Subbed, and thanks for the inspiration.
You have three?
I want just one kid.
Just one good one.
For my wife.
Someone to take all these toys in due time.
Red base rims?
On a green Bloodbowl field would look awesome.
Check pattern is top notch.
Your workstation, wow - I am envious.
Very nice.
Thanks Jeff, and welcome to the thread of silliness and over collecting .
Yes three kids in two attempts, we didn't realize twins ran in my wife's family until after we were pregnant with child two(and three). Then we realized there were 6 sets of twins on my wife's side all skipped a generation and it was our turn . There are no perfect kids, so do the best you can and pray a LOT.
Red trim looks bad , so I went with rhinos hide instead, black was too....black.
Have a couple tiny grass bursts that are modeled onto the feet of the orcs which will get painted, but otherwise they are done. I might grab some army painter grass tufts and add them here and there, but only if I can find the desolate brown dead looking tufts. Orcs are not gardeners, and don't like competing for the natural resources.
Close up of the bases
I'm calling these guys done.
Next month:Test of Honour.

Good job on the orks, Theo;. Like the bases you have them on; effective.

The orcs look great. Their pads and uniforms look like they've seen some hard play, as one would expect for Blood Bowl. The basing is subtle and effective as well.

I really enjoyed painting them...maybe too much, but I don't have many orcs left, I think I shipped them all off somewhere to a gaming group trying to get started up.

Thanks EDC, I appreciate it
Well that's it for orcs for a while anyways. Now onto something completely different. Asian warriors who may or may not be of the respectable variety . Anyone following my blog for a while knows that I have a bit of a craze for samurai and Chinese food. I have amassed a bunch of figs over the decades and it's time to start building towards the past. Also September is right around the corner so I need a new months painting challenge for myself, and what sounds better than Samurai September .
I picked up the starter set for Test of Honour by Warlordgames.com a week or so ago and then used my points from the FLGS to pick up one of their expansions called Masked Men. While I have yet to read the rulebook for the game, I think a small skirmish game may be fun for the kids. Anyway, I built up the Masked Men set today as well as based a figure from Okko I think to work as a samurai. So if I complete these 12 this month, I will treat myself to painting the shadow emissary from Wyrd. All together the figs will be rolled into a Kings of War army, but for now it's just fun stuff to try and paint.
Here's where the masked men stand at this point.
The masked men are the yari ashigaru from warlordgames, formerly made by wargames factory, they have metal heads with samurai/demon masks(Mempo?) that they have taken off of samurai they have killed. Now these guys are actually monks who are lead by Masahiro, a maskless monk in the center of the photo.
Close up of some scenery bits(objectives maybe or just color for the table) that I made out of left over bits and bases. The samurai in this photo is a special deal I grabbed at miniaturemarket for a couple bucks. I think he came from the game Okko, bug I can't remember and don't feel like digging through the old thread .
The figures bases slip nicely into these three spot bases as in Test of Honour you can hire followers that come in groups. Bases are removeable from larger bases, but it's a neat little bit. I need trays for Kings of War like this, only larger.

Ooh, a neat new project. I have a ton of samurai models already, so I have never felt the need to pick up the WG plastics, so it will be extra fun to watch this project develop.

I hope it turns out as cool as it is in my head. I like the bases also, makes me think of people who were making counts as obliterators for alpha legion who put 2-3 guys on one base. Oh the possibilities.

The models aren't bad, not nearly as good as perry or a dozen other makers, but price wise they are great.
Well here is the full Samurai September photo that I hope to accomplish. It includes the word miniatures Shadow Emissary which will be my special treat if I complete the rest.
Also super quick test figure.
I couldn't decide today which Clan from Legends of the Five Rings to use as my army base. So I flipped through some old cards and I think Lion Clan (my original clan) is what will be my mainstay army. Crab and Scorpion were also hard players, but the roar of the Lion Clan calls.
Alternate views.

The Blood Bowl Orcs look amazing, Theo. The checks and bases really take them to the next level. The Samurai project looks promising for next month as well.

