After playing with the colors and how to paint Deathwing ( I use to use all white back in the day ) and after looking and searching ways to paint DW I came up with a system. My test Terminator came from the free WD Terminator sprue what a better candidate to use lol. Now here is the Sgt. and using my airbrush came up with a system of black primer, Graveyard earth first base then, Bone white then washed with Sepia.
I am also working on my assualt squad and used the Vanguard box to include in my regular assault guys as veterans in the squad.
I posted my WIP on my gallery.
Hope you like.

I really like the Vanguard model and can see the clean lines on the Deathwing Terminator but the lighting in the photograph makes the colors look washed out.

Really like the checkered shoulderpad.

Skalk Bloodaxe thanks for the complement. I am close to finishing both. I am trying out Les Bursly power sword style, the one he did for the space wolves tutorial I will post it soon.

Cool stuff, i think your brushed power sword looks best on the jump pack marine, i like the green you have for your da aswell, looks alot better than normal da I am doing my deathwing in black as i have not really seen any bone schemes i liked, yours is good however, i do feel that the chest of the termi is a bit dark compared with the rest of the mini or have you only painted part stages with it being the tester? will look out for more

WhaleMusic and Calibanite Lion thanks the airbrushed tecnique works great. The terminator was my first one and looked ok but the assualt marine came out better. Yea I wanted a wear and tear look and not a squeeky clean out of the forge look. I am experimenting on the free termie we got from WD on the chipped and damaged look. I will post more. I don't have to much reference to go off of and was thinking going back old school like you and go all black and red, but decided to go with the current. Maybe when forge world does more throwback figures I will do a squad. Thanks again everyone.

Yea with the shoulder pads I had to bring back the classic colors, you know never forget where you came from.
Originally when the 2nd ed ( I believe its been awhile ) Space Hulk I was furious with GW making my DA Termies white like look at me shoot me cause you can see me now! But then when 3rd ed 40k and several WD mags came out it sorta grew on me. Well I took a look at yours and you brought back some time when I had my first termie box set in the 80's when all my marines was black and red. You did a great job on your force.

Popsicle I will do one with my other squad and will post it. So keep a eye out. Silly boy and Blunt man thanks the idea was from Les Bursley for the power sword and I seem to get the concept using the airbrush.
I am trying to get my guys on the table so looking at what I think is tabletop quality and not masterpieces that wouild take months for one figure. Silly I can shoot you a email if you want regarding the wash.

I love your paint scheme, excellent shading tone and high lights. Which is why I don't like your gold. Try using all the same techniques on the gold trims and then dry brush gold over the top. I start with brown with a little gold added, for the base coat. I add yellow and gold for the next coat and then use gold for high lights. I painted my slaannesh the same way you are painting your marines. I used a drastic shading scheme and just painted the gold a solid tone. So for the last 5 years I've wished that I had read tutorials on the web before I finished my noise boys. If you want to read tutorials, this sight is soaked in good metallic techniques. Try looking into the metal free metallic style I find that if you paint larger metal items this way and then dry brush gold or silver over them you'll end up with a great finish.

Thanks for the comment Meatshield. But I was not trying to go for a full NMM on all the metalics just the sword. Maybe you can show some of your slaannesh guys on your gallery and show me what you are explaining. I am more a true metalics guy but when Les did his power sword it looked so cool I had to test this technique out. So all my power swords will be like this for now. But yea I been lurking behind the scene for some years on dakka and found this place full of info and inspiration.

Ok after a short Thanksgiving holiday (I had to work Friday) I was grinding away to get my marines done. My Vet Assault Marines is down and 1 1/2 to go. I still have to do some touch ups and detail on them but they look good at the moment. My Terminators I just had to grind away cause I believe light colors are intimidating and not forgiving. So I went online and did my continuing research from WW II German desert paint themes to modern US paint themes to get the weathering effect and not new out of the forge. Since I was in the first Gulf War most of my pictures was damaged by water and can't go by that reference. So I decided to not be so picky for my tabletop army and even though I want all my guys to look amazing on the table that would be too long(sorry for the ramble ). So here you guys go let me know what you think. I will also post on my gallery for you all to look at. Enjoy.

Your swords metal is pretty nifty. On the last one it would look a little bit better if you blended the blue a bit more. Right now it just looks like a streak of blue painted onto the blade rather than a reflection or shadow. Do you have a double action airbrush? If you ease up on the amount of paint when you do the stroke a little slower it could make a huge difference. Other than that I love the terminators! Reminds me of the white termies I always saw when I started Warhammer way back when. But, in all honesty, these are way better. The off white/beige tones make them feel organic and more at ease than most other armored units. What did you do on the termies bases (specifically the ones with the cobble stones)? Did you green stuff the stones and lay down some sand? I love your basing, and I rarely get to see well thought out bases.

Infrenis thanks, yea still getting the grasp of this technique of the power swords, and yea its a double action AB and loving using it more. As for the base its just sand and the GW small slate and large slate. I got a sort of a theme to match my gaming table. You can see a bit more on my gallery.

Well I wanted to post these while I was updating, I was assembling my new terminators (well had them for weeks but never opened them) while my other figures are drying or needed a mind break from painting.
These are much better then the AOBR models and more posable. I am going to experement again on the paint scheme and do more airbrushing then the brush technique.
I will keep you all posted on my progress.

these are really lovely models! i love the bone white tones you achieved for your DW and the vanguard vets look stunning! I will attempt the sword technique but due to no airbrush i'll have a crack at wet blending! but hey! you've inspired me to try new things and in this hobby that's always good! keep up the excellent work please!
