Question - if you upgrade a dreadnought arm that has a built-in weapon (storm bolter, for example), do you keep the built in weapon?

I used to think no - if you upgraded a DCCW/SB to the TL Autocannon, you lose the storm bolter.

But I also recently purchased a Ironclad Dreadnought, and it has the option to upgrade it's seismic hammer to chainfist. This would leave me to believe that you don't get the meltagun with it - but the model (and even the official games workshop pictures on their website) have the melta gun.

And I did check - the wording is similar in all cases for the dreadnoughts - the only weapon upgrade/switch that accounts for the built in weapon is the Ironclads right side DCCW/SB combo.

For reference, the link to the Ironclad: http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod20021a

So how does that work?

Check the wording for the options in the Codex. One says replace the CCW and stormbolter the other says replace the siesmic hammer. So there you have it.

I double checked my books and I can't really tell, but does the chainfist that comes in the box have a weapon on it? That should solve the problem.

The chainfist/hammer arms are one and the same - just a different "hand".

As Leo says, the wording is quite different.

Why did you all jump on the ironclad? That wasnt the question.

Compare the ironclad entry to the normal dread:

IC: Replace dccw and storm bolter with xxx or yyy

Normal: Replace dccw with TLAL/ ML.

Not mentioning the SB.

The fact still remains that the SB is built in, and that replacing the dccw means you lose the SB also.

Now look at the hammer with melta which the op did ask about.

Replace hammer with chainfist. So the melta is retained.
