hello, im building a BA army and i was wondering who i should field for my HQ choice. i am leaning between Dante and Mephiston. what do you think Dakka?

It's going to be hard to give you a good answer when the choices are presented in a vacuum. Mephiston and Dante are very different units who do very different things.

What does the rest of your army look like?

just started building the army, right now i have a scout squad, 2 tactical marine squads,i plan on getting a terminator squad, 2 devisator squads and a rhino in the near future

Get some assault squads, you'll need them. But if you want to play shooty Mephiston is probably your marine

shooty is definaty my play style, i might throw in a few assault squads for flavor, but my main thing is gonna be takin out a healthy chunk before the CC begins

For a shooty army? Tycho. Adding him to a Sternguard or Tactical squad is a straight up buff, and making all of those wonderful shooty units LD10 is a great way to keep your gunline army from going anywhere.

Of course, a Librarian in terminator with a storm shield is also a great friend for you

I think, purely from feedback of the SCs, that you should get tycho for gunline, meph for support, dante for assault, astorath/lemartes for DC, sanguinor for anti-SC/IC. (assassin)

I don't believe Lemartes is an HQ choice. He is a troop choice. However a Reclusiarch would count as an HQ and be just as functional as Lemartes.

i guess it just depends on what the rest of your army list looks like. Mephiston is a monster, but he has a real high points cost and has no range. Despite popular belief, he can be killed if he doesnt have cover from a tank or something else. How many points do you have? I like Dante, he is a good all around choice for an army. I also agree with the idea of a Reclusiarch, it a good choice. If your not looking for a significant benefit from your HQ choice, you can just take a commander with/without an honor guard. I think you have many options, but should focus your army in one direction and this will better help you make a decision.

My friends and I often play with no special characters allowed, I like taking a Reclusiarch or a termie captain with th/ss.

alot of competitive builds run a pair of librarians. they're cheap, they're decent fighters, they have good psychic powers to choose from. they're very efficient. blood angels have access to some real face beaters for hq slots but as a general rule they're overpriced, even somewhat superfluous in an army where even your basic joe marine is a nigh-unstoppable rampaging psychopath.

If your going shooty I would support normal tycho or a libby. Liby in termy army with a SS and 5 LC/Th termy buddies is a amazing counter assault unit.
Outside of that dante can provide a accurate DS option if attached to a 10 man assault or other JP unit.

Meph is nasty, but wasted in a gunline imo, he needs to advance behind a armor coloum until he is in face beat range.
