Subject: A few WoC questions...

Irked Necron Immortal

I'm planning on starting a WoC army. (I'd like to play Tzeentch themed army) I've read some tactics threads and I have the army book and a box of warriors already. A few questions I had were:
1. What is a good number of models in a unit for Chaos Warriors with the MoT?
2. Are Marauders with MoT effective? Do I run them naked or with shields?
3. Dragon Shaggoths ya or nay? What about normal Dragon Ogres?
4. One Chaos War Shrine or 2?
5. Hellcannon... seems like a standard in most lists, is this a 'must have' unit?
6. Unit of 8 Chaos Knights in 2,500 sound about right? Mark of Tzeentch seems pretty rock solid on these guys.
7. From the looks of it this is not a character heavy army, I was thinking Lord on Juggernaught (modeled tzeentch like) and a Sorcerer and calling it a day on that end. Is that a bad idea?
8. What is a good number of Marauder Horsemen?
Thank you I greatly appreciate the advice.

1) 18 warriors of any color tend to be enough. You could go larger but I would rather have 2 smaller blocks for flanks etc.
2) They can be, HW/Shield is the way to go.
3) Depends on the list. If you run the Shaggoth you really want another large threat unit (Giant or Knights) to take some of the fire that would be directed its way. Regular Dragon Ogres are overcost but a fun unit to play with if the rest of your list is solid.
4) 1 is good 2 can be better. You could spend those points elsewhere.
5) In most cases yes. It is the only long range shooting (outside of thrown weapons) that WoC have.
6) MoT on knights isn't the best choice. They can't parry so its only a 6+ ward base. I would go either MoN or MoK.
7) Depends. Juggers aren't as good this edition and he will die easily. A lvl 4 will be more useful imo but the Jugger model is amazing (how would you make it tzneech like?)
8) 5 or 6 with a musician.

I was going to smooth over the armor cracks and paint symbols and shapes all over it, mess with the head a little bit, ect...
What about running the Knight plain? Or is that under equipping them?

Yes and no. You don't want to give them lances their magical Str 5 weapons are what you want. You really want to give them a mark because it makes them even better than they already are.

Knights with Blasted Standard and MoT can soak a MESS of fire before taking any damage, so that seems like a good idea.
As to Tizz guys, I had a funny idea the other day of using Tizz Sorcs/Exalteds on Disks as sort of cruise missiles, the sorcs especially. Load them up with ward save items and a killy weapon, then shoot them over/at units you want dead. Then throw a bunch of dice to casts spells looking for a miscast you manipulate with the puppet into the Str 10 around him. Save on the ward, then giggle and cut into the rest of the unit. Pretty silly, but fun too. Plus if you just hope over their lines into war machines or even empty space they will really have to figure out how to deal with all that in their rear and be open to rear charges in either case. Not exactly a tourney caliber idea, but it would be funny to play

Since noone has mebtioned this, on the character side you need to take a BSB unless the game is small, 1000 pts or less.

1. What is a good number of models in a unit for Chaos Warriors with the MoT?
18 seems good, going 6 wide.
2. Are Marauders with MoT effective? Do I run them naked or with shields?
If you go tzeench and shield, you might as well pick up light armor. They are decent bunker units for sorcerers, and cheap enough to strip the enemies steadfast.
3. Dragon Shaggoths ya or nay? What about normal Dragon Ogres?
Shaggoth is significantly worse than a slaanesh giant. Dragon Ogres are good, but pricey. I'd rather have core warriors, and leave the fast flanking to knights and marauders.
4. One Chaos War Shrine or 2?
I'd say 1 per 2 big infantry blocks. The more attacks a unit throws out, the more it will benefit from a warshrine.
5. Hellcannon... seems like a standard in most lists, is this a 'must have' unit?
Not if you want a first striking giant and a pair of warshrines. So, it depends on the build.
6. Unit of 8 Chaos Knights in 2,500 sound about right? Mark of Tzeentch seems pretty rock solid on these guys.
Take the ward vs shooting banner if you bother with tzeench. 8 knights might be 1 or 2 too many. Also, these knights are best when combined with a large holding force, such as tough to kill tzeench marauders with light armor and shields.
I might be the only one, but I had luck running knights with lances. If you play them with marauders grabbing and holding (while stripping the enemies stead fast), the knights coming in a S6 instead of S5 did make a difference. Besides, the knights look cool with the lance. Yes, it is over-priced, but it does work.
Unmarked and cheap works too.
7. From the looks of it this is not a character heavy army, I was thinking Lord on Juggernaught (modeled tzeentch like) and a Sorcerer and calling it a day on that end. Is that a bad idea?
Chaos warriors are so beefy, I've found I didn't need a lot of characters. Rank and File did just fine fighting on their own. If you are running marauders, or other infantry blocks, you will want a BSB
8. What is a good number of Marauder Horsemen?
6, w/ fails and marks of khorne. They will tear up warmachines like nobody's business. Though I've heard that ~6 with light armor and shields, and tzeench in a flank are pretty good, because they chase broken units fast, and make the fleeing unit easier to catch.

I'd have to agree with most of what has been said thus far. The thing I would do differently is have the MoT warriors as a unit of 20 run 5x4. I feel that 6x3 is an offensive formation for MoK + Halberds and 5x4 works better as a defensive formation. It minimizes incoming attacks and gives you an extra rank. I would say the hellcannon is something to seriously consider. It shoots, it's a monster, it makes julienne fries! Seriously though, take a look at its entry. Forcing a panic test at -1ld on what you hit and potentially causing every wizard to take a miscast are the top two reasons to take it. It does a lot for it's point cost.
