Here's a plug for my new site http://www.themanufactorum.com/.
I've been obsessively magnetizing models lately, and a number of people have put in "requests", so the whole thing has taken on a life of its own. It occured to me that if I could move the basic magnets in reasonable quantity, the price breaks for larger volumes would be a great advantage all round, so I've added a number of those, and I'll put more sizes on as required/requested.
So, here's the deal: I'm going to guarantee to at least match the prices of the larger suppliers (K&J, Magcraft, etc.) without requiring people to buy the huge numbers those suppliers often want you to purchase.
However, I'm also willing to commit to lowering those prices if I can achieve large enough volumes to get better price breaks. For example, 10 of a certain size might cost you a dollar, or 10c each. If you buy a hundred they drop to 9c each, and at 1000, they drop to 8c each. If I can get this to a point where I know I can move 1,000 in a reasonable period of time, I'll drop my price for 10 to 9c. I still make a penny and the buyer saves a penny.
As an added incentive to get things started, I'll throw in a pair of the HSS drill bits on any order over $10 - just mention Dakka in the notes at checkout.
I should also point out that I'm using the PayPal cart at the moment, simply because I didn't want the overhead of a full-blown shopping cart at this point. Again, if this turns out to be worthwhile, I'll invest the time and money for a decent cart down the line.
As I mention on the site, I'm not looking to make a fortune out of this - I have time on my hands at the moment and if it breaks even in the reasonably short term, I'll be quite happy.
A final note - the Dreadnought model on ebay finishes Saturday evening, I'll be listing a Venerable Dread next week (just finishing the video)...

Your prices are very reasonable. The last time I looked at magnets a few days ago, it was on average 12-5c per magnet + $10 shipping. The fact you can also order just the drill bit size you need is also a very nice deal. I'm glad I didn't order from anyone yet!

Very nice! Very nice indeed. Once I have some $ to get models, I'll put a bit aside for magnetizing my dreads at a minimum.
Awsome work, and glad that you are going forward on more than just the speeder bases.

Hi,
Can you get an RSS feed or a twitter so I can subscribe? I'd really like to know when the terminator ones go up as I have several to magnetize.
Good work indeed.

Do you sell the pin vise? I just dont find it to sell near me, and with those shipping costs, it would be great if you could sell one.

Well, thank you to everyone for the responses both here and through the site.
I can source a basic pin vice for about $7 - it's pretty basic, but it's what I use myself. I will get a few in, but it'll be the best part of a week before I receive them.
@Orinoco, the one you're thinking of is sold by Gale Force 9 as part of their pinning kit. It's $15 on their site and I'm sure plenty of big name retailers would have it on their sites.

Pretty fair prices... I myself got "raped" on an epay deal not reading the "fine print", $2.00 worth of 1/16 magnets and $13.00 shipping....
I was happy with K&J magnetics but they to have rather high shipping.
Will be placing an order this week... and that pin vise works great I have one, simple but very handy...

Absolutely - it's the first item on the Kits page -- "Generics -> Flying Base Kit".
@The Dwarf Wolf - will check my email shortly - it was my little girl's birthday yesterday so it got a bit hectic here with loads of 3 year olds running around!

Several more sizes added on the site for those interested.
I've been looking into the pin vices and it seems I would have to order a ludicrous number to get any significant break in the price.
So, what I thought was I would add a dollar to the price which would offset the increased cost to post them (they're heavy compared to magnets). That would bring them to $8, but postage would remain the same for all orders.
Does that seem reasonable?

Pin vices are on order and should be here before the week is out.
@the dwarf wolf: I'll add it to your other order and we'll sort the money out later!
@grizgrin: the more the merrier. Every large order drops the cost for everyone. If you need more than the pull-down options offer, drop me a PM or email and we can sort that out!

Good to see another Dakka member starting up another small business. Just a thought, have you considered contacting Scott-s6 regarding distributing S6 Engineering products in the US. It seems he has prespective US customers that are put off by the UK to US postage costs. Could be an opportunity to expend your range?

Lots of people ought to like what you are offering.
Suggestion- list the sizes and quantities of the magnets included in the magnetizing kits. Also, add pics of the magnets alongside some sort of model bit or small object that everyone can recognize.

I have to confess there's a part of me that's a little wary of getting ripped off. While I'm not doing this to get rich, I'm putting a lot of effort into R&D to do the kits and if I provide what amounts to a shopping list how many sales am I likely to lose?
A Dakka member asked if my standard Dreadnought kit would work with the Venerable version, and I wasn't sure, so I went out and got the model. It turned out it was massively different. My point is that I've spent money on the model, a lot of time to work out the best way to do it, take pictures, write instructions and at the end of all that I can't stop some guy in China selling the same thing on eBay.
I'm sure it's impossible to know, given the nature of the internet. Anyway, here's the draft part list and instructions for the Venerable Dreadnought kit:
http://www.themanufactorum.com/kits/ven_dread/assembly.htm
Now let's see how many I can actually sell!
shabbadoo wrote:Also, add pics of the magnets alongside some sort of model bit or small object that everyone can recognize.
Agreed. I'll probably do the same as K&J and show the magnets next to a penny, especially as US and British pennies are almost exactly the same size.

Honestly, I don't know. I don't think the weight is a problem - more balance. I'm working on an alternative flying base for larger models - some of the Tau models come to mind, also the Valkyrie, etc.
PM me and I'll send you one to test.
I really want to do some Tau stuff - a lot of their models are flyers and obviously kits to facilitate weapon swaps would have potential. It's just finding time to do it all!
I just finished the prototype for a tiny $1 base for the gun drones which I'm quite pleased with:
The production version will use aluminium - a metal much like the aluminum Americans are used to - for the connection.
Then I really need to get some new videos uploaded...
