, and turned out a little longer than I hoped (damn Vypers are LONG), but still shorter than a Raider, so it works. Left the Splinter Cannons in the nose, just replaced the Shuriken Catapult barrels with Splinter Rifle barrels since the splinter weapons all look alike anyway. Did use some plasticard "tube" to make the SC barrels wider to try to differentiate from a splinter rifle.
Am still working on finalizing it (smoothing greenstuff, etc.), but they are ready for playtests.

Vyper + Extra Raider Bits + Base + Underslung Cannons.
I'm more of a keep it simple kind of guy, so it's a pretty basic conversion really. Not entirely happy with how it turned out so I haven't decided if I'm going to keep it as is or turn it into something a little more spiffy. In the meantime, it works for local tourneys and games in which I want to be able to use a Venom (or two, or three).
Aside from using the Vyper as a base, I was thinking of using an OOP Jetbike, and using plasticard to make some sort of platform in back. Cheaper alternative to the Vyper anyway.
Anybody have thoughts / knowledge on where the guns should be mounted on a Venom? Couldn't find it anywhere in the book.

This is the by far the best conversion I've seen for a Venom. Was posted awhile back.

I would suggest leaving the canopy off of the vyper pilot to keep with the open topped DE asthetic. Also, put some keel blades in convenient spots. Possibly put one of the ram wedges up front.

10k pts Eldar (no jetbikes -- how is that possible?)
2k pts 3rd edition Wolves (no werewolves or clifford cavalry -- but I do have a nifty Leman Russ Exterminator shaped paperweight)
3k pts chaos marines

That looks really good. My only problem is what do you do with the leftovers? Ork Parts maybe?

I'd start with a Vyper for sure. I'd probably cut a piece of plasticard to use as the "floor" on the back (where the turrest gun would normally go). As for cannibalizing it with a Raider... I don't think you need anything more than some spikes and blade looking pieces to make it feel Dark Eldar-esque. You're probably picking up a bunch of new Raiders anyway (I know you have like 10 of the old ones but the new ones are just super cool so I'm assuming you'll get them), so you can just utilize the extra bitz leftover from them.

If you don't mind waiting, supposedly they've confirmed that the actual vyper model will be released by June of next year.

The venom on Flickr is the best I've seen. I dont think the GW version will be far from that one.
It's perfect.
