Would you play against a fandex?

If an opponent asked you for a game using a codex he/she had writen his/her self would you play against it?

Naturally, I would like to have a look at it, and make sure it isn't too OP.

Only if it was a friends and they wanted to test and get feedback.

There is a difference between a play tested existing fandex and something, a friend came up with spontaneously.
For me personally, the first one is okay, the second one not sp much (or only if it is a slight variation of an existing one).

I give it a go to see if it's fair. If not, I'd say no next time.

How about when you agree to play it in order to have a friend make a few tweeks to make it playable and not a broken pile of crap...only to get beaten by him so badly that he says "yea, it's perfect, I won't change it, and I won't ask anyone online because everybody online is an idiot." Yea...only played against that codex once: land raiders that can carry 20 troops and all penetrating shots are reduced to glancing shots, an A14 Dreadnaught that has the same ability and can self repair...as I often say, I'd love to say I was kidding...

unless it's so full of Opness that it should be called Codex: You lose i will play it.


i have faced 2 fandexs before. the Necron fandex and Codex: Kroot. yeah, i know the kroot one was in chapter approved, but i think it still counts. both were nice and balanced. Necrons became much more expensive, but much more durable.

the kroot dex is fun. ankor prak(IIRC) is an awsome, but balanced character and the codex reflects the fluff of kroot very well.

In fact I have played against them, 2 in fact. The fandex from Kompletly Kroot and the 13th company Fandex

Yeah, all those are extensively playtested, established and published for years. The original post specifies the question to an untested one a friend just wrote.

I certainly wouldn't mind helping a friend play test one. However, I'd probably want to be able to look at the thing in advance.

It'd be hypocritical of me not too, since I'm going to need help play testing my DA fan 'dex.

I am always down to try something new, though I will always ask to take a quick read to get an idea of what is going on.

The best way to help a friend test their rules is to let you run the army against them.

I'd be happy to playtest, or see what aspects could be broken/uncounterable.

Nope Ive no interest in wasting a game playing against what is sure to be a poorly written and OP fandex it ranks up there with fan fiction and molesting children.

Someone who I have hard proof that they've been working at this: hell yes.

I like making up armys but the really promblem is that you don't know there exact points, which then you might Under or Overpoint them.

I've just started reading a friends CSM fandex and so far, it's tons better than the 3rd, 4th and 5th ed ones.

For me, 40k is about imagination and fun, and there is no better way than to support fellow gamers.

And if a codex is unbalanced, well, playing it will balance it, wouldn't it?

I'm less worried about winning or losing at this point, feeling I've proven myself sufficiently in that area. Now it's more about being challenged, having fun, and playing more unorthodox armies and opponents. I'd just ask them to outline the changes of their fandex for me and if I felt they were OK I'd agree to it. Whether or not I'd play them a second time depends entirely on how balanced I felt it was in play.

I would be happy to playtest. And I actually would like to try some of the fandex out there (Admech, Genestealer Cult, Harlequins,...).
Some of them are terrible though, so I want to read it before.

I would mainly to help playtest it.
