Ummm...somewhere...

While the heavy bolter and AC can wreck MC's days, the MM/HF speeder is just too versatile to give up, and it's cheaper then the rest, and will normally always make it's point back.

I used to run MM/HF speeders a lot, and while they can put out some damage, they need to be to way too close. Even mass bolter fire will usually cause a stun, followed up by an assault and easy wreck.

Typhoons on the other hand, being 48" range, can zip around and stay at extreme range while providing fire support, and move in for objective contesting late game.

I try not to send too many units in my marine lists on suicide missions. The typhoon fits that a little better for me as they often can fire off a few more shots and live a bit longer in my lists. The risk/reward of the HF/MM speeder does have its merits though

Typhoon's All the Way.

The put down a decent amount of hurt whether you are targeting hordes or light tanks, and tend to get ignored by the enemy until the endgame. Almost nobody is going to take shots at my landspeeders, when I've got 2 vindicators bearing down on their position.

Right behind you. No, really.

HF/MM, because it kills EVERYTHING.

It multi-meltas that nasty tank, pops it, then flames the dudes inside, killing many, then promptly dies. I LOVE it!

Especially in a Vulkan list. MM/HF will own (and get owned, but THIS. IS. SPARTA.).

Another question: has anyone tried HF/HF and/or MM/MM speeders on Vulkan lists? If so, how did they fare?

Violence is not the answer, but it's always a good guess.

I personally don't like the whole concept of Landspeeders. That said, the MM/HF is probably the more suitable one that fits that stats.

I've heard people say that before. I don't know whats not to like about them. Fast heavy weapons at the most efficient price per heavy weapon in the codex.

Sure they are fragile, but you can't have everything at that price. Just make sure they get a cover save when they need it.

Typhoons.

sure they are more expensive then any other option, BUT...

they WILL survive.

they lay down an impressive amount of fire for what they do cost.

and they can maintain their mobility while firing to full effect.

MM/HF speeders either make their points back or they miss and die immediatly and waste their points.

the Typhoon is garunteed to get a few rounds of fire off before it dies and even then it is less likely to die.

The typhoon is not guaranteed to get a few rounds off, opponents get 48"+ range weapons too...

But yes they are generally more survivable due to their range than the suicide hf/mm build. Lets not make hyperbolic statements about it though.

@ 100 points that build seems dubious. Needs to get inside 24" to do anything, and inside 12 to be most effective. Seems unlikely to survive or do more than the HF/MM variant.

I never have. It might be ok I just prefer to have the flexibility and dont want to have to slow down in order to fire to full effect. its potentially valid, depending on the local meta i guess.

I use a Typhoon Missile Launcher and Heavy Bolter mix with my Land Speeders. Your able to stay at range and shoot at priority targets while staying out of range for a good while. Then when they advance your able to move forward and light a target up with the Heavy Bolter shots and 2 Frag Missiles. I use a squadron of three of these. It has worked well for me in several games, yet YMMV.

I prefer the Typhoon simply because of the range issue. Should I feel the need for fast melta in a marine army, I would opt for attack bike squadrons as I feel they are more survivable closing with the enemy (can get cover easier)

I guess I'm the only person who likes taking speeders with only Multi Meltas? in lower point games 2 of these (try to keep in separate squads) are extremely reliable anti tank. It takes some work to take out fast speeders, who should be kept hull down the entire game

One thing to remember = Attack bikes are easily locked into CC and killed. Speeders on the other hand are a bitch to take down in CC (hitting on 6s mostly, and its a vehicle). I tried Attack bikes for a bit with a Vulkan list, but they were getting annhialated in CC all the time.

I really don't see how flamers work on any vehicles, because to fire them, you need to be in assault range of an enemy, and vehicles dies so easily in assault.

The heavy flamer on the MM/HF speeder is useful. Its use is situational, as with anything else. Mostly you're better off using the Multimelta if your opponent still has vehicles left, but once you've ejected him, the HF really comes into its own. Against horde lists, too, it's effective right from the start -- move 12" to somewhere in the direction the opponent's unit is not going to want to go, and unleash promethium-flavoured doom. Then he has 2 choices: send that unit *backwards* towards the speeder in CC, knowing he needs 6s to hit (so while he's likely to kill you if he has enough attacks, it's unlikely to be guaranteed); or move towards the rest of your army but get flamed again. Neither is much fun.

How do you figure? You autohit and wound on 3s vs MEQ, allowing you to kill nearly half the squad.

Then when they assault you, they hit on 6s and either pen on 5s with krak where they get 1 attack each, or glance on 6s with multiple attacks. Either way they don't have a great chance of destroying you. Sure if they have a pfist you go down a bit easier, but those squads are the ones you avoid using the HF against. You can find targets for you MM easily enough if all the squads have pfists.

i wouldn't be worried about CC when they could just shoot the speeder with their guns and keep advancing.

Typhoon for me, I just leave em in the back out of range of most things, they are great.

I'm still on the fence between attack bikes and mm/hf speeders. I'm trying them out now in test games.
