Just a question about the backstory books. What are some good titles to sart with? Is there any specific order they should be read in to be enjoyed to their full extent? Also, what are the best based on opinion? And the amount of information they yield on the Warhammer background?

Where to begin? There a lot of good starting titles. Why not have a go at the HH series? Seeing as you're a 'Nid player though, maybe Dawn of War 2?

The 40k rule book has some good basic info as do each races codex.
The Horus Heresy are an okay series to read about, as you would expect, the events leading up to to and during Horuses rebellion against the Big E.
The Space Marines battle novels could be okay.
The Inquisitor trilogy, an old series but well worth reading.

DO NOT READ THE DOW BOOKS!!!!!! you will rip your eyes out and plead for the end, yet the end will not come.
Don't read anything by their author either. his name is C.S. Goto. his writings are an affront to 40k and the BL.
Good Books to start:
the Ultramarines Omnibus. good introduction to the 40k universe, has a good story, well written.
the Space Wolves Omnibuses. if you like Space Wolves you will love it, everyone else will love it too. well written with an intriguing story. Nice dynamic characters.
the HH books. they have a different atmosphere from other BL books(less Grimdark) to begin with.
other good books:
Titanicus: like Titans? this book is for you.
Grey Knight Omnibus: gives alot of background into the Ordo Malleus and it has excellent character development.
Blood Angels Omnibus: gives more explaination into the "Red Thirst" and does an excellent drama into the struggles of 2 brothers(sounds just like a soap opera natch it's BAs)

this. Plus what faction most interests you? thats always good place to start, if you've got an interest in one particular race or faction, there's at least a few books about it.

The first Space Wolves Omnibus is a good introduction to the universe, you'll follow a young initiate through SM "boot camp" so to speak. Also, while I love the Gaunt books, any of the IG books are a good starting point.
