Facial animation is good. It's... low res, but decent.

I guess the helmetlessness is...erm.....vanity type things on the voice actors?

Plus it looks cooler, and avoids Power Rangeresque excessive head movement to show who is talking.

If I had to guess, it's to "humanize" the characters. You can't really empathize with a person whose face you never see, since you never really get to figure out their emotional states.

It's what I like to call the "Stormtrooper Effect".

They actually do have their helmets on for most of the movie, so I don't think you'll be too bent out of shape about then when you see the whole thing!
