I was looking forward to Rock Band 3. Unlike Guitar Heroes, RB actually inovates. The latest one will actually teach you to play real guitar and almost real piano. However don't even see it it stores, there's no hype and I think its moved like 200K units. It's too bad because this this game was probably the shot in the arm this genre needed but Activision's repetative GH series has already killed it.

These games should have never come to light in the first place. If those guys that get 100% on the highest difficulty on Youtube actually picked up a guitar and played it as often as they played GH, they could have learned that same song on guitar.

Not really, it's totally different. Except for drums where you are actually drumming. And except for RB3 which actually has fully-stringed guitars!

They're still fairly successful, it's just the console knock offs are rather bland and repetitive and seem to be made with the assumption that it won't matter.

Pretty much all GH and RB done was found a gap inbetween all the usual music games like SingStar and the rest of the singing games, took the risk to swap from vocals to the instruments and it more than likely paid off for them untill they started releasing game after game.

I never really understood the apeal of music games, I love listening to music but i've never really had the dedication to learn how to play an instrument and I don't see the point of pretending to play an instrument in a game. They seem fairly popular though.

Hmm seems you may have misunderstood me, i didnt say Gh or RB suck, quite the opposite, they took their chance to fill a niche within the likes of Singstar and all those other games. Shame to say they exploited it too much imo.

Guitar Heroes came first I believe. Singstar filled the niche of people who wanted to play GH but lacked the manual dexterity to do so.

Actually singstar was released in 2004 and GH was released in 2005. So yea it was GH who filled a niche not singstar.

Dunno what you're talking about there. I can easily FC a lot of songs on expert drums, guitar and vocals. It's not hard in the least. It's a cruel assumption to think that people like us have no lives or that we waste our time instead of playing real instruments.
Anyway, to the OP. RB3 is pretty good. I don't really give a gak about pro-mode though....My biggest complaint about the game is that you can't tell when you're failing. There's a slight red hue to the screen, and the crowd stays silent....But whatever. This isn't a problem for someone of my skill level, but when you're sightreading a new song, it gets annoying. The setlist is good, the graphics got slightly better, and the menus stopped with that ugly guitar noise crap
Music games are sort of dead. I've been playing guitar hero with my friends since it came out , and we've moved on to rockband. Rockband will always be a step ahead of GH..... GH is the child of yester-year. RB is the better option because you get more variety, yes I know GH has moved up to. But RB was the first. (I'm strictly talking about being able to play more then just Guitar.)
To be honest, releasing new games for those just seems stupid. Would've made alot more sense if they just made 1 game and then downloadable content for the games or updates when adding new features. This would've been far greater and I honestly think they would've seen a much larger return as people don't feel ripped off for paying $60 and only getting a few more songs they didn't have on the previous years title.
That's my major complaint for the games as a whole though. But it is a damn fun game to play when you're drinking. Drums are hard, they're even harder when you're tanked. So is trying to stand up and play with the guitar or standing up and singing without falling over onto someone else.
Any who, good times and I'll miss the fun until I get back home next year.

On this subject, I must say that, as a player of a great many instruments, learning how to do something is much, much more than regurgitating information given to you.
After having handled the full Rock Band 3 and the two new sets of peripherals (Fender Mustang guitar and keyboardtar thing), I am confident in saying that the new PRO modes for both guitar and bass are little more than playing from only partial correct tabulature while the song is playing on in the background, while the Pro keyboard (you must be a tool if you insist on calling it 'Keys') goes at least a little deeper into how everything works (there's a mention of middle C at one point in the tutorial!)
One complaint of mine is that, in the Pro Bass/Guitar system, there is no Pro bass peripheral and it does not look like there will be a bass-specific item in the near future either, so I am left sitting on my hands for the moment. Next, the Pro mode chart runs down a vertical track. Needless to say, this is a quite disorienting at first after reading music from left to right for so many years. Third of all, on certainly more than one occasion has the note that I was fingering not registered, or would register as another note entirely if I was a little too close to another fret. In other words, they have yet to iron out some kinks.
My only real problem with the keyboard setup is that small, two-octave peripheral will not let you run a line on either hand at the same time, forcing the player to play either the bass or the lead of the piano track (generally the lead). Personally, if I had one, I would use a full-size midi keyboard in it's stead, but then one would have to purchase the special Rock Band midi adapter for an extra thirty-or-so dollars.
None of the tutorials or any such thing give time to improvise over a track, teach one the note names and their relationships, or even how one would properly finger 'x' chord, meaning a learning tool this is most definably not.

Yeah, music games are the best multiplayer/party games. They're also one of those video games you can get girls to play who don't like video games and everyone has fun. Automatically Appended Next Post:
I don't know why you are even talking about singstar. GH and RB together have sold 69,000,000 units. Singstar has sold 8. Trust me, singstar is the niche.

The Fender Mustang is the crazy 100-button controller right? Have yo used the Squier Stratocaster pro guitar with strings? That is the one I'm interested in. Has anyone used it? I would very much like to know their opinion on this pricey peripheral

I have yet to use the Squire guitar peripheral, but I believe it will end up being a similar thing to the Mustang.
Although the nylon strings on the Squire may be a little more comfortable than the built-into-the-neck plastic raised bits of sprue-y stuff on the Mustang.

I can say from owning an ACTUAL squire guitar; you won't be happy with it. Squier is notorious for making crappy guitars
But as a controller, it should be pretty good. I hope.
