Thanks for that! I wanted him to look 'sure footed' and weighty. Glad you like him. I hope I can make the rest of the squad look as good, and intend to mix in some bits from other kits to make the squad interesting & dynamic. My next step after finishing up the Death Company will be Tactical marines. I'm really looking forward to getting started on them next, as painting black is growing slowly more tedious.

Look forward to more soon. Hopefully I'll get a little work in over the next couple of days. Fingers crossed.

Take it easy for now.

Finally an update!

Work has begun on the 4th Death Company marine last night. Here's the progress so far:

I got the base finished and also have the legs mostly finished as well outside of a few highlighting touchups and painting the rope on the right thigh, plus final gem detail work. Tonight I hope to get the legs finished, and then get the torso painted as well, fingers crossed.

I'll go ahead and get this one knocked out and then paint up one more DC marine, then move on to painting my Lemartes up so I have this squad finished and can move on to tactical marines I hope.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now.

Looking good. Regarding the Scouts, I went Red Armour with green khakis as a compromise.

Hey Evildrcheese,

I'm leaning toward going slate grey fatigues and mottled grey armor with some black mixed in and a splash of red on one shoulder. That way they look like they're 'camo cloaked' without having to tack a camo cloak on them.

That's what I'm leaning toward anyway. We'll see what I wind up doing.

Thanks for the suggestion, and I'll post pictures up once I get started on them.

Take it easy.

Crop is your friend, especially when the pictures are that big. When the first picture loaded, I wondered why there was a picture of your keyboard... Then I scrolled down...

Everything has been looking great. How many points are you up to now? Its been a while, I would imagine you got quite the army going.

Yea, whups.. I'll be sure to crop a little better in the near future when I post my next update. My bad on that end.

Thanks for the kudos. And sadly my points are a bit less than I'd like, as I'm really trying to take my time and paint each model to the best of my (limited) ability.

I've completed:

A Jump Pack Captain (Aedus Sendini)
A Jump Pack Librarian
Five Honor Guard
One Tactical Marine (Heavy Flamer, test mini for my tactical squads)
Three Death Company

That's it so far. I'm about 1/3 finished with the 4th Death Company Marine, and then will move on to the 5th squad member, before painting Lemartes and starting work on some Tactical Marines and Scout Marines. I also have a Drop Pod, a Dreadnought Drop Pod, and a Dreadnought to assemble and paint.

Lots to do, and I'm inching my way along slowly. The goal is to have the Death Company and Lemartes finished up by the end of February, and then hopefully have the first half of a tactical squad wrapped up by Mid march so I can knock out the Scouts in short order by April and start work on the second half of the Tactical Squad box. Obviously this is best case scenario and I doubt I will maintain that pace working two jobs at present, but I will give it the ole college try in any case.

More updates to come. Take it easy for now.

Further progress!

The spraypaint got a little grainy on the side and back of the torso, but shouldn't be too noticeable once the arms and jump pack are attached.

Next step, arms, shoulder pads, and jump pack to finish off the mini.

More to come soon, thanks for looking and take it easy everyone.

Shame about the spray. It isn't particularly noticable right now. Hopefully the arms/backpack will cover it up!

Thanks for that War Kitten. In theory I should have this mini mostly knocked out by the close of this weekend I hope. At least to the point of working on his jump pack I hope, so arms and shoulder pads finished up & Attached.

More updates to come. Take it easy for now guys.

Update! Finally!

Gotten the mini close to finished, sans one shoulder pad and the jump pack. I'll be starting work on the final shoulder pad shortly after I post this up and hope to have further progress on the mini between shifts over this weekend.

Here's the pose, and mostly finished mini:

Very happy with the pose so far. I'm really enjoying posing these minis to appear to be vaulting forward into melee. The squad as a whole is very dynamic and that's been a real treat to see come together so far. Once this minis is finished I'll have one more Death Company mini to paint up and then I'll move on to Lemartes to round out the squad.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now folks and thanks for looking.

Thank you Zambro, and EDC, I appreciate the kind words. Glad to see other folks like the posing. Hopefully the painting doesn't detract from the posing too much.

I got the shoulder pad finished up and attached last night, I'm down to painting and attaching the jump pack, and this mini will be wrapped up.

Here's the progress:

Hope to make some progress on the jump pack this weekend and get it wrapped up so I can start on the last mini of this bank of five. More to come soon. Thanks for looking and take it easy for now folks.

Thanks for that, War Kitten, and the continued encouragement.

I'll be doing some final touch up work and then getting the Jump Pack wrapped up in short order I do expect.

Once that's finished I'll be completing one more Death Company Marine for the initial squad of 5. Slow and steady, slow and steady.

More to come soon. Take it easy for now there War Kitten.

"Slow and Steady". That's what I tell myself when I look at the fact that I still have to paint the entirety of the BaC set, and 10 Assault Marines, and 10 Sternguard, and 5 Scouts for my Ultramairnes. And then 20 Guardsmen for my Imperial Guard. It's how I keep my sanity

Hey man, awesome blog. A word of advice, thin your red paint down a bit, and try to do 2 layers of edge highlighting, for example, first layer of grey, followed by a mix of grey and white closer to the edges and sharpest parts of the armor. Cheers.

