Including that walking lunatic asylum Glenn Beck.

I like how Beck doesn't have enough real-world gak to whine about, he has now taken up bitching and moaning about hypothetical democratic presidential terms that never happened.

You have a point. Manbearpig is a sneaky git.

Glen Beck's column was funny. It was partisan hackery, but it was funny. Jack Ryan as a senator. Good stuff.

I like how his approach was to claim Gore would have made all the same screw ups as Bush did, to show the hypocrisy of the left. Which isn't a bad approach, and has some merit. But even Beck couldn't pretend that Gore would have invaded Iraq.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Meh, I dunno, I really wonder if Gore would have invaded. I'm torn, I guess I'd vote "no" because there was a lot of resistance to it that he could have played upon to avoid doing it, but people forget just how POPULAR it was at the time. Certainly Bush made it that way, but one guy can only do so much. I think a lot of people would have demanded it to the point that not doing it might have been too risky for Gore to tolerate.

I think he's also a fairly chippy sort of guy, on the more hawkish side of the Democrat mentality. I've heard a lot of anecdotes of him telling Clinton he had to bomb this, or kill that, and only sometimes being heeded.

United States

I don't recall any public desire to invade Iraq prior to the Bush Administration floating alleged Iraqi noncompliance as an issue.

As such, I think the real question is whether or not Gore would have placed the matter before the public.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.

The Bush administration was discussing a build up to invade Iraq prior to 9/11. They were generally decided on the need to invade, the only debate was how it might be presented to the general public - eventually deciding on WMDs as the primary reason.

There was strong support for the war, but this was support built up by the administration to justify the war they wanted. That the Democrats rolled over in support speaks very poorly of them, but it doesn't mean Gore or any other Democrat would have planned a similar operation. Or really, anyone outside of the Bush administration, who really need to be remembered for their very peculiar views of foreign policy.

Thinking about, it's weird that so many of those authors gave Gore two terms. I mean, I think it's pretty reasonable to assume 9/11 would have still happened, and I really don't think Gore would have gotten a second term after that. Bush had the benefit of being new to the job, and having the general Republican reputation of being strong on foreign policy. Gore's presidency would have been the continuation of the Clinton presidency, and I doubt he could have recoved a perception of letting foreign policy drift like that.

In fact, I'd be surprised if Democrats would have recovered enough to be real chance by 2008.

Gore would have lectured the country about energy usage while increasing the electric bill of the White house four-fold.

That bit of witty political observation now means I'm qualified to work at The National Review.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.
