I am looking to make a themed army, and rather disliking the model for the Slann(both from looks, and how much of a pain it is to try and get it to stand on its flight stand) I have decided to have a Carnosaur step in. as such I was looking for ways to make the Slann a more choppy and melee decent character, then I found that a few of his states stacked, as well as adding the Giant's Blade made him very decent.

at 465pts he would have:

Plaque of Topek: +1 spell
Higher State of Consciousness: non-magical attacks don't effect him
Unfathomable Presence: MR(3)
Giants Blade: +3 Str
BSB
Banner of Swiftness:+1 Movement
Glittering Scales: -1 to hit in CC

I plan on taking Lore of Light, so he will get(unless I match up against Dwarfs) he should be able to get the Speed of Light off(and even if it miscasts this could work in my favor). meaning that he is now M5,Ws10, Str6,Int10 and -1 to hit in cc, all normal attacks do nothing to him, and against magical attacks he has a +1(+2 for the real roll) Ward Save. in this manner I am basically guaranteeing I will get the Speed of Light(he knows 5 out of 6 spells), which is the spell he needs to have, plus a good deal of selection for other good support spells. he is a good tarpit unit as he can tie down an entire hoard on his own without risk of injury to himself, of course he won't be able to do more than kill a single foe, he is safe from pegged out while there and he can still cast the advanced Speed of Light to get the rest of the army up to WS/Int10, and then cast Time Warp on itself, if it ever gets irresistible, I just have to hope for a 5-9, as the the hits are non-magical, and if I am lucky enough, the template will claim a few of the bodies around him.

so what do you guys think, for a 2k game is this competitive, or am I just asking to get him stomped?

at 2.5k I think I would give him either The Focused Rumination(for the extra dice) or The Becalming Cogitation.

I really just want hear some feed back from others to see what they think, and to see if this is at all plausible, I don't expect him to go toe to toe with Named Heros in CC, but I can see him stalling blocks of units with nonmagical attacks.

thanks for the read Dakka and can't wait to see what I get for responses on this.

Insanity.

I think you're pushing water uphill trying to make him kill anything.

The concept of using him to slow/stall blocks down is solid, though. I've seen the ethereal slann with +1 Ld banner do just that. Crown of command if you're feeling saucy. You'll accomplish almost everything you were trying, but you don't have to spend wads of points to upgrade your single strength 3 attack to a single strength 6 attack.

I agree with Red for the most part, and would like to add that Unfathomable Presence isn't the best ability you could be getting for him.

Warhammer 40k Ultramarines 5000pts Green Tide 2500pts Foot sloggin' Romanoth 1st-5th 3000pts Eldar 1250 pts

Warhammer Fantasy Woc (emphasis warriors) 3500

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

i'd give him the Bloodbath sword for +3 attacks. would be better then a single Str6 one.

may I ask why that is, Magic Resistance 3 seems very nice when paired to his +4 Ward Save, and immunity to nonmagical attacks...?so against magic he gets a nice +2 save, whats not to like?

Second on the insanity comment

Though a stubborn slan with the BSB rule and ethereal would be really hard to budge.

I think it's be pretty interesting to give a Slann the Revered Blade of Tzunki and have him poke at monsters/characters from the 2nd rank of Temple Guard and re-move them.

Do you mean the Blade of Realities? That's actually kinda funny.

I don't think MR works against magic weapons, just wounds from spells, right?

if the toad is in his temple guard, he only gets one attack maximum unless he wants to drag his pudgy ass up to the front row and see if his 4+ ward decided to show up today.

That said, I think a combat slann (in temple guard or out) is maybe a fun gimmick idea, but not a serious competitive choice.

No big deal since he only has one to begin with, but then again thats what makes the whole idea suck, that and WS 2.

Take a look at the slaan entry. I'm pretty sure it says he can't buy magic weapons.

Stubborn BSB Slaan, ethereal, with MR, AND the lore of life so he can regain wounds, is a road block. Buy the MR as the 45 point talisman though, save 5 points, and you can take another slaan ability instead.

A stubborn BSB slaan in 30 Saurus is a sight to behold. (And I had to face off against at the last tourney I played in)

I saw one in a southlands list.
Stubborn slaan in a block of 48 skinks with 6 kroxigor.
That block was huge, 10 wide, and a little over 7 deep.

With the slaan on the outside edge, and all those 20mm bases, it limited who could touch on the charge.
Worked well, and fit the no saurus theme.
