Hey guys,
I've been trying to use some Red Gore I got about a year ago and even back then it behaved like this.
It won't stick to ANYTHING with a black undercoat, it justs runs straight off even when it's not thinned and makes one helluva mess.
I used some on a white-undercoated Skaven from IoB and it performed a lot better, though it was still runny.
I want to use it as a basecoat on my Eldar, probably with a Spraygun, but I'm really paranoid it's going to misbehave.
Is Red Gore usually such a misbehaving colour? I notice that reds in general appear to prefer a white undercoat but at least my Blood Red appears to behave itself...

Sounds like it's just overthinned. I've used it over white, Mechrite Red, and black and generally get okay results.

I dont know if it should have that type of reaction to black primer. I have used it and applied straight to primer before, it does take a few coats for coverage, but shouldnt run right off of your model. There is definately something wrong...I would suggest applying mechrite red before you put red gore on your model

I would be more inclined to blame the primer than the red. I know if you use any sort of gloss primer you'll have that exact result, but typically as long as you're using a flat spray paint there shouldn't be any issues.

I've used red gore on my entire IG army, and havent had any running/drying issues. If anything I find it to be a bit thick.

Applying excessively thin paints to a primer with no foundation will have the affect that you spoke of.
Shake the bottle, use a foundation (mechrite red is godly) and should get you the results you want.

You might want to try this method:
1)base coat with a 50/50 mix of red gore and chaos black.
2)then paint using red gore,it should cover well.

The old ones used to be like that. Putting red straight over black has never been a recipe for success, though.

2 Things may be the problem here, though there is only one thing that you have any control over, that is the primer. You should not be applying a solid layer of primer, if the primer layer is too smooth, the paint has nothing to "bite" into and will simply run off, when you apply your primer apply it in a semi-transparent, and thin coat. Click on the banner in my signature, a recent post I made on my blog talks about proper primer technique and shows a picture of the appropriate effect.
The other reason why you are having this problem is that there is a very low amount of "binding" agent in red paint. Red is such a saturated color that it leaves little room left for a binding agent, there is just so much pigment in it. For sales purposes GW makes all paint bottles the same size, but this is horrible practice for quality. If you go to a decent art shop and look at the oil paints you will see that the price is dependent on the color, not the size of the tube. Windsor and Newton sell the same size tube, but a titanium white, and cobalt blue, and a cadmium red are all going to be extremely different in price, because it is based on the amount of pigment in the tube, not the over all quantity of paint.
So red's are always going to paint thin, and appear runny, because there is not enough binder in them. One thing I found that helps is a little bit of Future Floor Polish, I keep a 50/50 bottle of Future/Water on my desk near my paints, when ever I work with White, Yellow, or Red, I will put a little paint on my pallet, and a little of my 50/50 mix, this helps the paint bind and flow a little better, providing me with better results.

I use Red Gore mixed with Blood Red as a layer on my Tyranids, and it workd fine. Try using Scab Red if you have difficulties. It will provide a similar finish.

I recommend using black primer and then using mechrite red as a base coat then applying the other reds as you wish. Mechrite red looks just like scab red and red gore goes well over the top. more work though.

If you want it really bright you can always lay a foundation layer of white down over the black. I've had success in doing this on the chitin plates on my 'nids and it really brightens up the red over top of it.
If you're feeling fancy you can do a gradation of grays up to white to get good shading before you apply the red, then the red will show the blending underneath. In principle this works, however when I tried it, my blending skills are fairly sub-par, and it didn't look as smooth as I'd hoped.

Similar to Redfinger I use additives to make certain paints do what they are told.
My red gore has a measure of Luquitex matte varnish undiluted added to it. It thickens it up and helps adhesion. I also use it in my magenta to extend the paint.

Red Gore is Citadel Color. Colors that are bright don't EVER stick to black. Use Mechrite under it. I paint my DE and CSM red gore over mechrite, and I still have to use a couple coats to get it consistent. A couple coats of mechrite at least.

I have the same problem with Kommando Khaki, it's useless!
My Red Gore is a little on the thin side but it's not bad; I don't avoid using it like I do with KK.

I have the same problem with Red Gore. It's always really watery and thin. So I end up having to apply several thin coats whenever I paint with it.

vallejo's line of paints, game colour has excellent coverage for it's shade of red gore. it emulates the gw line's shades and you get more, it covers better and is cheaper. I rarely use any gw paints these days.
