Subject: Removing models from assault

Let's say there is a 10-man squad with 1 sergeant and 2 special weapons. I then assault that unit and cause 11-wounds, of which 4 are power weapon wounds. He chooses to put 3 normal wounds on the sergeant and special weapons and the other 8 wounds, including the power weapons, on the regular squad members.
Now I believe that he should lose 4 models from that batch and then take another 4 saves. His take is that, as there are 7 models and 8 wounds, he can wrap 1 of the power weapon wounds on top of another power weapon wound so that only 3 models are removed and then take the 4 saves.
So my question is, which is the right way to do it?

I don't believe so due to the fact a PW causes ID to that particular model, and all saves from like models must be done at the same time
well it's not right off the bat, 11 wounds 10 guys 3 on the sgt.
They have to be done evenly through the squad. At most 1 model may take 2

So just to be clear, he put 1 regular wound on the sergeant, 2 regular wounds on the 2 special weapons, and 4 regular + 4 power weapon wounds on the the other 7 regular members of the squad.

In that situation, he will lose 4 models to the power weapons, plus one more for each failed save. He can stack multiple power weapon wounds onto a single model during wound allocation, but when it comes time to remove casualties they're taken from the group of identical models.
So if he stacked 2 power weapon wounds onto the sergeant, he could escape having to remove two models, as the sergeant's wounds don't carry over to anyone else. But the identically armed troopers will lose a model per unsaved wound assigned to that group of models, regardless of how they are stacked individually.

WHat your opponent is missing is that, after you assign wounding hits evenly, you then *group* all wounds and identical models together, and take the saves, if any, as a agroup.
So at this point you cannot "stack" 2 PW wounds on the normal bolter guys, as they are identical

Yeah, both Insaniak and Jdj have it right. Roll the saves for your Sergeant and the two special weapons guys, then remove the 4 PW wounded figures then roll the remaining savable rolls for the figures that were kitted out the same.
At least thats how our group has always played it.

That's correct. He could have caused "wasted" PW wounds if he allocated them to the special weapon guys or the sgt groups.
