I've noticed lately that Dakka goes through trends in terms of what armies are discussed. Most of the time this coincides with the release of a codex which is expected. But occasionally a specific army will become the hot topic of the forums, currently it is the Necrons with Tau being the most disccused before them. Anyone have any ideas as to why Dakka goes through these fazes?

Maybe because people enjoy discussing new armies when they come out?

Necrons and Tau have not had a new codex come out recently.

Think of Tau and Necrons as being armies that need revisiting when new stuff comes out for other stuff. Sometimes a unit comes out that makes a previously obvious gambit seem less wise. What aggravates the situation is that some people seem to think any perceived weakness in their army reflects on them, so you have these running battles of partisan posters doing the internet version of football chants.

Then there's the wonderful long running feuds between posters, butt-barnacles (those posters that seem to follow you around the forum being disagreeable), the work cycles of those who post from offices, and the mixture of gamers from different continents and mindsets rubbing up on each other like the only difference between people was accent, origin, and how much they love Jesus.

Because frankly you're going to get trends when you're participating in a game of Space-Nazis vs Republican-Jesus.

Anticipation from the players of the codex?

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

In the Wasteland

Lately, there are more and more Necromunda players on Dakka. You can see that from all the P&M blogs started for Necromunda. People just see others make cool things, or play a cool game with an army, of In case of Necromunda, Gangs.

These trends come and go as more people start with it. But after a while it gets boring and they move on.

Fixture of Dakka

On a boat, Trying not to die.

I've noticed that for a wargaming site centered around da Orks, not much in the way of my army of choice.

I'm not sure Dakka was ment to just be centered around Orks? Sure the name and Emoticons are Orky but I don't know if that means the sight is supposed to be centered around it.

Yeah, I know, but it seems that Orks are left out... Alot...

Meh, Orks had their day. Hell, there's still tonnes of ork threads in the modelling forums.

Personally, I'm trying to encourage the trend of non-GW miniatures. Support smaller businesses!

Tau always have their spot almost once every month with the "I hate Tau" thread, so I say it's more of a "phase" on Dakka rather than a "trend". However the next one will take longer to come since the thread of this month actually was successful in getting more attention than it should have. I mean, 15 pages for a thread with a beaten-to-death topic, what the feth!?

Mentioning Necrons, I have only noticed no more than one thread so I'm not to sure it's "the thing" that has Dakka in a quandry/discussion about. However if there are more threads then please do provide with links.

The trends are pretty obvious

New codex hate fest
The slagging of old and out of date codexes
Wishlisting on new codexes or models
X army power lists

Is it any different on other sites? I really doubt it.
Just par for the course internet stuff!
