Deadly Dire Avenger

California

Hello, all. This will be my first battle report featuring two games I played last night which are apart of an ongoing campaign for the month. Army lists were set at 750 points, next Monday will be at 1000, and then at 1250. A "mega battle" will be held at the end of the month to determine the overall winner. Here is the Saim-Hann warhost I played:

HQ: 130
Autarch w/ Jetbike, Mandiblasters, Power Blade, Fusion Gun

Troops: 224
x6 Jetbikes w/ x2 Shuriken Cannons (152)
x6 Dire Avengers (72)

Heavy Support: 275
Fire Prism w/ Spirit Stones (125)
Falcon Tank w/ Scatter Lasers, Spirit Stones, Shuriken Cannon (150)

Fast Attack: 120
Vyper w/ Scatter Lasers (60)
Vyper w/ Scatter Lasers (60)

We don't play the standard missions in the rule book for this campaign. Instead, we play special missions designed by the guy who hosts the campaign, which add some variety to the game. Also, we don't have to follow the force organization chart and are allowed to have one troop and HQ minimum if we want. So, without further ado...on with the show!

Game 1: Necron

My first game of the evening had me against the foul Necron, who brought with them Warriors, Scarabs, Immortals, and a Lord who can deep strike them around the table. Here is a shot of what I was up against:

The mission we played was called "Cleanse." The objective of the game was to have your troop choices occupy more table quarters than the other player by the end of turn six. I could tell before we started that this would be a tricky game for the Necron because he only had the one warrior squad on foot while I had jetbikes and DAs in the Falcon Tank.

Eldar turn 1:

This mission forced me to take the first turn, but it also denied him the ability to seize the initiative. He deployed his army behind a building and turbo boosted his Scarabs around his flanks as their scout move, giving them a 2+ cover save. Not much else happened this turn. My grav tanks and jetbikes scooted along the edges of the table and shot at his army. I only killed one Scarab with the cannons on the bikes and knocked one warrior down with a scatter laser shot, but he returned during his turn.

Necron turn 1:

Here is where things got interesting. His Lord teleported himself and the Immortals closer to my lines, landing in front of my Fire Prism, and the scarabs scooted closer to my jetbikes. The Immortals shot at the Fire Prism and, thanks to their guns automatically glancing on a 6, they succeeded in shaking the Prism, which made me a sad Autarch . His Scarabs tried to charge my bikes, but thanks to the jetbike slide I made in my assault phase, they were out of range. Meanwhile, on the other side of the battlefield...

His Warriors and second unit of Scarabs moved to inercept my Falcon and other Vyper.

Eldar turn 2:

Fire Prism moved away from the Immortals since it couldn't drop that tasty str 9 ap 2 template on their heads. The rest of my army continued to scoot and shoot at the Necron with only minor success. My Jetbikes instant killed two more scarabs with shuriken cannons and put a wound on the other one, then did the jetbike slide back behind cover. Scatter lasers from Vypers killed only one Warrior, but he stood right back up during his next turn. My Falcon tank moved behind the warriors and vaporized one with the pulse laser.

Necron turn 2:

The Scarabs, the Lord, and the Immortals marched closer to my Autarch and the jetbikes. Immortals opened fire, killing two. My Autarch screamed, "Hold the line, Wild Riders!" They rolled a seven and stayed in the fight. Hoping to lock my jetbikes in close combat, the remaining Scarabs charged the jetbikes in the assault phase.

However, my Autarch easily sliced those buggers into little Necron kibbles with his power blade then rolled a 6 for his massacre roll, moving my jetbikes out of harms way.

Eldar turn 3:

Army continued to scoot and shoot. Meanwhile, free to shoot again, my Fire Prism moved to a sweet spot with clear line of site to his clustered warriors. The Prism charged its laser, and fired, killing four warriors! This was a vital shot because the Warriors had to take a morale check and rolled an 11 . I didn't expect this to happen, but his warriors ran 12 inches, stopping right in front of my Falcon tank!

