So I use to play 3rd edition 40k and was really into it. Had a 3000pt IG army. Unfortunately, college and a lot of other things got in the way and 40k had to go. But now that i'm out and I have lots of free time( unemployed ) I decided to pick up the black reach box set and get back into it. Any major changes to how the game plays since 3rd? The box started set gives you a lot which I like, I remember the 3rd edition started set which had very little in it. Anyway what units should I purchase to get my Ork and space marine forces larger. I need to know what are the solid army builds for 5th? And how should I restructure my IG? All comments are welcome. Thanks

Welcome to dak dakยก For your orks more boyz is great for them and always put PK nobs in each squad. For SM more troops and rhinos is good for them. 5th ed. is focused on objective based games that only troops can claim. More troops kitted out properly is the key to 5th. For more info. and proper army list builds check out what lunchmoney suggested.

5th edition is so different (and better!) - play some games before you commit to more of anything.

Welcome to Dakka Dakka! IMHO, in the way of marines, another tactical squad. You actually need another to play a legal army. Then whatever extra editions you like. For orks, more boys and maybes some MegaNobz.

Thanks for the replies everybody. Hopefully some of you veteran painters can help with my next round of newb questions? I've finished painting my terminators and tactical squad. I painted them in the current ultramarine colors(gold, darkish blue, red eyes). They are all highlighted nicely but I not sure if I should highlight the edges of their armor with skull white? Any ideas? Next question is for my Ork boyz. What is a good base color and highlight color for their skin and how do you paint checkered patterns on their armor?

Welcome to Dakka!!!

I believe you could ask these questions in the Painting section and get a much more useful response.

Hello, welcome to Dakka Dakka.

I was until recently in a similar situation as you. I am a returning player from 3rd edition, but unlike you I did not sell my army.

Yes, there has been several changes to the game since 3rd edition, most good and some not so good. However, the game is much more definitive, it seems...less vague. Since you were an IG player, I would have advised you to go that route but it appears to be too late for that.

This is, of course, strictly my opinion. It is very much dependent upon your play style and personal situation. Mileage may vary, etc.

That aside, you went about it the correct way with the AOBR boxed set- you get a lot of basics wit it that you will need. I would assemble them, but I would not paint them. Pay both armies in some informal skirmishes to get the rules and game play back down. Use both the SM and Orks. Talk with players of both armies. Once you get some experience under your belt, if you decide you don't like them you can trade them off for some units of the army you decide to keep. If you like both, then of course keep it all.

If you decide to keep both focus on one army first since it seems finances maybe thin. Get a Codex first and foremost, then if you can get a Battleforce. That will serve to fill a lot of slots cheaply. If you don't mind used, watch the forums here or at BT for some deals as well. But if you go new, then it is a matter of filling some heavy support choices as you next priority. Then look at your elites and Fast Attack and Elites from there.

Oh, then buy the Codex, 5 or 10 of the new tanks, the Valk and you are set.

Oh, and some 60 mm bases for your heavy weapons teams.

Welcome.

I'm in a similar situation to you and plan on restarting IG.

Valkaries and Vendettas seem to be pretty popular.
And veterans instead of platoons.

So I have been reading through a lot of stuff about IG and I think I got a good idea for a possible list.

Let know what you guys think about my possible ideas for my list. I wanna do a gunline mech force, maybe use the gunline to hold the center while I would advance on either side of the board.

HQ
CCS-gonna stuff this with special weapons, maybe a fist in their too. kind of want this unit in the gunline

2nd HQ choice? any ideas?

Elites
Sly Marbo
Psyker squad maybe? chimera as transport?
don't like the other elite choices

Troops
PCS-fist, special weapons, possibly a counter attack unit.
5 Squads- flamer or grenade launcher, maybe some power weapons?

2nd PCS, same as above
5 Squads- 3squads autocannon, 2 squads lascannon, special weapons?

2 Vet squads-plasma, melta, possible autocannon, chimera

2 penal squads

Fast Attack
1 Vendetta

Bane Wolf

10 Rough Riders

HS
1 Executioner- bolter, plasma cannon

1 LRBT squadron, just two vanilla russes, with bolters

Either a Demolisher- with multi meltas and a lascannon or a Medusa

I concur. See if you can borrow/playtest other people's armies.
