Three Color Minimum

Hi there, just painting up 3 Fire Prisms of the old make and I got an idea for a way to paint the cannon. Not sure if I'm crazy about the result so I figured I'd let you guys decide. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for looking.

I quite like it, although it does make the green bits around it look very flat, so I'd suggest some highlights if you aren't going to already.

Yea I might make some highlights so it looks like it's glowing.

I was going to say exactly the same thing. The entire model could use some highlights. But the prism thing, looks like the lines and slashes nearest the tip should be whiter and the slashes and lines nearest the base should be more green or orange etc...

The rest of the model isn't actually finished. I like the idea of a lighting effect though. More colour progression is always good and I can definitely start darker and end lighter.

Thanks for comments so far.

Hmm, im not particularly thrilled with it either. I think if you would have began by blending another color beneath it (replace the black with something), getting lighter as you worked towards the tip of the crystal you might have had a better result

4250 points of Blood Angels goodness, sweet and silky W12-L6-D4
1000 points of Teil-Shan (my own scheme) Eldar Craftworld in progress
800 points of unassembled Urban themed Imperial Guard
650 points of my do-it-yourself Tempest Guard
675 points of Commoraghs finest!

Element206: Do you mean start with a base colour and then highlight up using these kinds of lines? I think that could work. Otherwise I think wet blending and might be a better option.

Also, this is for an army I'm trying to finish painting for the 18th so taking a huge amount of time so improve this idea is not an option.

Thanks again for feedback, I think I'm going to go with a more classical approach and take your guys idea into accound on the lighting effect and starting with 50/50 Orange yellow for depth.

Nae. It's well done but I personally don't like it.

I like, especially if it's easy. Those crystals are always a pain to paint.

I think it could use more blue lol.

I vote for the red one, but I think it would look better with out the black edge on the front of the prism (like the other other two versions).

Huh? It's a Tank. What nose?

Anyway, I vote yellow. It stands out the most and I think it looks generally gosh darn awsome. I do like the 'experimental' crystal that you're doing, though I don't think the frame around it looks good. Maybe try a different colour for that.

Bah, you guys are supposed to agree on one!! lol.

I think I'll just keep them like this for now. I need to paint other stuff for next Saturday.

Thanks for all the comments everyone.

I think that the black/red crystal blends in too much with the rest of the vehicle. I enjoy having a bit of contrast for the focal point (and with these I would have to say the turret/crystal is clearly the focus).

The other two, I can't decide 100% on. The crazy one on the left (in the final picture) is really well done, but I think the gradual shift in colors should have been a tad more dramatic to really draw it out. The middle one, with the flame colored gradient is awesome on the color front though. It stands out from the rest of the tank and also contains enough contrast within itself to make the details clear. I'm torn between them.

On all three though, superb painting.
