When shooting bows, do you have to measure range for each model or do you just use the front rank? I know you use the front rank for LoS...

No exceptions are made on range for the 2nd rank (or the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and so on with volley fire). So you would determine who's in range, and who's in half range, on a model by model basis.
Which makes perfect sense, it's not like an empire long rifle magically increases the range of the rest of the unit to 36".

The distance is from the front of the model's base, not the unit's front rank so it's possible not all model's will be range to shoot.

I'd love to hear the reasoning behind this comment. Why would anyone think that just cause one model has a larger range everyone else would get that...

It's an example to show the flawed logic.
If I have a unit of dwarf quarrellers, 20 wide and 2 deep, and they fire at an enemy coming in at a angle, you can't claim all 40 can shoot just because the one model in the corner is in range, while the rest are out of range. If it did work that way, everyone would field long rifiles in the empire units, and warplock muskets in the globadier units.

At least with that they all have the same weapon and hence the same range. Saying that because one guy has a better gun everyone gets to use it's stats isn't logical at all, it's just silly.
But this is just me picking on what I saw as a silly example.

On a related note, do you check LOS for each model? For example, if an enemy unit is just on the edge of the 45 degree arc for LOS from the front edge of the unit, would only those models that have the unit in their own personal front arc be able to fire?
This came up in my game yesterday and we said only 4 models had LOS (out of 20), but weren't sure (they were shooting my hounds and killed them anyway, but I'd like to know how to play it properly)

See the "we can't all fire" rule on page 39. It seems to say that only the models who have it in their ark, as well as range, get to shoot.

But you do have permission to use the front rank for LoS. Just not range.

Is that right? Argh, all these little instances where it's not clear and we're all still flying blind
It made sense to me that if they have to check for range, they'd have to check for LOS... but then again, for charges and the like, it's just the unit that needs LOS to act, so that makes sense, too.
(Not that rules in a fantasy game have to make sense or anything )

You'd be amazed at how much they need to make sense
I am having trouble imagining a situation where the front rank's LOS wouldn't necessarily be included in the rear rank's, though perhaps if they were right up against a wall on one flank and trying to shoot someone catty corner to them. Even then, it should only cost you a few model's shooting.
