So my friend recently gave me a stack of about ten white dwarf magazines from the late 90's to early 2000's and one in particular caught my eye. White dwarf 251's "chapter approved" section contained rules for designing vehicles. Unfortunately, the rules were made using codex's from 2nd&3rd edition, and so are fairly out of date.

What I'm wondering is what changes need to be made to bring it into the year 010-011:M2. many of the weapons themselves have not changed too much, but I noticed some of the point values had. it also contains war machine rules which also seem out of date. The main thing on my mind is how the new vehicle damage rules would change the points cost for armor values and how new blast weapon rules would change weapon costs.

I don't have any links to where you can view the rules online, but I'm hoping some people will have a spare copy of the issue lying around.

If necessary, I can post parts of the text to help.

i-Eldar: there's an aspect for that.

There's no clean and easy formula to update an article like this. The original point costs in it were mostly done by "feel", and were subject to breaking by a player looking to powergame.

The article is from 3rd edition, when assaulty vehicles were better than they are now, and shooty vehicles were mostly worse. Blast weapons were worse. Barrage weapons were more poweful.

It's always going to be subject to your opponent's consent, so I'd sit down with your regular opponents over a beer and hash out some general guidelines. You could try them out basically as-is, or adding 10% to the point cost, or something simple like that. Try out the vehicles and see how nasty they seem.

Back then it used to be easy because they didn't have a million new special rules to account for also, along with more heavy weapons and other things to consider.

Inside your mind, corrupting the pathways

There is a pretty good vehicle design calculator here. Last updated 2009.

Missing a few of the newer weapons, but I find that it calculates vehicle points fairly well (usually slightly over the cost of the vehicle when re-designing official vehicles).
