to start, I'm only proxying space marine models as tau, and this battle will help me find what I want to buy, and I was thinking...
12 fire warriors, 3 pulse carbines, shas'ui with makerlight, target lock, carbine, and 2 markerlight drones: 200
12 fire warriors, all pulse rifles, shas'ui with markerlight and 2 gun drones: 160
Ethereal: 50
6 honour guard, sha'ui with markerlight and target lock: 97
3 stealth suits, burst cannons: 90
broadside battlesuit, smart missile system, targetting array: 80
crisis battlesuit, burst cannon, missile pod, targetting array, markerlight drone: 85
Hammerhead gunship, Railgun, 2 burst cannons: 150
4 pathfinders, 2 rail rifles and target locks, devilfish: 138
A level 1000 points, I think...
The other player said I could use Rhino chasis for devilfish/ hammerhead, termies for battlesuits, and tact marines for fire warriors.
Railguns should take out vehicles fairly easily, 30 fire warriors, 3 stealth suits, and whatever else is available should take out infantry squads with ease, and I included a (what I consider) excessive amount of markerlights just in case I have to split fire and to make sure that there are no cover saves, along with the fact that I like hitting on a 2+
I just don't like the look and lack of armour/ armament in the kroot, so don't harrass me about them, and I was going to get everthing I like, so more than 1 broadside/ crisis battlesuits are out of price range.
fire warriors are why I picked out tau, as they look as if they can blow your head off at range with awesome rifles and nice looking armour.
I like gun lines, but I added stealth suits because A: can take out large weak infantry groups with 18 shots; and B: If they infiltrate, then they will be able to shoot the people that fire warriors can't. Should I equip people with emp or photon grenades? or have a greater variety of weapons? I think I have enough infantry for 1000 points, though...

To list your army by FOC: HQ - Ethereal with Honor Guard ELITES - Stealth Suit Team, Crisis Suit Team TROOPS - 2 Fire Warrior Teams FAST - Pathfinders HEAVY - Hammerhead, Broadside To start, your list is illegal. I made the same mistake starting with Tau when I first started playing. The Tau Commander unit is 1+. So you MUST include one in your army. Same with Fire Warriors, which you clearly do. On to the list itself. I dislike markerlights on fire warriors. It's not networked so it fires WITH the squad, not before. I also am confused by the pulse carbines. I guess if they get close, you can force pinning? But you said against DE (LD 8 minimum, and too fast to pin, probably), Necrons (LD 10), IG (not close to you, probably). Oooorrrr Tyranids (Fearless). The pinning confuses me and the gun, with your potential opponents, is inferior to the rifle. Drop them. I wouldn't take the Markerlight Drones, but I don't have an issue with them. You need to either drop your Ethereal or make his squad full strength to maximize BS 4. Since you don't have loads of markerlights, you can use BS 4, but I would prefer more Markerlights to Honor Guard. I wouldn't take the Ethereal, especially once you add your Commander in, at 1,000 points. I REALLY dislike Stealth suits, but that might be my group and their vehicle fetish. If it works in your group (which it looks like it may - chance to pen DE vehicles, Necrons have only the Monolith, Guard is easy to kill with them, likewise with small Nids and big Nids have a decent chance for a wound or two - then I can justify the choice with them. The lone Broadside is fine, but also consider a shield drone to help prevent ID from Lascannon fire (again, dunno how your Guard player flies). Since you have the Pathfinder special Devilfish (with re-roll Deep Strike within LOS), then take advantage of it. Give your Crisis suit a Targeting System, and two Fusion Blasters and DS in and take out those tanks. They earn back their points and are not the easiest thing to kill either. Alternatively, you have an anti-Infantry build going on, and that's fine too. Using the Jet Pack rules to keep you in cover against AP 3 stuff is handy. It may be better for your list, since it is fine in the anti-vehicle department (with a Broadside and a Hammerhead), but I really like DS suicide suits. Get a DISRUPTION POD on that Hammerhead. They let you get a 4+ cover from any shooting further than 12 inches away. Against gunline, or slow moving armies, this is the difference between life and death. It is a 5 point upgrade and the Hammerhead is key to this list, being one of 2 reliable anti-tank weapons. Keep it alive, and get the pod. You're on the right track here - I also like a heavy Fire Warrior list with other units supporting them and covering what they can't do. I think experience with the codex and your group will improve you big time.

