Cozy cockpit of an Archer ARC-5S

So, first week of vacation almost over, still got one more to go, but in the meantime it feels like I've painted more in those last few days than I did in the last six months.

One of the things I did was paint up some scatter terrain. Two reasons for this, I need a lot of it for games of SW-A for models to hide behind and Azazel's blog has nice pieces of scatter on display every now and again, which certainly gave a bit of extra motivation to work on these. It was also a nice diversion from painting nothing but infantry all the time, while still forcing myself to keep holding onto a brush and not do something else for the rest of the day. Nothing too shocking technique wise, just a simple basecoat, wash, drybrush and in case of the crates, a decal or two to give them a little something extra.

The crates have been glued together into stacks of two high, so models have something nice to hide behind or clamber over for a clearer shot.

One of the teams I've started work on is an Angels of Something-something kill team, which will most likely be much hated by some of the locals, because of well.. I'm lonely, shut it.

Still need to do one or two coats of red for the chainsword housing of the sergeant, plus devise a simple urban camo pattern for the cloak of the sniper, but other than that, these are done. It was a nice diversion to paint something other than blue or red all the time and I've always secretly wanting to do something Dark Angels related for some time now, especially something involving the classic image of dark green armour and bright red housings for their bolters, an image well cemented into my head for some reason. I also wanted to pay homage to the old Space Crusade scouts, who had these weird mohawks with mullets / tails, so the bolter scout has a small mohawk.

A simple team really, heavily focused on ranged:

Sergeant - bolt pistol & chainsword
Scout - bolter
Scout - shotgun
Scout - sniper rifle, camo cloak, red-dot laser sight, telescopic sight
Gunner - heavy bolter

On the desk right now are two extra noviate scouts (read: scrubs), both armed with bolt pistols and combat knives, who will act as cheap reinforcements for campaign games. As always, the heads are from Statuesque Miniatures.

The other team I've been working on are the Skitarii, having gotten a box from my FLGS on Monday (thanks Mark!) with the test model now done and the rest in various stages of completion:

Troika-14, a reference to a rather disappointing novel about the Skitarii, armed with a plasma caliver. The rest of the squad will swiftly follow and be done on Monday, fingers crossed, as I may turn this team into my primary team for an upcoming campaign later this month.

This team is a strictly ranged affair, though I did build an Alpha armed with an arc maul and arc pistol for melee duties, but why get stuck in when you can shoot them from a distance instead?

Skitarii Ranger Alpha - Galvanic rifle, omnispex
Skitarii Ranger - Galvanic rifle
Skitarii Fresh-forged - Radium carbine
Skitarii Fresh-forged - Radium carbine
Skitarii Specialist - Plasma caliver
Skitarii Specialist - Transuranic Arquebus, red-dot laser sight

I mainly hope to dig in and shoot-shoot-shoot with my Arquebus and Alpha, whose omnispex is a filthy piece of equipment. The other specialist and fresh-forged will move out and wipe out anything I can't snipe straight away. Or so I like to think. Knowing my luck, all terrain will have no great points to snipe from.

And on the desk right now:

Back row: Skitarii warband, with two alpha's, one holding an omnispex, the other kitted out for melee. I'm still going to finish the melee variant, but chances of him seeing action are in hindsight slim to nil.

Ogryn, almost done! Just need to redo the shield and the housing of the power maul.
Noviate scouts: primed as of now, but will be started on after the Skitarii are done.
An Inquisitor primed gold! Not sure what I'm going to do with this model just yet, but I felt like priming her, so I went ahead and did just that.
A pair of converted scions. Not sure when I'm going to start on those, perhaps after I'm done with the scouts.

Looking great, I'm glad to see that SWA is encouraging people to do more cool and converted squads.

Any news on the Porphyrion?

Looking good dude. You're making some nice progress on the Armagedon stuff. Really liking the Scouts.

Great work here on a pile of stuff. Scatter terrain looks great for starters, and it's always useful

The scouts look very cool - are they all Statuesque heads? I might have to steal that scout idea. I found my Statuesque heads, actually - but maybe I should buy some more after seeing your scouts and Scions! - and the Skitarii model looks sweet.

Also, jealous that you scored Armageddon. I had cash set aside for two copies before it transpired that they pulled the limited-edition, one-run bs with it, and so I missed out.

Had a bit of an unofficial hiatus or something that was going on around here hobby-wise. Work and other things have been weighing rather heavily on my in the last few months, blergh and all that, leaving me most of the time rather in the dumps and not motivated to paint, instead spending a lot of the time reading books and making a dent into a massive backlog on that, or spending a lot of time playing games, like Wolfenstein - the New Order (good!), Prey (good!) Nidhogg (what is this even) and Remember Me (I will forget about you). While I have been hoarding more and more kits, books and whatnot, even getting my first few games of the new edition in (mostly through playing a lot of First Strike), I haven't touched a brush in over four months now, at least until yesterday when I decided to start work on yet another Imperial Knight kit I bought last weekend, along with a box of skulls and another (number seven or eight now, I need to seek professional help at this stage) Start Collecting! Militarum Tempestus box for my 40k army of choice: Storm Troopers.

I am slowly building this one up, one stage at a time really, deciding to work on everything downstairs first before moving on to the torso. The base still needs a light drybrush of something light, tufts of grass and I may add in some skulls, because I've got a box of them right now, so why not?

Unlike previous Knights, this one will be a Freeblade to go with my Militarum Tempestus army, using the same colours and cues as them. Still debating whether to turn it into a Paladin using a spare battle cannon arm or to make it a Gallant. The model will also be using a Forge World variant head that I got as a overly belated Christmas thing last this year. Carapace may get an Icarus or be left bare, the missile pod from this kit is already taken for another model I'm still working on.

Not saying I'm back, that would invite hubris, but I'm happy that I've picked up a brush again after so long.

Torso, head, carapace and assorted armoured plates done and in place, there may be something in the water around here. I still need to apply decals to the top hatch and the tilting plate at the very least, plus add some grass to the base, but the progress so far is most pleasing.

The heraldic design on the tilting plate was painted on after flipping through the Imperial Knight codex, as I felt I needed to add something there and I had some new masking tape I've been meaning to try. I've decided to go with the "Master of Justice" design, which is one of the easier patterns, plus it can nicely be used to forge the narrative or something. A disgraced noble, or sole survivor of a fallen house, formerly the master of justice, now out for vengeance or the like, one head at a time.

Now on to the shoulder plates, which will be a fun chore in itself when the time comes to apply decals to those fethers.
