I didn't want to bump up the serious discussion on nukes; but it reminded me of this nice, simple game Greg Costikyan wrote and Steve Jackson Games published back in 1985.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Nope. It wouldn't. The radius where nukes will kill everyone without question is surprisingly small, so while the cities will be in ruins not everyone there will be dead, more importantly most people in the countryside would still be alive.
LIke, what do you think would happen if a 1 megaton nuclear bomb detonated in the center of the city of London? What do you think would happen? If your answer is that the city goes bye-bye, then you're wrong. A 1 megaton, surface level iniation would result in the destuction of.....oh 5% of the city's assets, and 20% of the population, meaning that most of the city is still standing, and even mor eimportantly, most of the city is still alive.
Beside, nuclear winter has been completely disproved. So that 'global cloud' thing the game mentions killiung us all? NOt going to happen, sorry.

What about loss of infrastructure and the collapse of society?
I think your view of nuclear warfare is very sterile.
I was talking one nuclear bomb, of course in a full on nuclear exchange we would cities take much more damage, but they wouldn't be irradiated craters. Fair chunks of it would still be standing, remember nukes don't exist to just kill the population. You don't aim an ICBM at Moscow...you aim an ICBM at the Moscow Rail Yard, or the Kremlin, specific targets that you want to destroy.
And it's not 'sterile' it's realistic. Infrastructure would be severely damaged, and society would be changed forever, but neither would 'collapse'. They would just be knocked back a couple hundred years. I suggest you read the links I posted for an explanation of why I hold this point of view.
And Paris? Nuked?
Done.

I've now read both of the links above. Some of it is interesting.
However, I think the global situation has moved on from the scenario posited in the second link (set in the 1980's), so that a total nuclear exchange is unlikely to take place now. I also think that, while not directly prepared for nuclear war, much of the western world now would fare better than suggested.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Of course not, because I looted first and therefor I kill them instead!

Regressing back two hundred years would involve a massive societal collapse. Sure, humanity could theoretically bounce back, but I doubt we would want anything to do with this brave new world.
Especially if Melissa survived.
I would rather get back to nuking France as an experiment in thermo-nuclear war and its after effects.

Call it being selfish. I wouldn't trust most men I ran into in a post-apocalyptic world. What with being female and therefor a target for regressed douchebags. Setting up a makeshift fortress with a water purifier, solar power generators and batteries, food stores and then pointing lots of guns at people who get near to make sure they behave is my idea of safety...

Have you ever been to Norfolk in the UK? Its already full of mutants and douchebags I can imagine you shouting 'Get Orf My Land!' in a broad accent though.
That's if you want to shout first or are you a shoot first kinda person? I

...How can I be a traitor to the crown? I'm not even British!! I don't even have British blood anywhere along my line, closest I get is about a quarter Irish.
But yeah, nevermind, I think I'd rather live out in the blasted wasteland that was once known as France instead of having Melissia constantly aiming a gun at me...THat really does seem kinda scary, as I have a feeling she'll have no problem putting her Commissar hat on and start killing us all.

America is part of the English Empire. We are just biding our time before returning the colonials to their proper place.
Hey hey! You got us back for that whole American Revolution thing with the spill thousands of gallons of oil into our water! It's our turn to get back at you!

I agree with ChrisWWII about 90%, he's ideallistcally thinking that any Nuke launched would be a surface detonation, the numbers get a whole lot worse when you have an Air Burst. His thought about any bombs being used now a days being a small strategic strike is 100% true because even Nuclear detonations are subject to the inverse square law as it applies to Kinetic energy; so we would more likley see multipule "smaller" bombs launched from a MIRV-ICBM.
I don't see us going back even a full 100 years which is where a lot of the ground work for our modern technology was discovered.
The biggest problem we would face I believe is that we (our bodies) are not used to drinking water that is untreated so we would all of a sudden have to fight off natural parasites found in ground water, things like disentary would kill many people and even if a real hospital survived or emergency crews from a freindly state arrived they wouldn't be able to handle all of the people who are too stupid to boil water you found in a puddle in the street before drinking it. Then I think the next biggest problem would be panic, hoarding and looting. People are selfish and unless there is a system in place to keep them in check they will grab more then they need from the limited stock piles of resources and make proper distribution impossible.
We won't even get into the problems that countries like America and Canada would have in dealing with the ignorant and obese people in our populations. One confrontation where a crowd of morbidly over wieght people have to be told that an expectant mother requires more of anything then them and the mention of discrimination would turn into a riot. I'm curious as to what that scenario looks like over seas if anyone cares to comment.
EDIT: Side note did anyone see this link to the public license of this VIOLENCE RPG on this site? It looks like it's worth a read.

What.
I have never seen such a thing, and I live in the South where we do not eat healthy as a matter of cultural pride.