Very fast.
It's only because the quality suffers, my skills aren't great, but I force the speed.
I finished number two of the squad today.
He's in Dutch with the boss, so he has to carry everyone's lunch box.
Not sure what it's suppose to be, so box lunch for everyone because killing samurai is hard work.
"Dinner time boys, come and get it!"
Started base colors on the rest of the gang.

Yorkright wrote: These are very cool Theo, loving the bright colors.
Yeah I wanted to do something different (yet still came up with yellow ), as most Asian themed armies I've seen are red or blue, and some of the boxed art is green.
Lion clan was chosen since it was the clan I swore fealty to in Ledgends of the five rings game initially ( then switched to scorpion when they became a playable clan). Crab was also a possibility, but decided the Emperor's army needed to be built. I'm going to try and toy around with greenstuff at some point on a figure to see if I cannot replicate the lion samurai manes that you see on some cards. Basically bushy head dresses.
Has anyone played Arena Rex? I know it was a Kickstarter that had BIG problems, but I saw pics of their lion and wonder how big it is scale wise. I'll do some searching, but if it's too big then I might get it for a temple of the lion clan statue.

The Lion clan is looking good. I played a Ronin in a long-running RPG campaign and Spider for the CCG. Always nice to see reminders of Rokugan. That Blood Bowl team is really something, too. I like the basing choice.
Really liking them, something different, good work on them so far, one of these days I will sort out a Kings of War army, have the books, just need to sort an army or two, oh and fin someone to play would help I guess.
Azazelx wrote:Nice work so far. The red (Oni?) masks pop nicely against the flatter ochre/yellow.
Thanks Azazelx, it is a good attention grabber and I can see these guys painting the masks that they take from dead samurai all red as a warning sign to other samurai.

We only ever got to play L5R RPG - couple of times because we all wanted to play and not GM.

Yeah my main opponent (brother in law) moved to Texas , and my work hours keep me from going to our copious game stores to get in a game. I enjoyed playing King of War though.
cormadepanda wrote:That is really neat. The difference is amazing compared to the usual stuff i see.
Lunch box man is the most important, even more so than the standard flag man.
It is a unique little item on the sprue and I haven't seen it used before, so I get to designate its use ...Lunchbox.

Thanks Jeff, like you said, they make fine line troops, characters will get more details.
A couple more quick paint ups. The set comes with 6 spears and 5 bodies , and since I made a few without the spears (cut them all down to the bo staff) the last three I stood up for a campsite. The other is a nice pic nic scene. The samurai had his retainer set up the lunchbox and his banner for a little break between taking heads.
I haven't decided on basing yet, so everything is staying primer white right now. Speaking of primers, I've had so many problems with primers that when I saw a video on Luke's affordable painting service about using primers. So I followed his advice on putting the spray can in warm water for a little while before using it. It worked fantastic with a can that has been clumping up on me.

Good advice on the primers.
Cold solvents don't work so well, chem 101.
Or was it 401?
Difficult to remember...
Still, I am surprised that with your volume of work, there is no airbrush?

Yeah, but our house is not an igloo, we keep it cool though so maybe too cool for it.
I'm learning the use for all these painting videos out there and Luke's are very helpful to me.
I do have an airbrush, but got too frustrated with it when I first got it. I should sit down and learn how to use it, I've watched a few videos, but I guess I should try to pull up some more.
Local FLGS has some of the Test of Honour sets on clearance (that's why the masked men were so cheap). So I might be grabbing some sets sooner rather than later.
Off to start grandmas move in full force now. She is moving into her permanent room at the assisted living place and getting her furniture from home.

THe first two ashigaru are looking good. I like the understated colors-- very appropriate for low-lever retainers. FWIW, I think the guy with the big box is supposed to be an ammo carrier for arquebusiers.

well that might be, but it's on the sprue for ashigaru with spears and swords, no muskets or arquebusiers, so it MUST be a lunchbox. Really tempted to make a red and yellow mon on the circles at the sides of the box with golden Tori gates that look suspiciously like McDonalds arches.
So I spent a little time between last night and this morning painting up the first Samurai.
