OK, aplogies if this is a nooby thing to ask, but hey..I play Epic most of the time FGS!!

Necrons. I always thought they were a race that were "sleeping" in certain planets untill they woke up and decimated the local population. I realise this is a simplistic of the "fluff", but from what I can gather, essentially correct.

So, can someone explain how the Necron Fleets from BFG fit into their background??

Necron ships are probably hidden below the surface of a planet on which they sleep or in deep space(IIRC there was a Necron ship which was sitting in a center of some star).
Necrons are awaken when someone stumbles on their tomb.

When Necrons wake up they go around reactivating the tomb world tis includes waking up more Necrons and the ships.

They do. The tomb worlds have been awakening for some time. Either the ships were within the worlds or in space and themselves turned on when the nearby tombworld started up.
