Again, simple question.

The rules are rather ambiguous. If I'm charging, I assume a challenge forces me to loose a lances +2 str.

Is this correct?

I want to run a royal Pegasus with a paladin, who carries the gauntlet of the duel and the virtue of confidence
(über challenge monster)
If he has a lance, he gets no bonus in the first turn?

No, if you charge and challenge on the turn you charge, you retain all bonuses to charging.

So then a lance is a good idea?

Well, it will make you S6, and with the other items that means you hurt most characters on a 2+/3+. Depends on what you want the peg lord to do really.

The lance is also kinda free

Well, it's nearly free then, considering the cost of basic magic weapons and the base cost of the heroes.

Yeah. I might recommend a Sword of Might, or the Sword of Anti-Heroes, or perhaps the Morning star of Fracasse or whatever (take that, Grimgor, Franz, and all you other guys).

The challenge is, at least in this case, I think, supposed to be issued as the unit approaches or something, so you can get that lance momentum in.

I did something similar with a Paladin, who charged a unit of Glade Guard with a Spellsinger:
"I challenge you, fey-witch!"

"No way, man. You're on a horse. With a lance. I'm wearing a bathrobe and have a cheese knife."

"But...I have this gauntlet thing!"

"Oh. Okay, then."

And then the knights connected, and a half-second later the wizard was skewered on a lance. Now that's honorable.

Nice, but you don't choose who you challenge. That's where the unit champion should have stepped up and taken one for the team.

Wouldn't the magic weapon essentially negate the lance? P501, "a character that has a magic close combat weapon cannot use any other close combat weapon".

What's worse, should we have a magical and a mundane lance, we still use the mundane one :/

Uhhm, no, the rule says something about that too.
And why in the world would you buy a mundane one when you already have a magical one?

To fill in points so your lords aren't worth 26%? :3

Huh? You do realise that your Lord only needs to be 25% max of the *point limit for the game*, and NOT the actual points you've spent on your army, right?

That and i really don't see how 4 pts would make that much of a difference.

I can understand buying the mundane one instead of a magical sort if you're short on points.

Butbut, I still don't understand why you would buy a normal lance when you already bought a magical one!

I think that he might have been assuming the %age your lord can be relates to the total number of points you have spent, i.e. the game limit might be 1000points, but you only spent 900 so your lord could only be 225 points.

This isnt correct, but can see how people may think that....

Right.

As for the whole "lance on the turn they charge" thing, I had no idea; I haven't played Brettonians in 8th yet. Lykum, allow me to clarify: I was saying (1) you can use a lance in a challenge, and (2) I recommend something besides a lance. If the knight isn't allowed to use his lance and then switch to a magic weapon, I think S5 each round is better than S6 for the first and S4 for the rest.

Finally, Oscarius, there's no weird trick or anything; it would be a complete waste to double up on lances...unless maybe you're afraid your opponent will break your magic lance, and you really, really want to have a lance...?

Though if all we're looking for is magic for it's own sake, I'd just give my lord the Grail Vow.

(And there wasn't a Glade Guard champion in that unit, just for the record).

If I were 4 points below max and had no where else to put the points, I might buy a mundane in case of destruction.

And yes, I would use a lance and a magic weapon! Str 6 first and str 5 second is even better and not that much more expensive!

Well, yes, if anyone builds an army and is X points short, and there's only one or two things that cost X, I'd hope they'd get one.

And I'll agree with that point on lances and some other weapon. I misspoke earlier, and have corrected my seemingly counter-intuitive statement.

Can't. Heroes always use their shiny, sparkle sparkle toy. Others don't go swish!

Basic bret rules, they can do it.

EDIT: Check the very top of page 60 in the bretonnian book, right under "Blessed Hierlooms of Bretonnia".

And, has already been pointed out in this thread: BRETS CAN.

If you dont have the armybook yourself, then I would suggest you dont contradict posters who do....it makes you look silly. Especially when you do it twice.
