I've been rather slowly painting my Striking Scorpion exarch as I wanted to make it my best painted mini yet.
In doing so I've been comparing it to the ones painted by the Eavy Metal team and I realised that some areas of my model looked a bit less well defined than the picture.

So I took my knife to the bits that don't look right, like under the chin. To my surprise it wasn't the metal that the mini is made of but some sort of crunchy residue.

Have you fellow Dakkites experienced the same thing and is there an easy way to clean this crud off without using a knife, as i've not only ruined my paint job to date, but I managed to mangle a mandiblaster and chop off a bit of the chest rune.

Regards

HF

I've never encountered this before myself but you could try rubbing these problem areas with some very fine steel wool, hope it helps.

Did you get this model pre-owned? It could always be rogue superglue.

Nope, got it brand spanking new from GW, i've found a few of the models are like this.

For example some areas will be really rough and slightly disfigured. Perhaps I picked up a box that had been rattled.

Next time, i'll take extra care before commencing painting and if I come across anything I'll take a piccy.

So let me get this straight you started to eat your metal models? Wow I thought I never see the day when someone enjoyed GW's Models that much.

It sounds like they're mis-casts and have some of the mould release fused into the metal. Take them back and you'll be able to get replacements.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Yeah, GW will usually send you some new minis if there's a problem.

I've probably left it too late as they are all painted.

Just been cleaning up my Farseer and warlocks - no crunchy bits on them.

Ah well, I thought someone might have come across this before.

From the amount of paint I ingest keeping the tips on my brushes sharp, I sometimes feel like I've eaten a mini....

Never experienced crunchy residue on my mini's...then again I dont eat corn chips around them either My advice would be to contact GW customer service, it doesnt hure to reach out to them and typically they will replace whatever you have if you answer a few Q's for them!

I've always had luck getting help with GW replacing miscasts/stuff missing. Give them a call.

I would guess that some stray slag from the molten casting material found its way into the mold during production (slag is the scum like stuff that forms on top of molten metals, it is usually very porous when it cools).

It's just slag and crud from impurities in the metal alloy when it is melted. The crud flats to the top normally (or to the gates/vents).

Just means someone wasn't paying attention when they did a casting run.