Thanks for the tips Marksolo, and I will mention I do thin my paints, (Using a paint palette) and some of the blemishes are a result of baubles in the black spray primer I'm using for the basecoat, though sometimes it does get a little thick without me realizing it if I've been painting for a while. So always a good thing to remind myself to keep the water ready to thin the paint I'm currently using.

I'm going for a minimal highlighting on the black, and trying to achieve a matte finish on them with washes and such.

My reasoning for this is to create a very stark contrast between the non-death company marines in the force, and their black raging brethren.

The Tactical Marines, Scouts, Command Squad, Devestators and Assault marines I intend to paint will have a lot of gold decoration and bright white details.

By contrast, the Death Company will have a darker, more sinister look to them. Dull, dingy, but still possessing the bright white to tie them to the rest of the army. The goal is to try to show, visually, that they are no longer what they once were. Taken by madness and rage, their armor painted matte black before being given their wargear and loosed upon the battlefield for one last battle, to die selling their lives as dearly as they can before they completely descend into madness.

All that being said, I'm going to be trying to knock out the jump pack for this fourth death company marine tonight and get this mini finished up so I can start the fifth and final member of this first bank of 5 Death Company models I'm working on. More updates to come.

Thanks, and take it easy for now.

Finally, an update. It took ENTIRELY too long to find time to paint one damn jump pack, but I've done it, and have begun progress on the fifth (and final for now) Death Company marine.

Without further ado, here's the most recent completed miniature.

I'm going to try and power through this last DC marine as quickly as I can and get started on a special project mini afterward. Going to let it be a surprise.

Thanks for looking folks, and look for more updates to come in short order.

For me, Death Company kits are a nightmare to paint. Sooo much blood iconography to paint. Which is why they're in my "will finish, someday" pile. Great job so far though, Red.

The trick for me at least is to mix Death Company bits in with regular Assault Marine bits to get a full 10 man squads worth of models with plenty of BA iconography interspersed throughout the squad. I also will note I have a personal preference for having a model with a Jump Pack actually have the belts attaching it to the torso of the marine wearing it. This isn't in every case, of course, but I generally do prefer that aesthetic. I even converted my Sanguinary Novitiate for the command squad to have the jump pack belt torso with the narthecium vials and hoses on the waist of the model so that the Command Squad member would have everything modeled on correctly.

Thanks so much for the kudos, I'm about halfway finished with the fifth death company marine now. Going to keep plugging away at it and hopefully finish it up soon.

Take it easy for now.

Looking good Red Thirst. Totally agree that you need to mix the DC kit with the std assault marine kit otherwise the bling is just too much.

Thanks EDC, and you too War Kitten! I agree, you get a LOT more mileage out of the kits if you intersperse the torsos and such throughout other squads. Also spreads the bling a lot more evenly across the army as well.

That all being said I've made good progress moving forward. I'm about 1/3 finished with the fifth and final (for now) Death Co. marine WIP. I'm down to finishing up the arms, shoulder pads, and of course the jump pack.

Here's the progress:

I can't say enough good things about these bases by the way.

Very good quality and a breeze to paint up. They're also solid so they help make sure the mini isn't too top heavy.

Very impressed with them, and I just purchased a 60mm base done in the same style to put a Contemptor dread on as well. Fingers crossed it'll arrive soon.

More updates to come soon. Take it easy folks.

A special project you say? Hmm very interesting, I shall definitely be on the look out for that one.

Those DC and BA kits just have so much brilliant detail on them, you notice something new to look at every time.

Love the last finished one you did Red and this upcoming one looks superb but I have got a question for you - The grenades, will you be leaving them all just silver?

Made in us
Blood-Drenched Death Company Marine

Mississippi

I agree Adamski. The Blood Angels range has some of the most amazing detail on their plastic kits. They're awesome, and really make for a unique looking force on the tabletop.

Now, at present I am planning on leaving the grenades silver for the time being. I don't have a good olive drab green shade I would like to paint them. That's the only other color I would paint them, and my green shades are very limited at present sadly.

Mentioning that does make me think and I'll put that shade down on my list of paints to look for next time I go to my local hobby store to pick up paint. I was there last week and had to get more dawnstone grey for basing, as I've pretty much killed off my last pot painting bases.

That is a color I could get and should have for both my Guard detail work and also my marines in the future.

We'll see how quickly I can get it. The nice thing is if I choose to go in and paint these grenades that green shade down the road it won't take very long to hit all of them with that color and then go in with a Nuln Oil wash afterward to darken the recesses and give them some shading.

In other news, I've finished off the bolt pistol arm of this DC marine and started the chainsword arm now. I'll finish it in short order and start work on the shoulder pads and jump pack to finish it off soon.

Take it easy for now.

If I wasn't so deep into my Ultras and such a big fan of their lore then I would definitely think about swapping sides and joining the Sons of Sanguinius. Not that that has stopped me from picking up some Sanguinary Guard for kitbashing or maybe getting some BA Tacs and DC for more bitz for the pile lol.

I think you could quite easily leave the grenades silver on the DC marines, it actually looks good and works for me. It's a nice little way of breaking up all the black armour.