Your list is pretty scattered, especially with all of those unnecessary upgrades and the single suits everywhere. The list needs to be more focused with a solid game plan, and I think a semi-mech/Battlesuit list would be the way to go.
For a starter list I would try something more like this:
Shas'o Commander (Multi-Tracker, Plasma Rifle, Missile Pods) - 112
3 Crisis Suits (Multi-Trackers, Burst Cannons, Missile Pods) - 150
12 Fire Warriors - 120
-Devilfish - 80
12 Fire Warriors (Photon Grenades) - 132
8 Pathfinders - 96
-Devilfish - 80
2x Broadsides (Target Locks) - 150
Sniper Drone Team (3x Sniper Drones) - 80
Total 1,000
The Pathfinders start outside their Devilfish and the Fire Warriors on foot jump in if they need to move. The whole list forms up as a gunline and then repositions if your opponent gets too close. I gave one unit Photon Grenades because there were an extra 12 points to spend and nothing to spend them on. The Broadsides and the Crisis Suits are pretty beastly as anti-tank and andti-infantry and the Pathfinders can use their markerlights to reduce the cover saves of anything they want to shoot at. The Sniper Drones are there because I could not think of anything else to fit except perhaps a third Broadside....

For many reasons, do not take carbines on FWs. The PulseRifle is superior in every way. And, mixing guns, with different ranges in the same unit is bad too.
MEQ Breaker wrote:Ethereal:6 honour guard, sha'ui with markerlight and target lock:
Generally, the E is a bad idea. You'll be hard pressed to find him in any list.
MEQ Breaker wrote:broadside battlesuit, smart missile system, targetting array:
All those Gun Drones you're fielding in the FW units? Change them to Shield Drones for your b-side. Team Leader and then Bond.
MEQ Breaker wrote:crisis battlesuit, burst cannon, missile pod, targetting array, markerlight drone:
It needs to be a Team Leader and given an MT so it can shoot both guns and have a DroneControler.
MEQ Breaker wrote:Hammerhead gunship, Railgun, 2 burst cannons: MT to Move&Shoot like a Fast Vehicle and DisPod for a Cover Save.
MEQ Breaker wrote:4 pathfinders, 2 rail rifles and target locks, devilfish:
If you want RailRifles in your army, use SniperDrones. PathFinders should be dedicated to MarkerLight support.
MEQ Breaker wrote: Should I equip people with emp or photon grenades?
Never photons. If your FWs get assaulted, then you want them to die in the first h2h round, so you can then shoot the enemy unit in *your* turn. IF your FWs survive that first h2h because of photon grenades, they will surely perish in the next h2h round, meaning the enemy unit gets turned loose on *his* turn, to assault something else of yours.
EMPs? No. Since tau are largely the best anti-Tank army in the game, with RGs, FBs & MPs, you really shouldn't have your FWs doing anti-T duty.
I strongly suggest scrolling through the Army List forum and viewing the other threads; I agree with a lot of the advice guys like FlingItNow, The Bringer and others regularly give on tau. Also, read AdvancedtauTactica.com.

I am really liking the advice I got, thanks guys. So, to recap, you say to generally drop some of the upgrades on the fire warriors and drop the ethereal unit, take shield drones on the broadside/hammerhead, lose the rail rifles, buy more battlesuits, and lose the stealth suits, right?
Thanks guys, if there's any more help before one of the games, let me know, k? Actually, I played the Dark Eldar and learned my lesson in a 750 pt game, (made a terrible mistake, took 4 fire warrior units, 2 bodyguard battlesuits, and a commander battlesuit, he had 6 men left( hero included) and charged 10 fire warriors at the end. Guess how long it took for the result... they survived 2 full turns!
