This one is pretty basic, but I just need quick confirmation.

If my BSB takes a magic standard, does he confer the bonuses of that standard to any unit he joins (providing he can actually join them)? Secondly, if that unit already has a magic standard, do the unit and BSB benefit from both effects?

I say yes on both counts, but I would like a BRB reference to back it up.

A character who joins a unit counts as a member of that unit.
If a unit had a magic banner that gave Frenzy, the BSB, and any other attached characters would gain Frenzy.

If the BSB had a banner that gave flaming attacks, the whole unit would give flaming attacks.

So yes, if you had two magic banners, they would both work on the unit.

Most magic banner that give benefits will say that they apply to the unit. (movement, re-roll charges, ward saves... ect). I actually can't think of any banner that doesn't apply to the whole unit. The Dwarfs have a runic banner that gives the BSB (but not the unit) a 5+ ward; I think that's the only example of this sort of thing.

As above - any character joining a unit is a member of that unit from then on (until they leave...)

So any "unit" effects affect the entire unit.

I am tracking your logic, and I agree with you, but some sort of reference would be helpful specifically relating to banners.

By that same token what if it is an item rather than a banner? For example Crown of Command grants Stubborn, but the SR for Stubborn applies it to the whole unit. On the other hand, The Berzerker's Sword grants Frenzy. However the SR for Frenzy make the distinction between models with Frenzy, and units in which at least one model has Frenzy. So if we use items instead of banners it changes the outcome a bit.

It is because the banners specifically grant the ability to the UNIT and not to the model. Other items grant it to the model only, which only gives it to the unit when the SR specifically states so (ie stubborn).
