Hey can you place a mounted character in an infantry reg?

I only ask because I remember seeing it in a old white dwarf and I dont know if its been changed as im new to warhammer fantasy?

If the base size is a multiple of the infantry size (so a 25x50 mount in a 25x25 base, or 40mm in a 20mm base unit) then it can go in the ranks and counts as the models it displaces. So your Lord on Juggernaught on a 50x50 base counts as 4 warriors for purpose of ranks.

If they can't fit in the unit due to odd base sizes (50mm in 20mm unit) then they have to be put on the side of the unit, and I don't think they count for ranks then, but I am not 100% on that part.

HOWEVER while you *can* put them in the unit you will not get a Look out sir! roll for them, as they are a different unit *type*

Meaning the first cannon will probably go straight through them...

Good point. I neglected to mention that.

That's what charmed shields are for.

To be fair, Shivan, that applies equally to Look Out Sir rolls...

You may not even need to do that with the Wight King. He's durable as is with heavy armor and shield, and his natural T6 T5 and W3. Keep a champion (Seneschal?) close to challenge away characters and you should be good.

The main concern with placing him on the steed would be from flaming cannonballs in particular, and a few other things like Gehenna's Golden hounds.

My main reason for putting him on a ateed was because im converting him from a bretonnian reliquae because im doing a vc army based on the Red Duke.
But I see where your comeing from I may have to trade fluff for survivability.

Wight King is T5, not that it matters against cannons.
Flaming Cannon balls means dwarves; which means not unit with the flaming banner.
Golden hounds means somebody choose metal, before seeing your vampire list. Metal is a very poor choice against VC (skeletons only 5+, ghouls immune).

What I would do is stick him in the infantry unit; but field a unit of cav that you can shift him into; just in case.

The number of things that can snipe heroes is pretty limited, so just make a last minute call where to go.

Woops, typo, my fault. Point remains, I think he's durable enough, especially with invocations around to get away with not mounting him.

As empire, I'd still put non flaming cannons through him to try to drop him. With the Drakenhoff, he's worth enough points to make it worth it anyways.

I'm assuming all comers vs. all comers which increases the likelihood of encountering metal magic (particularly on Dark Elf support casters). I'm just saying I don't see a need to have him mounted, barring any information about the rest of the army.

Outside of dark elves, I don't see metal showing up too much, and dark elves I usually only see a level 2 (though to be fair, I run a level 4 with metal, and a level 4 with death)
I agree with you that he's survivable enough to not be mounted; but I don't think being mounted is such a disaster either.
If you wanted a mounted BSB Wight King, it's doable.

The nice thing about running an army that doesn't break, and is all immune to psych; you can afford to lose the BSB; it's not nearly as big of a deal.

Very true.

If you want to field him on foot but have already done some work converting the dead grail knight, I'd consider a little saw-work.

I saw an army that was themed as undead Brettonians but used the Tomb King (and later, Vampire Count) army book. Each horse was on two separate bases; the hind legs were a separate piece from the front and the rider. It was pretty cool, and he apparently didn't get too many complaints about WYSIWYG (mainly because he was fielding three units of 15+ "knights", which would be difficult, to say the least).