As a result, the warriors ran off the table at the start of his next turn, leaving him without any troops to complete the mission objective. He didn't lose enough units to phase out, nor did he want to concede, so we played on.

Necron turn 3:

Hungry for vengence, the Lord teleported his Immortals in front of the Falcon, hoping to glance it to death. They only shook it, though, and it sped away in my turn four. In the shooting phase of my turn four, the Fire prism got a direct hit on the unit, and, well...

The game lasted for only one more turn, but the Necron player failed to do any significant damage and decided to call it a day. Victory for Saim-Hann!

Game 2: Space Marines

My next opponents were Space Marines from the "Storm Lords" chapter (the wolf rider is a proxy model for his captain riding a bike).

The mission for this game was called "Lamp Post." In the center of the table was one objective, literally a lamp post that emitted a 12" radius of light. Everywhere else on the table was night fight for the whole game, but if you stood within that 12" enemy units could see you no problem. The objective was to have more troops within 6" of the lamp post by the end of turn 6.

Space Marine turn 1:

Deployment was spearhead here and the SM got first turn. I deployed my army behind a building in my quarter of the table. Since night fight was present everywhere aside from the center, it may have not been necessary, but better safe than sorry. Pretty uneventful turn. Marines moved, tried to shoot, but it was too dark to see.

Eldar turn 1:

Turbo boosted the bikes and moved the tanks and the vypers. Tried to shoot, but it was too dark. 'Nuff said. Pretty much the same thing happened with the marines in their turn 2. Moved and tried to shoot, but failing because it was too dark. Exciting game, huh?

Eldar turn 2:

I decided to have my vypers move flat out towards his bikes and the speeder to distract them...

...while the rest of the Wild Riders harassed the lumbering Mon-Keigh, killing two with massed fire.

Space Marine turn 3:

The Marines took the bait and fired their melta guns and bolters at the vypers. The Saim-Hann pilots, however, gracefully dodged every shot!
Frustrated that they failed to gun down the Xeno scum, the captain and his bikes assaulted the lead vyper, but once again the piloting skills of the Saim-Hann proved too much for the marines
as all their swings failed to hit!

Not everything turned out in the Eldar's favor, though. The terminators stomped towards my Falcon tank and let loose two crack missiles, blowing off the pulse laser and immobilizing it. In their assault
phase they charged the immobile tank and exploded it with power fists and chain fists, killing two of the DAs inside and pinning them!

Eldar turn 3:

I positioned my vypers to harass his bikes some more while the Autarch detached from the guardians, moving closer to the terminators in case I had to charge them to save the DAs.
Fortunately, combined shooting from the Autarch and jetbikes killed off the terminators. Fire Prism shot and missed, and the vypers focused their scatter lasers on the speeder,
blowing it up.

Space Marine turn 4 (5?):
I'm afraid I forgot which turn this was exactly, but either way the last few turns were the most exciting because
the captain attacked my Autarch in an epic HQ duel.

The Autarch struck first, inflicting a wound on the captain. Fed up with these filthy Xenos, the captain ferociously retaliated and caused three wounds!
The Autarch failed two invuln saves but saved one. He lost combat, but passed his leadersihp test, determined to fight to the death.

Another angle of the epic HQ duel. Check out that sexy paint job!

Eldar turn 5(6?):
This was by far one of the most epic games of my Autarch's career. While the rest of the army positioned to finish off the space marine bikes, the Dire
Avengers moved up and charged into the fray to save their leader, but the Autarch smote the foolish Mon-Keigh before his comrades could strike.

The Autarch's glory was short lived, though, as the remaining marines gunned him down with bolter fire. It was a mistake, though,
because the bikes couldn't clear off the DAs or the jetbikes sitting on the objective. In my next turn my army moved up and shot at the bikes until only one was left.
The Marine player conceded because the rules for this mission did not allow him to contest the objective and I had 2 troops on it to his 1. Another victory for Saim-Hann!

Overall these were really fun games against some nice folk and I was pleasantly surprised at how well my army performed.
I plan to write another report next week when we increase the points to 1000. Thanks for reading!
